Varnish question

Hey all,

I have recently finished a model i have been working on for some tiem and have given it a good coat of gloss varnish. I am now looking to matt this down with a layer of spray mat tvarnish.

My question is, is games workshop matt spray varnish any good or is it really worth getting some testors dull cote which everyone recomends? And if the dull cote is trully superior where can it be ordered online for UK delivery?

I have no experience with non-GW stuff. However the GW stuff is fairly hit-or-miss in my experience. I've had batches that fog up models (and no, it's not always user error!) so you need to be really careful. GW spray is also "satin" (not properly matt) so it can create a shiny finish if sprayed heavily - not really a problem if you've already glossed them, but not something you'd want if you were looking to dull down the gloss. I liked that semi-shiny look on my old Marines, but not really any more. If I was using varnish nowadays, I'd avoid GW for that reason alone.

I'm going to contradict the Testor's recommendation. After nearly 20 years of using the product, I can now no-longer advocate for the product.

A couple years ago I got three bad cans in a row (from different lots, different stores, purchased months/years apart). They changed the formula around 2005-06 and it's never been the trusty product since. The best I can get out of a can of Dullcote is satin. I've tried all sorts of different weather conditions -- dry, humid, cold, hot, you name it. Always satin!

My current favorite flat agent is Krylon Flat Clear. Produces a dead-flat, near bullet-proof finnish. Every time...

Also, avoid GW sprays. The "matte" isn't and the gloss will sometimes "fog" a model (misty white layer after it dries). They are extremely sensitive to humidity. GW primers are spray paint - not true primers for more money than a primer.
