Need Listbuilding Tips

Hello gentlefolk of B&C, registered an account because I have a dilemma that I heard you might be able to help me with. The long and the short of it is that I'm trying to build a list of between 750 and 1.5k points worth of Marines using the Space Wolves codex. The thing is, I don't want to use any tanks, with the only vehicles being Dreads and MAYBE Drop Pods/Land Speeders. I also want to focus heavily on Thunderwolves and Fenrisian Wolves - I'm going to be modeling the force as a Khorne/Nurgle type of deal, with Bloodcrushers for Thunderwolves and Vampire Counts Dire Wolves as Fenrisian Wolves. Not sure on the paint scheme, backstory (Possibly a failed attempt at using Space Wolf Geneseed to found a new chapter, or just renegade Space Wolves), or name yet (Hellhounds?), so any tips in those arenas would be great too.

Generally, as a thumb of rule, 1 grey hunter pack per 500 points is pretty solid advice. Though in this case it may not be so ideal as you will probably need two fairly essencal units in good numbers. Assuming you keep them fairly basic with 2 melta guns, they will be around 155 points each, though Mark of Wolven or/and Banner may well help make them better. Though Grey Hunter packs can typically handle most none specialists in melee pretty well anyway and are one of the best troop choices in this game. You will want to take at least 2 full squads, if not more since they are a really capable closer range unit.

Long Fangs with missles is one of the most cost effective ways of long ranged firepower that can shake up tanks and cut up infantry. You will typically want at least 2 squads of those, though 3 would be ideal. Chaos typically runs as many oblivrators as possible anyway. The cost of three comes down to 420.

Thunder Wolves can be ran in any number, just ideally you would want them bulky enough to absorb a good quanity of fire, but be small enough to make the best use of the Thunder Hammer. Basic 3 Thunder Wolf Squads with a Thunder hammer costs 180, from there you can add a storm sheild to one to make it 210 or two for 240, then double it to make two very effective hammers on a really fast moving unit that probably will have a lot of firepower directed towards it.

Lastly Wolf Guard is the best way to introudce power fists into your army due to their natural 2 attacks and ability to also carry a combi weapon. With 5, you could take a cyclone Termi to add two more potencial missles to your long fang squads. These guys can get really expensive in squads though, so at 1500, I would be really careful how you spend your points on them. After all, you only have 1400 points free max as you probably will want to take a Rune Priest.

Since your going footslogging, and you want to be using alot of fenrisian wolves you say, I think your probly going to want to start off with Canis Wolfborn- he improves all your FWs via Saga of the Wolfkin, and furthermore makes them troops units *though not scoring*

The FWs and TWC will actually help alot in keeping your GHs and other, slower, units alive. Additional things: A unit of Landspeeders for some heavy weapon support, the aforementioned dreads for further long ranged dakka, Terminator pack leaders to take hits on, and a Rune Priest for psychic defense and stormcaller in larger games.

Something like:

Canis Wolfborn -180pts.

10 Wolf Scouts- Meltagun

15 FWs- 120pts.

10 GHs- 2x PG, PF, Totem- 200pts.

Landspeeder Typhoon- 90pts.

750pts.

Might make a good starting point.

As for the backstory... you could have them be a failed chapter from the cursed foundings if you wanted- it wouldnt be known they had SW geneseed mixed in, but it could be present anyways. Other options:

- The Rune Priest for this great company, 2000 years ago, convinced the wolf lord that when his bitter rival had taken the position of Great Wolf the entire chapter was in danger, his opponent being subtly influenced by the power of chaos. In a fit of rage he recanted his oaths and confronted the newly elected Great Wolf, who banished him from the fang. Deep in bitterness, he was slowly twisted by the words of his most trusted advisor, and as he slowly fell his great company mostly followed him. Most fell to the love of battle, as the oath of the Lone Wolf was twisted into devotion to death and bloodshed as entire packs took it to show their devotion to the leader whod had the strength to stand alone. Now they wander the lonely corridors of the warp, preying upon imperial ships to gain the equipment they so desperately need to maintain their arms and armor, occaissionally striking out at smaller imperial worlds in confusion and rage.

- They could be used to represent Death Gaurd, Mortarions legion, using FWs for daemon packs.... I like the idea, but its pretty self explanatory.

If you're looking at this from a pure FLUFF perspective, you can't have an offshoot chapter of the Space Wolves. The Wolf Brothers were the ONLY Second Founding Chapter using the Space Wolf Geneseed, and they were exterminated (too many were falling to the Curse of the Wulfen). After this, no other chapter was ever allowed to use their geneseed. You can come up with any crazy conspiracy theory you want, but I'm pretty sure it's not realistic to have some sort of "stealth" Space wolf chapter that the inquisition doesn't know about (but apparently is fighting wars all over the galaxy!).

Your best bet is choosing to play as the 13th Company (NO vehicles) or I think there is one Wolf Lord who rides a Thunderwolf... so you could play as that company.

Maybe they were some Wolf Brothers that escaped the exterminatus.

Eh, realistic??? Who cares, it's warhammer! And it is a big BIG galaxy.

I agree with GM. Canis Wolfborn is the man you want. 2-3 packs of greyhunters, and lots of fen wolves. What size of an army were you trying to make?

Honestly? As large an army as I can afford - Probably moving up in 250 point increments, starting at 500-750. I intend to mix kits of Space Wolves and CSM squads to get the feel I'm after, and as far as the backstory goes, I've settled on a 21st founding chapter created from Deathwatch Black Shields (Marines that have lost their chapters).

Typically I would start off with the raw essencals. 2 Full packs of Grey Hunters with duel melta guns at 310, a HQ, probably Rune Priest to make it 410 then the rest of your points on a desired unit. Then at 250 I would either start adding Long Fangs or Thunder Wolf. Then add Caius in at 1000 at least to replace the Rune Priest just so you can have enough of a solid backing before you bite into the meat.

Anti tank. Frankly the TLLC is going to be your best bet, it has the longest range, good field of fire, and a nice accurate S9 weapon to kill enemy transports and artillery with it.

Remember, it can still be attached to a 10 strong GH pack with WGPL!
