Mercury's Blood Angels

No offence taken.

To be honest I sometimes look at the effect people obtain using almost no effort with Army Painter and wonder why I spend so much time on my models! Then I remember that it's all about the joy of painting for me, I'm really not that much of a gamer though I like to play occasionally.

@WingsOfTheFalcon:

The power weapons are painted as follows:

Basecoat Codex Grey

Wash with Badab Black

1st highlight = 1:1 Codex Grey:Fortress Grey

2nd highlight = Fortress Grey

3rd highlight = 1:1 Fortress Grey:Skull White

Final (edge) highlight = Skull White

Glaze = 1:4:1 (approx) Formula P3 Turquoise Ink:Water:Formula P3 Mixing Medium

@Mr.Malevolent:

You might want to hold off. I am currently painting some Flesh Tearers and TBH, they are much easier to obtain a clean with as Red Gore covers far better than Blood Red! Maybe when I post images of them you will be inspired to paint a Flesh Tearers company. For Amit!

@WingsOfTheFalcon:

Good job! It makes me feel disconcertingly good that I am inspiring others with my paint schemes. I think that I will do something very similar for my Flesh Tearers power weapons, though possibly using a purple ink glaze. I like the idea of purple against the black weapon housings and shoulder pads, but am worried that it might be too similar in tone to the deep red of the armour. Guess I'll have to try it and see how it goes!

Mate, with your painting skills I wouldn't be suprised at all that you inspire others to improve. Any advice on how I can make the greaves pop a bit more on that mini? I can't paint red PA for my life! :rolleyes:

Hey,

I've based with Mechrite red, then hardlined blood red on the raised edges and glazed blood red in layers up to the edges to try and put a diffuse blend in the red. Only problem is it doesn't really pop! I'm going for a deeper red, similar to Flesh Tearers.

I find that the trick to achieving a deep red that 'pops' is not to use Blood Red as a highlight! I know that it is easy to do, especially as Blood Red is the next lightest red in the GW spectrum, but it really isn't the way to go. Mechrite Red/Scab Red/Red Gore are such deep reds that they are actually quite close to being pinks/purples. Therefore your highlighting method need to be different. If you look at the Gabriel Seth and Flesh Tearer models in the BA Codex (pages 66 and 80), you will see that their lightest highlights are more of a pink colour than a red (almost a flesh colour, in fact). I am trying to achieve a similar effect with my Flesh Tearers.

For my Flesh Tearers I am spraying them Mechrite Red, then shading by 'blacklining' a 4:1 mix of Chaos Black:Regal Blue into the model's recesses. I then enrich the red (and cover up any blacklining mistakes!) by applying a general highlight of Red Gore.

I then apply two edge highlights, the first of approx 2:1 Red Gore:Bleached Bone. Then I add more Bleached Bone to the mix for the second highlight.

I won't lie to you, the Red Gore:Bleached Bone mix looks a really s%!tty pink colour on the pallette, and when you first apply it to the model - it's just one of those colours you don't really appreciate until a significant portion of the model is done.

Here is a quick WIP pic to give you some idea of what I mean:

I also tried a similar technique using Fortress Grey in the highlight mix instead of Bleached Bone. Both look good, but I personally preferred the warmth of the Bleached Bone. Elf Flesh might also be a good alternative, but I have never tried it.

Everything looks nice, but when I was looking at the termis british voices suddenly started talking in my head.

Sorry guys, I kinda burned them when I was heating the water for the tea.

I am truly sorry, and I apologize, but it wasn't my fault. It was the voices, the voices I tell you.
