Honour Guard - How many in a company

As I get closer and closer to completing my 2nd Company my mind turns to who would be given an Honour Guard squad. Looking at the codex you can see that pretty much any officer is entitled to one but are Honour Guard organic to the Battle Company?

I was thinking that really only the Captain of the company would have one as other officers such as Reclusiarch and Librarians are attached to a Battle Company rather than being organic to the unit and probably wouldn’t bring their own Honour Guard.

So what are your thoughts on this matter?

The current Honour Guard appear to be simply a vanilla command squad by another name - and command squads are a codex approved "ad-hoc and temporary" formation formed and disbanded at a captains whim from the troops under his command, so the answer could be anywhere from 0-20 depending on his whim over who gets it (ruleswise Apothecaries/Sanguinary Priests and Standard Bearers are subsumed within the command squad, but fluffwise they are distinct positions within the company like the Captain and Chaplain). I imagine the Reclusiarch or a senior Librarian might have an old-skool Honour Guard of 1st Company Veterans.

Ny pic ive seen of a copany has the 100 marines and then the captain and his hounour guard. so it can be seperate, of course if someone dies out of his squad and he needs another man with him he can pull him out of the company. Hounour squad, the apoth is from the medic quarter, the banner bearer is perminant, company champion... well must be from company, but i imagine hes replaced from the reserve company, and if a better champion is found in the company swaps with him? other 2, prob vets he trusts. i would also say he prob picks them for specific reasons, ones bund to know stuff about machines so an ex tank commander or some such, ond another is bound to be someone he trusts as a good fighter, vet, ancient or some such, wise anyway. and just to say incase anyone says cant be more than 1000 marines, well its broken all the time and do scouts really count?

Libarians and chaplins having them, chappys should be busy with the dc, libarians may have some aids... really should be a captain thing though

I've always been a little puzzeled by the GW maths.

A Chapter has a 1000 marines

But, at full strength you'll have

10x10man Squads per company x10 companies = 1000

10 Captains each witha 5 man honour guard = 1060

26 Saguinary Guard = 1086

Chaptermaster and Honour Guard = 1092

Now comes estimates

Say 20 Librarians = 1112

If they each get an honour guard = 1212

Around 50 Sanguinary Priests = 1262

20 or so Chaplains (2 for each company give or take including Reclusiarchs) = 1282

the Honourguard for the 10 Reclusiarchs in that number = 1332

15 or so Techmarines = 1347

If you want to include crew for vehicles that gets to around 1450

The 1000 marines thing I think applies to "companies" anything outside of th companies 6 tacticals 2 assault and 2 devastator is not counted to the total as far as "battle brothers" goes because everyone else is a specialist outside of just the battlefield so therefore aren't just thrown into combat like regular battle brothers.....

Thats because in the Imperium everything is so black and white...

So The Imperium uses a binary base number system...

Thus there are 1k Space Marines in a Chapter,

just that 1k <> 1000

^_^

on topic..

I would say,

Each company will have One designated Honour Guard for the Captain.

Any other required Honour guards will be drawn from the rest of the Veterans in the company.

I'm heading towards the one per company as well. What has been lost in the later editions of 40k is the minor heroes. There used to be lieutenants for space marines, 2 wounds, ld 10, ws 5. Are they still part of canon and if so do they get their own honour guard?

All this begs the question on how a space marine would advance in the normal course of events. Scout -> Marine -> Combat Squad Leader (a nominal rank that has no stat changes) -> Sergeant -> Veteran Sergeant (off to the 1st company) -> Honour Guard (either drawn from the 1st company or permanently part of their designated company) -> Company Champion -> Lieutenant (executive officer for the company) -> Captain
