Kurb
I like to make threads with long posts. This is shall be one of those threads. I hope you all enjoy it. The year is 1999. I am attending a community college in Easten North Carolina, USA. The particular strumpet I am dating likes to go see movies in a town a few miles away. In this town there was a store and in this store there were little platic and pewter warriors that had not a battlefield. I saved these few brave souls. My journey truely began with the purchase a WHFB Box set (The old high eleves/Lizardmen box.) I enjoyed the few games I got to play, but once I saw the 40k stuff I pretty much dropped the pointy ears and got the 40k box with Space Marines and Dark Eldar. I painted them a horrid black and white tiger stripe and played maybe 3 games. There was just no way I could afford more models and and honestly had no one else to play. Thus into the shoe box and under the bed they lay, stuck in their stasis pods until about 7 weeks ago. Now the year is 2010... By sheer chance I found my box of warriors while me and the wife were visiting my parents. Some of the elves had decent paintjobs and I thought what the hell why not get them out and show them to some of my nerd fellows at work. One of my friends thought these mighty plastic hero's were one of the best things ever and began to tell me about his days playing BattleTec or some sillyness. One thing led to another and we discovered we had a Friendly Local Gaming Store (FLGS) that not only has a solid group of veteran players it also has great deals on models. Thus a plan was hatched and our quest to begin 40k began... We started with a simple idea. Get the AoBR box set and begin playing. This quickly morphed (before our first game mind you) into poxying Orks for Tau and list configuring for 500 points. I knew vanilla marines were not only done to death, but did not have the depth of story that would interest me. I read of the Space Wolves, and while making McWolfen WoofWoof Keeper of the Wolf Necklace, the HowlingWolf Blade, and his routine of Woof Wolves has a consitancy to it that few can rival I was pretty turned off. The Dark Angels were green, the Grey Knights didn't even have a book, so it came down to the Black Templars and the Blood Angels. I decided to leave the crusades to the middle ages and thus my Blood Angels chapter began. With all this acomplished a date was set and place was decided. On my kitchen table blood was to be spilled...death to the Tau Orks! to be continued.... *edit...I actually used the wrong spelling of tales. wow....*
Brother-Captain Devlonir
Wow.. this is so similar to my personal experience. Returned myself by chance at the time the BA codex came out again, I used to play the edition just before you ( remember the Templar/Dark Eldar box coming out but didn't buy it ), so my box was Blood Angels and Orks. This chapter grew on me back then and I loved painting red. So now, 10 years later, I am also back to the game and collecting BA :-D

Rybnick
Pretty close to my story as well. Started out in high school and had several friends into 40k at the time, but we rarely played and when we did it was largely only halfway in accordance to what the rules dictated. Flash forward 10 or so years and I start a new job and randomely discover that several of my new coworkers are 40k gamers. After a few weeks of going to the FLGS to watch them play I decide to make my own triumphant return to the game. I quickly post my old Eldar and Dark Eldar on ebay and within a week sell them off. Now I have a hard choice to make, what army to play! I'd decided I wanted to go with marines due to their general utility and awesomeness so after perusing a few chapters and considering just making my own chapter I was a little crest fallen and altogether stuck on where I what I wanted from my marines Cue the owner of the FLGS mentioning that in a month or so the Blood Angels would have a new codex, me not knowing about any of the BA's fluff I quickly did some wiki and lexicanum research and fell in love with the chapter. Several hundred dollars and a few months later I'm very happy with my BA, and am really digging being back in the 40k hobby.
Exonec
Your stories reminds me of my own story. I played WH40k even before high school but stopped due to lack of opponents and interest but started again with my beloved Blood Angels now 8 months ago, after a 10 years absence. I thought I was the only one to return to the caotic world of the dark milennia actually. Fun to see others that has the same experience.

bloodancient
Well since we're going back in time and recounting tales of old. I moved to a different state in high school and didn't know anyone. So I sold almost everything I had to a friend back home. Fast forward 12 or 13 years later I'm in Illinois and walk past a GW store peek my head in take alook around the manager tells me that my beloved BA are getting a new Codex in acouple of months. So I go home tear half the house apart finding the few minis I have left and decide it's time to start up again I'm lucky enough to have 2 GW's within 40 min of the house so I go to the closest through down for the rulebook and a quick epic and a box of Tac 5000 points later I just got my first battlefoam and holy schnit it is awesome. Kurb
My goal here is to tell my tale and read others prose about things they have learned and are learning. Hopefully I can do another story tomorrow.
Brother-Captain Devlonir
Well.. about what I learned since my return? Hmmm.. In the months since I returned I have been very busy rebuilding my army and trying to get my hand on any game I can do. I also got into contact with a bunch of other players in my FLGS and found out there really is a culture there of small groups doing their thing and no real community. So, I have a mission! I am planning on really making a small community out of the people there, with small scale tournaments, terrain building, marker building, etc.. So.. really, a lot of my time on the game so far has been spent working on my own army, haven't even gotten to paint anything yet! (but check my album for a few pics B)) and playing a few games vs other marines, orks or Tyranid. All of these games have been fun but I still need to find the tactic I like most of all. The main lesson I have learned though, is that the Internet really helps make this hobby more fun! I used to play in the pre-internet era and barely had any contact with gamers outside the FLGS. Now with the internet, and especially a site like B&C, you have so much sources for help and inspiration on every aspect of the game it is amazing! Also, another main difference I've learned: As a teenager, you didn't have enough money to get the army you wanted. Now as an adult, I don't have the time to build the army I want :D
garfey
I too have a similar tale, I'm amazed that so many people have the same experience. I started out in 2nd Ed (about '94 - I still have the 2nd Ed box set with all the bits :D ) also with the Blood Angels (I got the BA Army Box for Xmas, it was amazing!) - then I moved to the US in 95 and got a few people into 40K over there, though getting the bits back then was a mission!! There were 2 shops in all of Miami that sold stuff, so once a month my Mum had to drive me and my friends for about half an hour to go to the shop to stock up on minis... We had so many minis we used to have weekend long battles (10k points a side on a 12 foot by 6 foot table I made). Then I came back to the UK and went to Uni and discovered Alcohol, and women (ok, the internet lol).. time passed. About a year ago now I met a guy my age who turned out to be an IG player - after much reminiscing he gave me a couple of marine sprues he had spare...and that's when it all began again! I vowed to only buy new things after I'd painted what i already had - i suffered from unpainted army syndrome massively when i played last time. - but that has been short lived. I started out with Dark Angels as I still had the Angels of Death Codex and they were close to my old BA but with a physical book - PDF? P? D? F? Noooo. Then in April, GW release the new BA, and all was right with the world, I felt the balance had been returned to the force! However, I had to finish painting my DA before getting any new stuff - it nearly worked too!! Just got to finish a Tac Squad, and a Term Squad - but the rest is done.. honest. Anyway to see where I am now check my P-log in my sig - So far i have, 6 DC, Astorath, Furioso + Drop Pod, and I've started my 1st RAS, and I'm loving it. I will say, I still haven't played a game, but I'm just enjoying the painting ATM. Sorry to hijack thread, but felt like a wander down memory lane and thought i'd take someone else along for the ride.

Now as an adult, I don't have the time to build the army I want :D I totaly agree with you there! It's hard for me to find the time to paint the AoBR orks so I can justify buying more Blood Angels. Exonec
@JamesI: Yes, there shouldn't be, but when you have the monthly income of a student on a swedish university your income isn't oil shejk. Although I have been tempted for a long time to buy all those minis I've been looking at. ;) Blood Angels and Space Marines just have so many awesome kits that I want to buy it all and go on a conversion frenzy... bloodancient
Some of the things I have learned is it is truely better for me to buy what I want and not what I "need". I've learned that MC are fun to kill so long as you look it's owner in the eye as it dies. Do not underestimate the bolter. And probably most important play every game you can. But these things are all ancillary. We all know and hav learned these things. It's the why that your asking right. Like why is the Baal the baddest tank well thats because it can hold any thing at bay and destroy almost an thing. Oh wait till you go big and get into apoc thats what i''m all about now huge battles fighting off titans and chaos armies of terminators. go and watch one it will change you and almost consume you. Glorious.
Alys
I'm the same, but add in that I never played a game before, and barring a quick thing recently to test the rules, still haven't! It really helps to have the LFGS though. Where I live, there is one in the next town, but they abhore GW products, while the GW store in my town is normally full of either kids or adults who munch down on the codexes for breakfast, and can't help but to come over and make suggestions, or tell you how they wouldn't do that when you make a move. That's kinda what puts me off :/ The game is ok, the fluff is amazingly amazing, I'm even starting to enjoy painting the things, but it's some people (which you get in every hobby/workplace/etc) that make it worse. Brother-Captain Devlonir
Can't help FLGS culture unless you try and change it. Maybe just voice out how their characters make it really unattractive for new players and that they should maybe look in the mirror. Or just swallow your pride and learn from the moment. Possitive thinking always helps a lot in these hard situations. Don't blame them for being mean to you, but point out you are new and ask if they can forgive your mistake instead of probe so hard on it. Just don't do that too often or they will feel you are purposefully cheating (like an Orc player who doesn't even own a Codex in my FLGS). Be open to them and they will open up. But also don't be pushy for their help and attention. If they don't help, use the internet ;-)
bushman101
my story is similar. To keep it short... Picked up the game in '95-ish. Picked BA because I liked the models (I thought Corbulo and Meph were cool looking). Had almost all of my models stolen when I stepped out to grab some food. Didn't re-invest because I was short on cash and the pdf codex of 4th made me think the BAs were getting 'Squated'. I eventually bought back in after BA got a proper codex. Got AoBR, painted my marines red and traded the Orks for a DropPod. My army has been growing since.
Kurb
Well brothers I am back. In my first installment I wanted to give you a back story, a how I came to be. It was really cool to see how many of us have returned in similar fashion. When last we left the Great Battle of the Kitchen Table was upon me. 500 points of Blood Angels 500 points of proxyed (AoBR Ork)Tau's and 5 hours of rule book flipping. I have luck in the fact I am learning with a friend. Generally we just laughed at each other and our sillyness. That said I did get a couple of things to remember. 1) Railguns will make librarians that are just strolling the battlefield (reading book and what not) go POOF! 2) The rule book included in the AoBR box is REALLY well made, this continues to amaze me as I keep reading the damned thing finding a new rule a day. 3) Tau would be routed by a class of 5yr olds in close combat. Needless to say our first few battles like this were more learning the motions than anything else. Soon we ventured into the Friendly Local Gaming Store (FLGS) where I found not only That Fricken Guy (:cuss) but some nice friendly players as well! Brother-Captain Devlonir
I had my first big battle this weekend myself. 1500 points of what I had so far (a tact in razor, jumping RAS, DC in rhino with reclusiarch, Baal predator and Sang Guard) against my friend's Orks (Battlewagon with Brunas and Big mek, 2 trukks with shoota boys, some loota boys, a nob biker squad of 5 + warboss and 3 deff koptas). I completely lost the Annihilation game with all my army being wiped out and me only having 2 KP off his trukks.. What I learned from this battle? - The Big Mek Force Field is just as good as our shield of sanguinius but more reliable! - Offering your army piecemeal to an Ork is suicide - Burnas in a transport are painful! - Deepstriking is not always the best option.. Still, loving the game and loving my Blood Angels! I will be ready for him next week ;-)
Kurb
Early Battles Confident that me and my partner in crime (We'll Call him Tau-J) had a firm enough grasp on the rules and order of play we decided to make our way to our FLGS (cape fear games). The store is more Magic the Gathering oriented that Table top games, but a decent community exisits there on Sundays as that is ....wait for it......Warhammer day!!! woot horray etc etc. In this entry into my tale I will recount some of the butt whippings that have been piled upon me and why I think they ended as they did. While this wasn't the first game I had played it could have been one of my more entertaining games. Me and Tau-J had just finished a quick 1000k game (still working on those rules!) and some of the hyper children had been perstering us the whole time. Sooo to not be a complete ass I agree on playing a doubles game. Me and a 16yr old vs the elder player in the store and a 12 year old. To say it went poorly was an understatement. It was a wacky MegaNobz ?army and my blood angels vs a vanilla marine army and the elder players very efficent orks. 750 each person. I was assuming the 16 yr old had some kind of clue what he was doing. But when I compared what appeared to by 75 models in the elder players group to the 20 in the 16 year olds group i knew I was in trouble. I'm not a bat rep writter at this point but the meat of the story... I never got a charge off, the elder player basically played the 12 yr olds models for him, I deep struck into the middle of just fricken everything, and we got mowed by turn 3?. But I learned somethings! and at this point that is what matters. 1) Orks mean lots of models. 2) Having a plan is generally a good idea. 3) stay away from annoying children at all costs. 4) stay away from annoying children at all costs. 5) Blood Lance is VERY random (go go 9 inch cast!) 6) elite ork armies are amusing to watch get slaughtered by a large group of boyz edit* saving my work :D Early Battles continued A few weeks later I found me a Nidz army to fight. Through my extensive reading of forums and what not, I had a couple of assumptions about Nidz. 1) They are going to swarm me if I let them. 2) They are more assulty than me so I need to soften them up first. 3) Nidz aren't known for their shooty. 4) I need to shooty them-up before a choppy them up. With this WEALTH of knowledge I thought myself ready to war these bugs. I had talked with my opponet several times. A honestly great dude. He had offered help with just about everything, and was having a just awful streak of dice luck. His list was something like this (prepare for butchering) 2 bugs that poop bugs 1 bug with some assault 6 gun and big claws 3 flamer bugs 2 psycic bugs 2 groups of 4 warriors with template cannons (we come back to this) lots of little bugs 1 group of blade armed running around no gun CC bugs 2 groups of 15? genestealers My list was ...awkward 1 reclus 2 melta/flamer fist 10 man AMS (jumpers0 1 tac squad + rhino dante 2X sang priests 3 dreads (flamer/hvy flamer, asscann, las/missile) 5 scouts (5x sniper) My memory is foggy, so forgive ommissions. I had decided to keep dante, a priest and 1 AMS squad in reserve so I could get the jump on the rear of his lines (was a cap and control game). His first turn the Warrior bugs start firing some template gun....all....8....of....them.... After 24 some odd wounds stack on my single AMS on the board I ask him...."Who knew bugs were so shooty!?" After the death of my sang priest and another round of shooting and ANOTHER round of shooting the owner of the nidz army asks what my opponent why was he dropping all those templates????!?!? Turns out only 1 per group could have this giant template of doom gun. This is pretty much how the whole game went for me. I underestimated the ability of the bug pooping bugs to completely swarm me with little bugs, I think he almost ran out of gaunts. By the end of the game, I was surrounded by gaunts, warriors, etc. I had managed to nuke a bug with dante's melta, and Dante (i forgot hitnrun) was getting mowed by his stealer swarms. But again I learned... 1) Remember your rules! I could have left that Genestealer group in the dust with hit n run. I never rolled for Red Thirst, and asked tooooo late about the warriors template weapon. 2) Make sure an army isn't making itself bigger for free. 3) Losing a priest on the first turn makes me sad 4)a single scout can hold off 5+ evil bugs by sheer will alone. 5) a list without synergy is doomed to fail 6) I needed some dang long range fire support!!! More Battles to come! edit 2 spelling
bloodancient
Brother Kurb you are better at battle reps then you think very nicely done I think we all understand what has happened here from the reading. And saying that nids arent shooty is like saying orks arent shooty if you have 60 boys firing at you the chance that your marines walk away unharmed is 0. it happens you'll get there. Kurb
Believe it or not this isn't thread necromancy, its me not being lazy and making a new post in my little series. I've been busy painting up my goons. Sadly football season continues to kill gaming in my area, but reports are looking up for that to change soon!. I will try and add some pictures of my slightly below average painting skills. Had another "Learning the rules" battle with my buddy JohnTau last night. His list (as always) 4x big group of kroots with kroothounds HQ suit with 2 buddies Plas/Misspods 2x trio of suits with plas/miss pods 2 Broadsids with shield drones Hammer Head Ion Head 5x Pathfinders (markerlight whores that they are) + their obligitory transport 6ish fire warriors. My list is in constant flux. We stay at 1750 for some level of consistancy. I have decided to go DoA all out. This fine cold Carolina evening I had: Dante + HG 3meltas Epostilary +JP (sang sword/prefered enemy) 2 sang priests 2 JP's 2 Pwr Weapons 1x assualt squad 10 marines 2 meltas 1 Fist 2x assualt squad 20 marines 2 meltas 1 Fists 2 hand flamers Vang Vet groupd 2x pw 2 x Storm Shields 1 THammer. Pretty basic list. I'm sure it could use improvements, but its what I have as an all comers right now. The board has lots of terrain. Probably 60% coverage. This was fine with me because when me and TauJohn play its really just for kicks, learning rules, and practice for when we play others. This also made DoA a good bit more challenging. Being I reserved everything I think it's safe to skip to the bottom of turn 2 where I arrive. TauJohn (TJ) setup in what I would assume is a classic castling deployment. Tanks/HQ's Transports Pathfinders and Broadsides were snuggled up together in the middle of his zone. The kroot strung out in a big half circle shape to create a buffer from my attacks. He shimmies and wiggles his tanks around and expands his little half circle. My turn I start rolling for reserves. I have my targets picked out. I will place the libby and 2 ASM (Assualt marines) squads and a priest on one side. The vets in the middle with the other ASM w/ priest in the middle as well. It was going to be tight but SURELY I wouldn't mishap! Not me!...sigh.... The vanguards land right on target! The other 2 squads on the right edge land so the priest can give FnP to both units (Horray!) and the final squad flies straight into the side of a 2 story building.... I roll a 4 on the mishap and TJ giggles as he places the whole squad in difficult terrain on the FAR FAR side of the table away from everything. I roll for the dreaded 1's (dangerous terrain test when landing into difficult terrain)and lose 1 melta and one other marine hopefully the marine that gave the group bad directions). My shooting wipes out one of his Kroot walls minus 5 dogs (this is from 20 marines with melta's, Bolt pistols, and a hand flamer that gibbed 2 of em) to everyones surprise the 3 left dogs stayed and started to growl. The Vanguards with all their shiney weapons charge into another large Kroot Group. His dogs go first and kill......2 marines right off the bat...wait what? THEY KILLED 2 ()#&%)Q(#%&)#$& Vanguards right off the bat. I hit back and wif most everything. How that is possible I do not know. The Kroot hit back and kill off another Marine. Luckily the Thunder Hammer didn't miss and they Kroot roll a 4 for leadership and stay. Round3 TJ opens up on the two 10 man groups with the priest and libby. I have minor losses, TJ couldn't really get LOS on most of my forces (by design *pats self on back for one good idea*). His IONHead drops 3 wounds, I drop 3 FnP saves. Life is good so far. In combat his dogs charge the ASM group with the libby and the priest. I had placed the priest on the outer ring of the group so he could FnP buff both squads. Had the dogs ran like they were supposed to this would have been irrelevent. This was not a night for things to go as they were intended. 3 of the 5 dogs drop something like 5 wounds on my priest. He dies, I start to get concerned. Combat finishes off the dang mutts but the damage had been done. The only priest I had on the table might as well have been on the other side of the world and the Tau were frothing at the chance to shoot with no FnP The dumbarse vanguards tie combat with the kroot again and mange to lose ANOTHER vanguard. Thats right for those keeping up. I had lost 4 uber expensive vanguards, misshapped a 3rd of my force, and my source of FNP in reasonable reach in the first 2 rounds of shooting/combat and I had lost this 300 odd points to roughly 90 points of Kroot..... I was beated, dejected, and honestly thought it was over. TJ still had 6 suits coming on the board to rapid fire me in the ares and I was wallowing in self pitty. To my eyes I had lost! I had lost my "hammer" unit and the precious priest. I honestly thought I didn't have a chance, but decided I would go out swinging. (crowd roars). Turn 4 TJ opens up again on marines. Without FNP the massed fire of the Tau start to really make a dent in my squads. He moves guys back to try to avoid the charge as much as possible. In combat the last vanguard has had enough and rips the kroot a new one. Shrugging off some 4 wounds before he gets to even swing and delivers 2 wounds back. The kroot book arse back towards their table edge. My turn Dante' has had enough and lands his honor guard right in the middle of the Tau armor. My ASM squads warm up their melta's as well and start the push towards the tau center. With the Kroot fleeing and another unit wiped out nothing is protecting his side armor now. Dante and the HG fire on the transport wrecking it, the ASM squad fires on the IonHead missing and causeing me to curse. In anger I charge the s10 sword and rerollable hits of of the PFist and everything else into the Ion head. Typically the Ibby misses everyone of his swings twice, but the Sarg, furious over the death of his brothers climbs atop the zeno tank and tears the cannon off. With nothing in charge range I try and position everyone as close to the HGnoviate as I can and prepare for another round of rapid fire ;) Time to leave work, will finish tonight! ***Finishing up Edit*** Turn 5 Some what concerned the Tau reserves finally show up. 2 groups of 3 battle suits land pretty much exactly where I was standing just two turns ago. One in rapid fire range, one group not. I had hoped TJ would go for the stranded squad slowly trudging across the board (walked them out of terrain and rolled a whopping 3 for run) but it was not to be. TJ is a wiser commander than me in our young 40k careers. The Pathfinders, fire warriors, and pathfinders unload in the honor guard dropping 3 including the Noviate (curses curses curses). Everything else in sight opens up on the left overs (the single vanguard, libby group, and the other ASM squad). When the smoke cleared I had no more vanguard, a PF sarg and libby, and a 4 man asm squad with a PF. My forces were hurt, but more importantly they were very very very pissed off. I have a motto: "when in doubt...charge". So by Sang. I did. Dante and his 2 remaining HG charged the Tau HQ and his boyfriends. The ASM group without the libby charged one of the newly arrived 3 zeno suit groups. and the libby charged the Pathfinders. The long lost ASM group plodded ahead taking a pot shot at one of the tanks with their melta and missing. Dante easily cleaved the HQ suit in half while his HG brothers failed to do a single wound to the body guards The bodyguards in turn manged to wound Dante. (He had 1 wound already from some random shot or something). The Librarian and Sarge nailed all but one of the pathfinders who amazingly held. The PF+4 group wiped one of the suit groups and rolled a wonderful 6 for consolidation, which they used to get into position to block a possibly rally of the still running kroot. Kroot who had a total of 12 inches to go to get off the board 3 turns ago, but were literally moving 3/4/2 inches per turn respectively. We rolled for 6 and the dice Gods wanted more blood. Turn 6 was quick. TJ had little to shoot at, most of my units were in combat or out of LOS. I had little to shoot out bc I didn't really have any guns left. :P Combat from both sides had Dante dieing to friggin Tau battle suits and a Kroot counter charge. However one mighty HG held out under amazing odds! The Libby and PF sarge chilled out in the ruins picking out pieces of Pathfinder from their armor, the lone PF sargent stood in the middle of it all wondering how they ended up in this mess and the lost ASM squad stun/shaking a Hammerhead hoping they would actually get to fight next game. We counted up kill points. I had lost The Lord Commander of the Blood Angels, a Vanguard squad, a Priest. 99% of two ASM squads. He had lost 2 groups of Kroot, a transpot, a pathfinder group, a QH and his routine. Incredulous...I had won. (At least I think we counted everything correctly) Things I learned. 1) Keep going, you never know what might happen. 2) Learn the rules, I see now I didn't mishap, I landed in difficult terrain. Thats a dangerous terrain test, not a mishap. This would have changed the game for me dramatically. 3) Shut up and play. Getting flustered over little plastic men is no fun. Cyto
the final squad flies straight into the side of a 2 story building.... Was this a ruins ala 40k terrain? Usually a 2 story building doesn't cause a mishap, just a dangerous terrain test. The only way you can mishap is to land off of the table, onto "impassible terrain" or a friendly/foe model.
