i must thank you, have been planning to do a logan wing for my DIY chapter - and have made 4 teminators so far - i will post pics at some point - but was running out of ideas to complete even the command squad, but you have shown even the 'standard' loadout can look cool with some imagination....

you sir, have set the bar - thankyou

Thanks guys, appreciate the comments. I suppose i was hoping to show that a knife and some green stuff can take standard models a long way :turned: Without too much sculpting in some cases! Even by tilting legs at the right angle when gluing to the base can change the dynamic of a pose. Always glad to hear people are getting ideas from me, just as well seeing as i get many ideas from everybody else on this board!

As for the subtlty, i've always considered a rule of thumb for modelling (at least standard units, not heros) as "Is the pose/proportions anatomically awkward? Do the original bits stand out too much?" in short, is it something that GW might produce? Having said that, the next batch of pictures will feature slightly more extravagent conversions ^_^

I look forward to seeing your terminators!

  • 2 weeks later...

I'd been looking forward to this update for a while now, only being able to get photos done now since i've been busy. So i've finally started rolling them out... Assault terminators! >: D

To guide you through my thought process when building assault terminators, i wanted to break out of the stereotype slow and hulking terminator. In my mind, as big and armoured as they are, assault terminators, particularly those of the White Scars chapter are to be fairly graceful and viscious in their killing. As such, from a modelling perspective, at least half of the troops should have advancing or at least dynamic poses.

The second thing, was to bring in the feral, mongolian imagery. My last update i had made some Storm Shields for them, which i have since cast (i'll need more for my bikers!) and glued to terminator arms. For ease of painting, i've only blu-tac'd the shield arms onto the body for the photos. Furthering the idea, Thunder Hammers were also a little too 'imperial' and at least from a visual standpoint, not sleek enough to match what i'm after. Instead, i thought back to IA:White Scars and thought of the Power Lance. From memory it gave a strength and initiative bonus but also became awkward to handle AFTER the charge. Considering these guys arn't using these whilst riding, I'm thinking a pole-arm power weapon with a very oversized blade warrants Thunder Hammer rules. The blades are from Orc swords.

After watching the movie Mongol (and also unfortunatly after putting in the order for 4 pairs of lightning claws!) i realized just how unmatching standard lightning claws would look next to round-shielded, spear-wielding TH/SS termies. There is a memorable scene where Genghis Khans forces riding towards the enemy draw paired tulwars whilst still galloping at them. The idea here is that a White Scars veteran using pairs of dueling tulwars will be able to quickly strike at an opponent's vital points, hence the re-rolled wounds.

To really distinguish these from normal power weapons, i wanted something that looked extra fast and sleek looking to suggest that they're designed to use slightly differently. For fellow Scars players, i think i've found a great source for these curvy swords! They're Dark Elf spear tips!

The spear & shield idea is awesome. However, the double tulwar just made me sick with envy. I too want some of that =D A friend of mine have got loads of DE that is just like garbage to him, since he doenst play and havent for a few years. I think I shall pay him a visit :D

very inspiring work Apostle, am loving how you make such characterful poses with minor conversions / small amounts of greenstuff (apart from the casted bits) , they look very professional

Keep up the good work! (and a steady stream of pics ;) )

Waaay cool! Again! :wallbash: I was unsure what to expect when you said graceful Terminators, but they look great, still pretty Terminator-y but less static. And I'm amazed that you managed to make a dynamic termie using those funky leaning-to-one-side legs :teehee:

great stuff!

Another update, which (almost) concludes the rank and file troops of the Stormwing.

I'll probably be adding teeth or tassles to the necklace since it's looking a bit bare at the moment...

This guy needed a fair bit of pinning to secure this pose ;)

As mentioned before, the idea was to make the terminators more dynamic. For references i looked to comic book characters and kung fu movies

Next up, i'd like to show off Veteran Sergeant Lehmei, the Kill-Master. Hopefully the hard rockers/metalheads out there will get the reference. I've also sculpted him a personal emblem on his chest, inspired by one very cool hat badge...

The remaining minis in the army would be one sergeant, an apothecary, a standard bearer, techmarine and "Belial"/Jubal Kahn.

.... Beginnings of a Chapter Master??

i really like the assault terminators you have started doing and think that the dual swords is a very good idea to represent the lightning claws.

one thing i must ask is how did you do the moulding and casting? as this is somehting that looks very useful and in this case adds alot to the army

What a fantastic idea: an all terminator White Scars army!

And your execution matches the idea in greatness. These termies are posed perfectly. I can't wait to see how they all look painted and massed together. I think the White Scars are an incredibly under-represented chapter and I enjoy seeing them get some love.

Thanks for the encouraging comments all. Thinking of some poses for my final Vet. Sgt. who will be modelled a little differently to act as my 'company champion' in the command squad (he keeps veteran sergeant stats though)...

zxyogi: I believe it's "on an IRON horse i ride" ^_^ but Killed by Death is such a BAMF song ;)

Boomsly: I don't know if i'm allowed to really discuss that publically, but instructions are all over the net. I'll PM you to get you started

Natanael: Cheers, the the sculpt will take a little while though... It's still a 40k army rather than 30k so the warband will be lead by Jubal who's the current Chapter Master. Having said that, i do plan on making him a pretty mean model, at least matching the detail levels of Marneus or Kantor. :)

On that last note, shall i make Jubal Khan entirely scratch? Or use GW parts? I would prefer casting afterward since i'd rather not paint directly over a mostly putty model (for future paintstripping options), and when things get cast, people want copies which i'd have then explain that it contains GW IP/I can't do it. Thoughts?

this is brilliant! in a few books i have read it states that termie armour is very manuverable (sp) despite it's size. you terminators really show that its a marine inside not just a block of armour.

the power sword conversions look great, very white scars

looking forward to Jubal, i would say use some gw parts if you need to be the more you sculpt the more it is your individual creation and therefore the cooler it is.

thanks very much for the pm :P , the main problem for me is finding out what is a good method and what materials to use as i have found many types of resin and silicone.

either way keep up the good modeling B)

Feel free to pm me any specific questions about my casting; but method wise i'd just recommend you research a LOT and try out which method works for you, or is appropriate for the type of part you're casting. Also depends on how much $$ you have to finance this. I know i'd love a vacuum chamber but since i dont have one, i resort to other ways of doing it. As for materials, i use PinkySil silicone and Easycast and Supercast Resin. Also try dusting a mould with talcum powder to break the resin surface tension when you pour
