Pre-made DIY Chapters

I just can't seem to get my own Chapter right after something like 10-20 different attempts, and I'm starting to get tired of it. I know that there are a lot of Chapters out there that were listed officially but never given fluff, so I'm thinking about using one of those and writing the fluff myself. Does anyone have any tips they want to share as I start to try this out?

It's pretty much the same deal as a pure DIY, just the name and color scheme has already been selected for you. Depending on the Chapter, some have nothing more than a color scheme and name, some have a few brief mentions scattered around, and some have pages and pages of lore. The bulk of them fall into the first category (there's something like a couple hundred Chapters that have been named but not given any official fluff), so you have a lot of room to work with.

I just wanna ask. Where is the difference between this and pure DIY?

You make sure that it might be prone to changes.

The Pyre, CSM existed for some time but then got some information. So you must be prepeard to throw it all down the sink someday. Also, the information might be found i some codex or book out there, it's just not been put up on the net yet.

Mostly that I have something to start with, a basis from which I can launch. In a lot of ways, it's much easier than trying to start from absolutely nothing. The name, home planet, and color scheme (not necessarily on those last two) can give some suggestion of the Chapter's character.

Well, that sucks. Disencouraging, but not enough to stop me. I didn't know that that might happen, thanks for the heads-up.

Don't be discouraged.

The thing with a pure DIY is that it takes time, effort and a lot of consternation. My Blazing Sons (shameless plug) have been in development for almost a year now, on and off. My other main chapter the Corsairs Serpentis have been going for even longer.

Mainly this is because every time I make some progress either something comes up in my life that forces my attention elsewhere or I simply lose focus on the task at hand and get distracted by other, shinier things. The thing you have to do is to stick with it, through thick and thin.

You might be making so many separate attempts because you keep changing what you want from the chapter as the perfect embodiment of what you find to be the warrior ideal, maybe not but it sounds a little like it. Like you're not satisfied with one of your DIY's because you now have a new idea to work with.

It's less about what's perfect and more about who that chapter is and what their core characteristics are. You stick with those core ideals and the chapter can take shape around them. They have to be comprehensive themes too. Not just 'we like motorbikes', for example. This is where researching real world cultures and warfare comes in handy. You do this and you find the cultural and social influences that drove that particular people or army to fight or live in that particular way.

It's not easy to create a DIY, but then if it was easy it wouldn't be fun now would it? :)
