bulley
Right this is just a case of memory fail, but I have a vague recolection of side sponson position effecting LOS - but I cant remember/find if that is the offical rule or just something we used to play at my old club. Reason being I have my LR beside me and cant decide to put the sponsons on the back door which looks better, but if there is a LOS issue - it will effect it, or on the front doors - which looks worse, but, if there is a LOS rule - will give "clearer" shots. Reason being there is cases where a model at certain angles is viewable only by 1 gun, obviously logic dictates that a tank would maneuver slightly to get a clear shot, but cant seem to find it that is what would occur. So - does sponson position effect LOS - or is it "1 see's all see's" ?
BlackSpike
Sponson,s like all weapons, use True Line Of Sight. If you can see it from the gun, you can fire the gun at it. If you can't see it (e.g. the LR hull is in the way), you can't fire at it. Personally, I put the sponsons on the front doors, as jumping out into las-cannon fire sounds a bit daft! (And you get slightly better range/LOS!) If you prefer to put them on the back (as they are shown in a lot of GW photos), go for it. EDIT: As to the tank manoeuvring slightly, that is what the pivoting at the end of your move is for! As you finalise you position, check what your guns can see. (Some foes are fine with you saying "I'm lining up to fire both sponsons at Unit X". Often acceptable with a LR, as it cannot reveal its weaker side/rear armour! With predators/Leman Russ etc, you might have to be more careful/check what foe thinks)
bulley
Yeah so its how I remember it. Since I left and returned they've "dumbed" (or rather made some slightly more user friendly) down a few rules, and decided in my head this could be one of them. Sponsons for me are going front door - I just dont want to kick myself over slighly stylised positioning vs practicality. This is what 10 years of not playing does to you! Just had to double check before the glue went on, cheers.
BlackSpike
Yes, 5th Ed. has simplified a few things. You may want to wait for a Veteran to post here with their opinions before glueing. I am a mere newbie. I'd hate for you to glue them, and then everyone jump up and say "Noooo! Spike is Wrong!" I don't think the positioning makes too much difference. Yes a little, and sometimes you'll scream "Dang! If only I'd put them on the front, i'd get you with both sponsons, and win! Now I lose! " ... but not very often! :P
Deschenus Maximus
Putting them in the front just makes more sense in any case.
Midnightmare
If I was disembarking from a LR to charge I would not be wanting to do so jumping in front of a Godhammer blasting away :P Front for me unless rules say otherwise :)
Leonaides
If i was disembarking from a lr... I'd use the front hatch with the assault ramp! I put my guns on the rear door and have never encountered a situation where i wished i'd put them on the front. But the choice is yours, and either way is fine. bulley
Cheers fella's. I am sure 99 times out 100 shots I would not have noticed, but there will be that one time I'll be gutted! Never thought about that side door thing about disembarking lol, could just imagine the driver "my bad guys, thought you were clear, Robby? You alright son?" SamaNagol
As you can disembark a full 16 man squad out the front hatch of a LR there is no reason to ever not put the sponsons on the front mounts other than personal preference. Yes, TLOS is in effect from all vehicle weapons.
