Mephiston in his new clothes

Painting of my Hydra's Teeth Chapter has been coming along nicely and I thought it was about time I slapped a bit of paint on my Mephiston mini.

My chapter colour scheme is different from BA standard - a bit darker, more akin to Flesh Tearers. I also wasn't too keen on gold artificer armour so I use a more business-like "steel" finish to gird my Chapters finest warriors.

Anyway, here is my Mephiston....

I don't think the pictures show it very well, but I have painted the eyes with the same kind of "psychic glow" as on the psychic hood and force sword.

Please feel free to share your alternative colour schemes, I would love to get inspired by community members' efforts.

How did you get that nifty glow effect ?

Model looks great and very intimidating!

As a side note, does anyone else hate those damn poles with horned skulls he has on his shoulders as much as I do ?

I think if I ever break down to get a Mephy in my army I will file those off!

Great looking model. Would you care to briefly explain what you did for the "steel" coloring?

Both Mephi's look FANTASTIC! With our Mephi model being so dated (He's so small now in comparison to the new models) you see so much of the same ole paint scheme.

To the OP - Your scheme really lends a gritty "grimdark" feel to Mephi.

I absolutely love the glowing eyes effect you both have done, espically yours Gumo, they are so bright! It really lends to that look utter power Meph wields. I also dig the non-blond hair look.

much props, Top-notch work both of you.

To Midnight Runner: Did you just slice off everything south of his head and cowl for your conversion?

Gumo, the pictures seem to show the glow very well- it looks amazing, I like the color scheme, it really 'pops'.

Itd be a pleasure to rain plasma death down on a model such as that.

I varnished the figure last night so your plasma will now be ineffective !!! <_<

In response to a couple of questions, my painting methods are very simple - mainly because I want the mini to be finished quickly and I'm not very artistic. Here is a brief run through:

Spray Chaos Black

Basecoat consists of: Mechrite red (robes), Bleached Bone (gloves), Boltgun metal (armour), Deneb Stone (face)

Make a cup of tea (milk, one sugar)

Devlan mud wash everything apart from the armour

Badab Black wash to armour

Paint a couple of assault marines while washes dry

Make a cup of tea (milk, one sugar)

highlight everything with the originial colour

Make a cup of tea (milk, one sugar)

further highlights: Mithril silver to trim on armour and shoulder skull, blood red to robes, white to gloves and face

Psychic lightning was done by using black as my base, then hawk turquoise, then 50:50 mix of turquoise and white, finally white

Extra steps on the face: purple glaze, then detail the eyes the same as sword and psychic hood

Add a bit of detail, make a cup of tea (milk, one sugar), and it's job done.

Needless to say, the most important part of the process was the cups of tea (milk, one sugar).

I never liked the blond hair and I did kind of like the vampiric overtones of the earlier edition Blood Angels so I went for the classic Peter Cushing pale face and black hair on all of my models. I prefer my minis with helmets, but all those without have the pale skin look.

I've painted my Tycho's artificer armour in the same way and after doing mephiston and liking the look I will definately be using this scheme to do my sanguinor, dante, astorath and sanguinary guard. I just need to think about adding a bit of colour in to break up all that metal.
