A couple of my Black Templars

Arcturius

Recommended Posts

The Emperor protects, brothers!

I'm new here and I figured I'd introduce myself with a short intro and some fresh Black templar minis I did. :P

To the basics. I've started collecting WH40k minis 2 years ago. The painting was the thing that dragged me in  Started of with Tau, then Eldar and now the Emperor's light has brought me to my brother marines at last (although I still have the Eldar army ;P)

Anywho here are the images I spoke of earlier...do examine them and post your C&C

Please take note:

I was looking for above average table-top quality, not GD quality.

This is my first real try at NMM of any sort.

The bases aren't finished because I was lazy

Welcome to the Eternal Crusade Brother! I hope you enjoy your stay here at B&C! If you are ever looking for information on BT tactics or list building, feel free to take a look at my website (link is in my signature).

And, might I say, I absolutely love the NMM work you have done on these models. Especially the "gold". Looks most excellent; definitely worthy of the Black Templars name. :P

Nice paint job. I've never been a fan of NMM myself, but you pull it off reasonably well. One criticism is that it seems too, I don't know, vibrant. More like yellow than gold.

I like your Emperor's Champion. I got one of them to count as my regular Space Marine Captain, because the sword works really well as a relic blade. Also, we have the same Apothecary.

First of all, welcome into the Emperor's light! Also, microwave your Eldar ;) .

As for your models, they are very ambitious for a first start. The blacks are solid, the white is nice and smooth, which most painters struggle with. Your reds could use a little more basing/building up from the black undercoat. I hear the GW foundation paint works quite well from our Blood Angel brothers, though I've never used it myself (my only experience is with Dheneb Stone).

Your NMM gold is also a very good start, but could use some refinement, For one, don't be afraid to go all-out with highlighting. Some parts of the gold should be a solid or near-solid white, just because of "reflection." As they stand now, they're largely just yellow highlights on a brown base. I'm not saying so to be a prick or tell you you're a bad painter, by the way, just merely hoping to offer some advice ;) . Here are two good references for figuring out the dastardly art of NMM:

It is a tricky, tricky thing, but done right it works wonders for a model. As your gold currently is, it seems to follow the normal standards for basic colors, in that it highlights the raised edges of a certain piece. Metallics don't wholly subscribe to this idea: some parts, even though they are the highest parts of the surface, may be nearly or wholly black/brown depending on how the light hits them.

Again, I'm not looking to nit-pick or discourage you in the least. These models are quite nice as stands and well above table-top standards. I'm simply hoping I inspire/guide you to be a better painter than myself (which shouldn't be too hard by any means)!

^_^

Thanks :P

As I said this is my first real NMM and my skills still need refining but hopefully I'm getting there.

It's actually motivating to see someone else struggling with it. No offense haha. My friend had actually just convinced me to stop my attempts at NMM and go back to traditional metallics for the templars that I'm painting. Now that I saw this thread I'm sticking with my NMM practice. It might take me 300 years to get barely acceptable standards... but damn if it isn't fun trying, right?
