New DIY chapter

I post here asking for help.

I have decided I want to make a bike army. Having said that, I need to use some of my space wolf items to help flesh out the small list.

After doing some reading, I think i have a suitable name and concept, but I would love some feedback and perhaps advice on fleshing out the army. My only stipulation is that I have to reuse some units so I'll have to repaint them so that I can easily swap them between armies.

The chapter name will be Wotan's Wolves

The army in general will be referred to as "The Wild Hunt"

The concept and name comes from the mythology surrounding Odin's wild hunt. Horses are basically replaced by bikes.

I am still on the fence as to use Khan as a count as, or a generic bike captain as my principle HQ.

My color scheme will be grey, with shadow grey highlights (very similar I think to a preheresy Space Wolf color scheme). Hopefully no one would then flip out when my speeders go back and forth between armies as the iconography and color scheme should be appropriate for both armies, yet not just my Space Wolf army running as a count as.

As far as the main bike portion of the army, the wolf icons are absolutely appropriate and then I think I can add in some raven and antler/stag iconography as well.

I also intend to use this army as part of a crusade force for apocalypse games. This force would consist of Space Wolves, Wotan's Wolves and House Bellasarius' Fenrisian Guard (an IG force under command of the Bellasarius navigator house). If anyone has a good idea on how the High Lords of Terra could be convinced to decree a founding of a new space marine chapter, it would be appreciated. (I was thinking bribery).

Hopefully I didn't ramble too much and it's not too cheesy of an idea. I'd appreciate any assistance and or advice possible. Thanks in advance.

Well, since we deal in backstories and stuff in this section of the forum, this is the part I think I can offer some help with. :D

Personally, I'd just put them into one of the existing foundings. It's very hard to come up with another reason for a space marine chapter to exist, and you get the choice of roughly how old you want your chapter to be.

EDIT: Biker wolves, eh? Sounds pretty cool as a concept.

I typed that but somehow deleted it, so I'll just edit that back in.

Are they going to be descended from Space Wolf Gene Seed? Because that doesn’t happen, the High Lords and the Inquisition will not allow a new chapter to be made from then after the tragedy of the Wolf Brothers, and that they don’t wont another chapter running around with the same disregard for authority that the Space Wolves have.

Another thing would be make sure you don’t make them just Space Wolves on bikes, if you wont to do that do a detachment from a Great Company or some such. If not then try to make them as unique as you can, to be inspired by the Space Wolves not copy hem, maybe moving towards Saxon and Germanic myths rather than Norse? With my own wolf chapter the Doom Wolves I’ve gone into Celtic mythology to move them away from the Space Wolves.

I think the idea is really good and you could come out with some great stuff :)

They definitely won't be Space Wolf gene seed. I was thinking White Scars or one of their successors.

The chapter would be based on folk lore concerning the Wild Hunt. This folk lore was prevalent across northern, western, and central Europe. In one aspect of this lore, Odin in the guise of the wind lord mounted on his steed Sleipnir would lead spirits of the dead across the sky. Sightings of the wild hunt was supposed to presage some great catastrophe or war. I find this very fitting imagery for a bike army.

The sounds of boots marching and the howling of wolves was supposed to herald the coming of the wild hunt. Some aspects of the mythology states that these supernatural hunters are adorned with wolves, ravens, and stag iconography (or accompanied by said animals). So the small amount of items that would get shared between my two armies shouldn't be an issue I would think.

I can adorn my bikers with raven icons and stag antlers.

They chapter would utilize scouts, landspeeders, landspeeder storms, and bike troops.

I need a way to tie them to house Bellisarius, perhaps a debt, or something. This is why I had asked if perhaps the navigator house would have any influence the high lords of terra. I was thinking they could help get the chapter started In order to have another fighting force that they could call upon in times of need to assist in their battles.

Their home world would be a space station named The Samhain. They would recruit from the planets they defended and battled upon.

This is basically where i'm starting from.

I really like your ideas brother, White Scars would be a good choice, you could probably use any gene seed to be fair, but as I say White Scars is a sound choice.

I can images them going into battle playing the howling of wolves and cawing of ravens from their vehicles as they attack would be a really cool images. Also all that iconography gives loads of modelling opportunities which is always great.

Maybe have House Bellisarius save a chapter vessel from being adrifit in the warp? Having a dept of saving all those battle brothers could be the start of a connection between them?

Why?

It sounds ridiculously short and blunt but seriously, why?

This is all good stuff. However, just how closely are you going to stick to the Space Wolves you seem to be drawing (for the 40k-isms) from? A little bit more distance, perhaps. Draw more from the other sources from central europe rather than going straight for nordic influences, or you might end up a bit too wolfy for your own good.

Otherwise I like it. Though you might want to have a different spin on the 'hunt' as the White Scars do that as well. It may not be a problem though if you make them a WS successor.

They won't share anything fluff wise with the space wolves at all, other than they also have a connection to house bellisarius and that in a few campaigns (apocalypse games) they fight alongside the Space Wolf chapter. And a wee bit of wolf iconography.

The reason I even bring the space wolves into it, is simply that most of the bikes I have will be transplanted from my space wolf army. Quite a few have had green stuff modifications and icons added that I like and don't want to remove. Plus I (although rarely) like to field bikes for a fun list. I can't bring myself to field oh... say red bikes and speeders with a space wolf army and call them space wolves, so I wanted something that can easily swap back and forth. Hence the codex grey color scheme.

I want them to be White Scar successors simply because they are my favorite codex chapter, and they work with the wild hunt theme soooooooo very easy. It's a concept that I love and wanted to base a space marine chapter around.

Oh and the reason I wanted them to be tied to House Bellisarius because I wanted a cohesive theme for my Imperial Armies in my basement as I'm building it as an Apocalypse force, and I'm also thinking about having this army do some recruitment from the Bellisarius guard.

Sadly that won't work, unless the Bellisarius Guard commonly recruit young children.

I thought it better to shoot this down before you put more work into an un-workable idea.

I don't have a problem with you wanting a link between the Guard and your marines. But the thing is, doing so in such a way that adds to the chapter when writing an IA article can be a pain in the neck.

Or if you want a really plain reason they work together often, the Bellisarius Guard could recruit from worlds in the systems around your chapter's homeworld, meaning they're frequently on hand for your chapter's operations.

It's not a flashy honour debt or anything, but it'll probably work just as well.
