Brother Corbulo. Horrible <------> Amazing

There is always plenty of talk about Meph, Dante, Seth, Lemartes and the rest of BA characters but what about our old demoted HQ corbulo?

Sure he is in the Elites section now but I thought he deserves a mention and some discussion about his pros, cons and how you feel he works or doesn't work in the Blood Angels Army.

I personally haven't had too much experience with him, but from what I can tell he seems to be well costed and without many controversial abilities, nothing game breaking anyway. I think this has lead to the lack of discussion about him. Fairly reasonable points good, easy to understand abilities with simple application in most cases and not being a combat monster saves him from comparisons that some of our HQ choices find them drawn into.

So BA enthusiasts, or people prying where they shouldn't be (we can be quite the secretive chapter). What wisdom and experiences can you share about the leader of our sanginary priesthood?

Regards

He is in desperate need of a ward save.

The 2+ FNP is all well & good, but power weapons make short work of him.

On a possitive note he slayed Lysander. His rending weapon is a nice touch & His re-roll has helped preserve the Sanguinor more times than I care to mention.

I have found that his re-roll ability to be rather good. It does not always work but has played a crucial part in a fair few games. Still I am not sure if Corbs is always worth the points as his own abilities are a little off. First of all I do not like the 2+ FNP. Seems too good at some times but then it is easily negated by power weapons. Recently he went head to head against some orks who had no power weapons and with his combat squad really made a mess of things for my opponent, that 2+ means that he is one tough bugger to hurt. On the other hand, if the ork has a living nob with a klaw it would have been touch and go.

I think he would have been better with a 4+ FNP and a 4+INV. This way you would always have a 4+ back up.

Honestly, I'm still a bit on the fence with him, maybe with a leaning towards liking the guy on the tabletop. In 'Ard Boyz, he cut the unluckiest Leman Russ (it came on the table next to me it tried to plasma Corb's squad and it scattered onto itself) in half with his chainsword. On the other hand, in combat against MEQs, a regular priest with a power weapon does more damage, at least with my rolls. Overall, I say his combat prowess is a wash, with the extra attack, rending and higher strength good against horde, but not so much against power armor.

That brings us to his 2+ FNP. It's nice and all, but it does absolute jack against Orky McKlaw.

Now, on to his reroll. This ability's value depends largely on what's in your list. Sure, a reroll is always awesome, but it's MORE awesome to use to make sure your VV squad lands in assault range, or your Baals outflank on the right table edge.

To put it another way, we can bust him down to point cost. We have 50 for being a priest, lets say another 15 for the extra wound, another 20 or so for his weapon and added I, 5 for his 2+ self FNP, and 5-25 for the reroll, depending on what you're running. So, in my mind, he's actually worth 95 to 115 points. If we break down his abilities as wargear we would or wouldn't take in our army list, it makes it easier to see if we want him or not.

Another point in his favor is the fact that he doesn't take up his own Force Org slot!

He once had an amazing day keeping Astorath alive in combat by re-rolling his 4+ against a powerfist and then getting mad and killed Bjorn the Fell Handed with his mighty chainsword!

Most of his time is spent hanging around with my sternguard or devs soaking up fire

Seeing as he's only 15 points more expensive than a basic Sanguiary Priest with Jump Pack and Power Weapon I think he's nearly a must have. You gain higher BS, W, I and A along with a S5 rending weapon, 2+ self FNP and the re-roll. For 15 points! ^_^ Attach him to an RAS/VAS in a Stormraven or Land Raider and watch how quickly those boosted stats pay for themselves.

I've had games where he's murdered small units all on his own and others where he's done squat. And with Rending he's an actual threat to things with an AV or even good armor saves. Obviously you don't want him toe to toe with an equipped IC or Dreadnought, but other than that he holds his own quite well. The only time I can't see bringing him is if you have a pure jump force with no transport capacity in any of your vehicles.

The re-roll has mostly been defensive. Saving myself from Perils of the Warp or failed invulnerable saves on Dante or other horribly botched die rolls. But in one game I used it to re-roll the damage done by an HKM that slammed thru the side of a loaded Rhino. Went from a 1 to a 6. His best re-roll was on a Skies of Blood test for a Blood Talon DCF. Instead of getting squished the Dreadnought was dropped behind a building and on the next turn charged and butchered a big Lootas mob. Marvelously cinematic and gory.

So for my money he's amazing.

I don't know. I'm getting great results out of a jump pack sang priest. If he came with a jump pack...YES! I would take him every game. But for my JP army he'll do little but the one re-roll.

I'm not suggesting it's an either or type of thing. If you have transported units spend the points and convert one of the SPs into Corbulo. But I always have at least one jump SP in my army because otherwise there is no support for Dante and the RAS to which he's attached.

After all with 3 to a slot it never actually hurts us to bring multiple Priests does it?

It's unfortunate that I originally worked up a list with him inside a pod with 9 sternguard. As much as I need more sang priests I can't afford the

points. So it's only 1 priest for now in my 2500pt army.

But I'm glad to hear he is working for some.
