New guy

So i just grabbed the Wolf codex at gw today, starting a space wolves army and going to play them as space wolves (which apparently is rare to do in some circles). Any way I got myself a battle force and extra DP cause as a former chaos player the thing i wanted most were drop pods. Im thinking of running a nearly full drop pod army or at least a healthy amount of drop pods. Just wondering if you guys have any suggestions as I start to assemble my first Grey Hunters.

I have never played against Wolves, or seen them used so any advice would be awesome. Builds for HQ and any differences from other power armour that I may have over looked as I read the codex.

Just So you know Im thinking of a starter list that involves HQ of some sort, grey hunters in pods, Dread in pod, guard in pod, and maybe some scouts and MM/HF speeders ( my other wish i had as a chaos player)

Any help would be greatly appreciated as Im headed in blind and just bashing into this army.

For the wolftime! for Russ!

Hey man welcome to the halls of russ!

From reading your post it doesn't sound like you will be using blood claws but just in case you plan to i advise you don't. Well atleast not in drop pods. Scouts are awesome, i run mine as a full ten man squad with all the close combat tricks including a wg ofcourse. Land speeders are nice but i don't like MM/HF combo, too multi role. I asume you would deep strike any speeders in a pod list whicch means tey are likely to only get one shot off so just a MM is advisable, other wise i'd take typhoon/HB combo in a squadron of two or three.

I'm also not the biggest fan of dread pods but some people swear by them so i could be wrong. As for HQ's a solid choice in any list is a rune priest, might want to consider storm caller if he's in a pod, youb might even want to take a few rune priests with storm caller to protect your squishy hunters.

Also a piece of general advice when using infantry pods is to consider whether shooting the turn you land is worth atying bunched up, you have to watch out for plasma cannons, baal preds with flame storms, vindicators dark reapers, basically anything that will be able to take advantage of you being bunched up, if you think you want to shoot then deploy the quad all around the pod if you can and remember you have a full two inches of space from the pod to spread out.

Abyway thats all i can really think of at 1:30 am so congrats on joining the wolves and may russ guide your dice rolls.

Welcome!

If your looking at building a DP army, Id shoot for 1000pts to start with- say something like 20 GHs in DPs, a Dreadnaught in a Pod, a Landspeeder or two, and an HQ with Saga of the Hunter to go with some Wolf Scouts. I run drop pods alot- and let me tell you, good support from scouts and speeders can make or break you. BC Bikers arent bad either, especially for larger games.

I used to play Iron warriors not the blow the hole in the fortress wall ones, but the rush through the hole and kill everything inside ones. I used to play rhino rush backed up by vindi's and defilers. and i used DS termicide as a suidiced squad. Only other tactic was an addon squad of chosen with 5 plasma guns.

Aye welcome to the Fang laddy! Have an Ale!

Drop pods sound fun! Been trying to decide myself if I want to invest in some or not. Anyways, I would suggest running Njal and some WG Termies with you DPing Hunters to really mess up your opponent with some of his Lord of Tempests abilities. They can be pretty nasty at times! Just keep him alive and tossing Lightning Bolts and you should be golden! Also, LF's are also a very very good unit of ours, though I dont know if you would want to use them in this kind of list or not. But, 5x ML Long Fangs and attached WG w/Cyclone can dish out some hurting!

Good luck with the Wolves, and may Russ guide your blades!

In my nubness I happen to have a couple more new guy questions this one is probably straight forward, If I take 3 wolf guard can i split them up into 3 different squads so that there is no unit of wolf guard?

and if I get a dawn of war scenario when i deploy the troops to start do i get to put the wolf guard in with them since they are troops now?

Yes to both questions.

Since you are new to Space Wolves, you might find this helpful, it is a guide to army list building that I developed a while back. Just read it and think about how you can integrate Drop Pods (operational mobility) with your force.
