TL Autocannons on the cheap

How are people making TL autocannons for the dreadnoughts wihtout having to buy them on the forgeworld website? I can get 3 IG heavy weapon autocannons for $7.50 at the warstore. I am making a Codex list with 6 dreads and I want the three non ironclad ones to have ranged capabilities. I am initially experimenting with TLLC/missile launcher, but might want to try out 3 rifleman dreads. That would cost me $30 from the warstore's bits site. Any other ideas?

Easy peasy. Just buy $5 worth of variable length plastic rods. Just snip off the lascannon tubes, and glue in the appropriately cut and assembled 'autocannons'. For the left arm, try filling in the missile pod space with putty and then rinse-and-repeat with the plastic tubes. Enjoy your new Rifleman.
Ive seen a couple of good conversions using the TL ACs off the Planetstrike terrain.

Like these for example. I'm pretty much certain the same could be done with IG autocannons. Will look at this closer later, since I have spare Assault cannon dread arm and IG bits, but never bought any Planetstrike.

Converting the right arm is fairly simple when you have the lascannon arm. Just chop off the cannons and replace with Autocannons from the IG heavy weapon sprues. I kept the little supporting bit of plastic under the lascannons to better make the transition with the rest of the arm. I also glued the ammo drums onto the side of the arm to re-inforce the autocannon look.

The problem will be making a symetrical match for the left arm using the missile launcher. Haven't tried yet, but it shouldn't be the end of the world.

As for running three ... might be overkill. One will usually cripple a transport per turn, two if you're fighting a lot of mech. Having a third dread, I'd go for a lascannon or a melta to take on the heavier armor and get into close combat.

Since my dreads are magnetized I just used the aegis defense line autocannon sets in their entirety. Each kit's turret gives you a left and right handed autocannon. The Aegis defense line kit costs around $20, and they look fine without modification IMO, plus you get some rather nice barricades and a turret base in the deal.

I discovered a fairly easy and cheap way to make a TL autocannon for a dread. Granted buying the aegis defense line probably is easier, but those are hard to come by cheaply. Thus, I went to some of my favorite ebay bits merchants and did the following. Please check out my blog at: Gone to Ground.

If people like the conversion, I can post steps for creating the TL autocannon when I get my next few guns in.
