Thrall-Servitors

Just thinking is the way Space Wolves turn failed aspirants into thrall-servitors unlike them? By that I mean as the more humane and moral of the Chapters isnt stripping someone of their humanity and forcing them into slavery a bit against their moral code?

Just saying.

Better to put them out of their misery. A Thrall is dead meat.

Servitors are very necessary in the imperium so that is a valuable resource you are throwing away. Perhaps the one who failed and turned into Servitors became mindless mentals anyway or were do severly damaged in training where continued service could only be accomplished through servitor corps. I'm betting most able body and minded "failures" become bondsmen.

The most rebellious Skyclaws that do something quite terrible normally end up as Thalls as well.

Thing is, I get the impression that Thalls are those that have fallen in the jouney and were unworthy. Hence they turn anyone who fell on the path into servitors until they die again and earn their glory. By then the space wolf himself is for all perposes dead anyway. Iron Priests are much less merciful then your typical space wolf, as they are techmarines, standing aside from their brothers yet essencal to chapter functioning.

Thrall is just another word for serf. Most SW Thralls have not undergone conversion to some mindless automaton, but come from families that have served the Chapter for centuries, crewing ships, manning AD batteries, brewing ale, roasting venison etc.

Take a quick browse through the Codex and books and I think you will find the full answer there.

Short version is that the Thrall Servitors are those who failed the Iron Priest's Test of Iron (r p38 C:SW).

Those who man the ships are not serfs or thralls, they are natives of Fenris whose families have served the chapter with honor for generations. Throughout the Ragnar Blackmane series there are several references and interactions with these warriors who are referred to in a general sense as men and women who serve the chapter and the term given for them is Bondsmen which by Dictionary Definition is a serf/thrall but in the 40k universe it is somewhat better as they are free to move about, carry weapons, and have families something that serfs/thralls of other chapters do not have.

In addition (according to the Ragnar Saga from the Black Library) the Space Wolves do no do things like the rest of the Imperium. Instead of Thralls and Servitors in the conventional sense, they have Bondsmen. Fail Aspirants that did not reach the final levels nor get the implantation of the final geneseed. Among other manners for them to serve the Chapter they are chosen from their villages due to their skills and serve in other capacities within the Fang and Chapter.

They as Bondsmen serve to honor their Chapter and Homeworld rather than being enslaved like the rest of the Imperium. They hold a higher regard in honor and dedication for their service than any slave would or ever could. They have a higher morale because of this and do not just plod along like mindless automatons. Their way of giving back to the Chapter AND their Homeworld.

Bondsman (Bondi) is just the Scandinavian term for freeman and one social step up from Thrall, but both exist as part of the SW Chapter and are distinct from servitor thrall.
