Night Lords - Scouring Era

Paradigm

Recommended Posts

I'm in the process of building my pre-heresyesque Night lords. I'm going for a slightly less chaotic feel for them, with inspiration drawn from their pre-heresy incarnation. Doghouse's truescale night lords lended the color scheme to some extent. They are designed to be playable as a C:CSM force. Hopefully this is the first of many posts.

This is my test mini, there are no terror markings(on this one). Lightning is minimized.

My night lords will not be sulking in the shadows. They will be beasts to shock and breed despair.

Let the Alpha Legion infiltrate, the Night Lords are here to chill the bones of their adversaries, to char the earth and maim the bodies of the enemy. They leave no quarter, this is total war.

(All this and they're not even really chaos marines yet!)

I did leave a mold line on the right lower leg... Other than that, I still need to finish up the basing and maybe add a highlight to the helmet.

Also, c&c most definitely welcome.

You're off to a great start with this colour scheme and your test mini does look good. I would suggest adding some shading to the metallic areas though as just now some of the details are lost and they look a little flat. Perhaps deepen the shading in the recesses on the red wings on the shoulder pad as well. This isn't criticism, just a couple of things that I think will make this great mini even better

i've got to agree with Captain Mick.

the model looks a bit flat. i think more lightning and maybe more highlights might fix that.

i know it's probably just because it's a test model, but i would use different legs (backpack and bolt pistol too), because the ones you used here are all adorned by the arrow symbol, which looks too chaotic to me.

otherwise good work :o

looking forward to see more of them!

Thanks for the critique, I really appreciate it!

The lightning will be remaining minimal, but I may add highlights. I kind of want it to look quite dark though. The helmet will get highlights for sure.

Any suggestions on the metallic areas? I know how to shade metals pretty well, but I lack highlighting skill on metallic areas.

As far as the chaos emblem goes, I'm avoiding icons, and the eight point star, but I feel like the downward arrow isn't too big a deal as many chapters use arrow variants for their tactical squads anyway. Since I'm not really going for any timeframe per-say, though if there was one, it would be after they went rogue, but before the heresy broke out.

Pics of the next marine mini soon. I'm sort of slow so this will be a longer project.

Small update, getting married is getting in the way of my army :/

Two more mostly done. They need a little touching up, and a few highlights. I think I'll change the terror marking slightly to make the white roll a little less deep; he also needs his lightning.

Any tips on making the army look like they are fighting at night? I tried using minimal highlights, and pulling details with lowlighting, but it doesn't work as well as Id like. I've painted the eyes as pinpricks of light to help this plan out; I am going to go fairly monochromatic on the bases as well.

Give a marine a board with: Sssh...dont make to much noise the kids are sleeping as this hour of the day. Ok lets stop the jokes :) . The idea of giving hardly any highlights because they fight at night isnt the best solution i think, the moon gives light and so does street lights(last 1 only at city fights ofcourse). When not using highlights and minimum off lightning strikes on the models give the models a very flat look which isnt needed and it isnt at night either :P .

So I've decided to add some subtle highlighting on my models.

In the mean time, here is what I have been working on.

Chaos Dreadnought that can be played as a BA dread.

I'm going to add a five skulls to his ccw arm as trophies.

Any idea on how to take out that gap on the sarcophagus?

An alternate to that I could use a standard dread sarcophagus and deface it?

One deployment later, and time to paint combine for a few more wip models. Still need some minor high-lights. I have yet to varnish anything at all though, so I'm still a ways away.

Here is were I am on the dread, changed the front, Just didn't like it. However now he has some awesome trophies, and a rad new sarcophagus/face. I am trying to figure out where to add a defaced sanguinary guard deathmask, and a whole bunch of chain.

Not even close to done...

Here is some close ups of the two csm and the raptor/assault csm. Anybody else think we should get normal CSM assault squads and then raptors as more of a vanguard vet sort of creature? I'd like to see raptors with hit and run and more options and a streamlined, cheaper, normal csm with a jump pack.

Having a little uploading problem for a couple better ones of the raptor.

The blue seems lighter and doesn't blend with the black as much in the photos that it does in person. So you may or may not be noticing some of my highlighting on the marines.

Cool another Nl player, well first of all they look good and the CSM share the same base colour as my NL's (see link)

As to how to make them see like they're fighting at night, well my NL fight below a blue moon, so each model has been washed with Asurman Blue although it isn't easy to see it in each picture it creates a good effect
