Grey Mage
I think it's very dangerous to treat the Space Hulk pasture patty of a background story or even BL books as definitive sources. Dante is the longest lived marine that we know know of in that he has seen at least 1,200 years worth of days. The CSM and 13th Co. folks who disappeared into the warp may have earlier birth dates, but they aren't actually "older" in the way we usually consider the term. Just because I got on a train at the first stop doesn't always mean I've been on it longer than someone who got on at the fourth when we finally get to the tenth stop. If I got off at the third and got back on at the 9th, he's been on the train a lot longer than I have. If that makes sense to anyone else, do let me know. :( Indeed, of course they may very well have gotten on right in front of you, and just stayed quietly in their seats- we dont know. And thats why the 13nth Co are never included in such speculations, because no one knows. BrotherMoses
Not, Corbs... that was the SC in AoD, which I don't have on hand Seargent Cloten(Cluetin?), Bearer of the Shroud. Crynn
lysander was older than 200 when he got lost add 100 years for dante to become master which is still rediculously young, add 1000 years for dante being lost and you have a Dante at bare minimum of 1300 more likely 1400 really. I think in the normal terms of what we would consider living a life without effects from the warp dreadnaughts and things of that nature that it is farely safe to say he is the oldest living marine in its most basic sense. Leonaides
well didn't this thread descend into a steaming pile of misinformation quickly... There are fluff sources to suggest that dreads are put into stasis when not active, tho its quite possible that there's usually 1 or 2 active at any given time considering the constant warfare marines are involved in. Chaos marines- warp screws with time. 13th co- warp screws with time, even they dont know how long they've been alive subjectively. Marines as referred to as guys in pa- dante is amongst the oldest, but cleutin would be older if he's still alive. Meph- i'll have to check dates when i'm back home but i didn't think that space hulk was 1000years past. Dobermann
not to mention a dreadnought is about alive as the emperor. it smells like heresy.... Our Emperor is everwatching and leading us. <_< I do agree the stasis life of a Dreadnought and the time-warped life of Immaterium creature cannot be the same of a marine who lived every single day of his life. BOBMAKENZIE
Has anyone taken the timeline into account?I mean Dante is 1100 years old, but when exactly? :) During the Alchonis Campaign. Which takes place slightly prior to the books. Which means its After Mephy turned into Mephy but prior to M40.997 (I think thats right yes?) So you can safely add about 3-5 years onto that 1100 :D Though I get the feeling that once you hit about 900 you just stop carrying on the specifics. Kapitalist-Pig
Isn't there some fluff or info about Dante being a sergaent during the heresy in one of the older versions? I heard that somewhere but have yet to have any actual proof in front of me. Inquisitor_Lensoven
i've never heard/read anything about that, because most BA fluff infers that space marines can die of old age and that's 1 of 2 reasons dantes age is so incredible. I heard that somewhere but have yet to have any actual proof in front of me. And another interweb rumour is born. Somewhere, someone will use the immortal line - "I read it on the internet..." But no. That sounds more like someone's mixed up one of the possible origins of the Sanguinor with Dante. shatter
The name Dante has been used in an HH book. Not associated with BA though IIRC. Just a guy with the same name. Inevitable given the size of the population within the galaxy... Either that or maybe the guy from Clerks is our Chpatermaster. Jakobus
But on the OP - Dante has been Chapter master for 1100+ years, and at this point I have not seen any thing reporting another Chapter Master serving in the position for longer Whether or not he is actually the oldest, and depending on your definition of age and not counting Dreadnaughts is one of those this that has been said but has also been contradicted a half dozen times as well. garfey
Either that or maybe the guy from Clerks is our Chpatermaster. All I can think of is that the previous chapter master was killed in battle when Dante was his 2nd in command (brought in especially for the action) and him saying - I wasn't even supposed to be here today! </hijack> Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/211692-something-i-noticed-while-reading-the-codex/page/2/#findComment-2524118 Share on other sites
