That did the trick, I think. Nice work.

That tactical squad head on the far left of the above picture.... where did it come from?

It's from the tactical squad set, if I'm not mistaken. The newer ones. It's smaller (and in better scale) than the similar head that you used to get, with the ventilation holes on its faceplate thing.

I have a really random question to ask,

That tactical squad head on the far left of the above picture.... where did it come from? I've got a HUGE assortment of bitz and I'm a keen person for un-helmeted heads, but I can't say I remember that one (Or maybe I need to look more carefully at my sprues?)

Also, I know it's already painted, but I liked the white roof doors with the red Arrow, as the other side doors are white.... so... It just keeps it together, but as I say, too late lol!

This head is indeed from the Tactical Squad sprue. It may have been updated at some point. I'm not too keen on it, personally. I think the proportions of the mask are a bit off compared to this head, which I vastly prefer:

I decided to keep the top hatch red, so the Rhino matches with the Tactical marines. White side doors match the shoulder pads, see. Just like on the Land Speeder, there are two white panels on the sides of the nose. On any Rhinos carrying Veterans however (Sternguard, Command Squad) the top hatch will be white, to match their white helmets.

Loving the updates, the tac squad are coming on nicely. It is good to see different armour marks in a squad. :D

The purity seals look nice, gives the vehicle more visual appeal, don't need to add anything else though! :)

Can I just ask, the Army Painter primer that you're using, is it 'Pure' or 'Dragon' red?

Also, the Rhino looks excellent, not too over done. I also really like the way your tactical squad is shaping up as well :D

Thanks

James

again -- i really great job. but the vehicles definitely seem to be missing something, they appear both plain and a bit flat.

concerning the flat issue, would recommend a bit stronger highlights. now that I look, I would do so on the infantry, as well. more pronounced highlights would really add a sense of depth, lessening the 'flat' appearance. In the case of the vehicles, maybe even more shadowing is needed in the recesses and between armor joints, etc.

also, the vehicles could use other items to break up their appearance, the purity seals helped but not much. Maybe aquillas, as was suggested, or oaths, battle damage, insignias, or whatever. Definately painting the bolts and metal structures around the viewing ports would be a good idea.

again, really great job, just a few constructive words :)

Pure Red. Dragon Red is a little darker, more like Scab Red.

Thanks, constructive criticism is just what I'm after - this log is as much about showcasing my models as it is about improving my painting. I've bought a dark, fleshy colour (P3 Khardic Flesh) for extreme edge highlights on the red armour, but think it looks a little over the top. When I get time I'll knock up a test model and provide a direct comparison.

I'll look at painting the metal structure, but I like the minimalistic look on vehicles. I think squad, company and chapter insignia with a couple of purity seals is enough - any more would start to overcomplicate and clutter the vehicle in my opinion. Battle damage is a good suggestion, which I may revisit after a larger chunk of the army is done.

Overall, I suppose the look I'm trying to achieve is one of "on our way to war" rather than "post-war". But again, thanks for your very valid suggestions.

I personally i think that is the best way to represent the marines, in their full glory before they are up to their ankles in it. :P

Right, so the Tactical Squad is now finished and we move on to basing. I'm going to do them in a dirty, desert brown with dead grass and rocks.

Here we have: GW Iyanden Darksun, GW Skull White, GW Bleached Bone and GW Gryphonne Sepia. Also present is some leaf litter from Antenociti's Workshop and Army Painter grass tufts (Highland, 6mm).

1. First I glue the sand and cork rocks on to the bases with PVA (white) glue. When set, I gently part the model from it's base. I used very small amounts of superglue to attach them, so they come off easily. Painting the base suddenly got a whole lot easier.

2. Paint in stages. Undercoat with white spray. First a Darksun basecoat. Rocks are painted in Graveyard Earth. The entire base is drybrushed with Bleached Bone and then again very lightly with White.

3. Gryphonne Sepia over the whole base. Literally coat it.

4. When dry, drybrush with Bleached Bone. I then use superglue to attach the grass tufts and leaf litter.

I can't decide whether to use a Graveyard Earth (left) or Scorched Brown (right) rim colour. What do you think?

Id say you have a awesome and very nice army in the making and very well painted!! :D though id go for the brown rim as it bring more focus to the model and details that blens away some with the paler rim on the base..

Big salute on sweet as* Orar models in very nice red colours! Big thumb up for you mate!

This army is so kick-ass! I have to ask though: how do you do that white???

Also, what is that ridge around the base edges?

All the parts painted white were actually undercoated white, separate from the rest of the model, then glued on afterwards. The white is simply shaded with watered-down Fortress Grey and a small amount of watered-down Vallejo Ghost Grey.

The bases are magnetic. The little ridge around the lip is where the normal and magnetised rubber meet. It's very hard to scrape or file off, due to the base being rubber! At some point after the army is finished, I am planning on doing a magnetised display board for them. It has been suggested that I apply milliput around the lip and file that down, which I may do.

Thanks for that tip on the white. I'm about to use that on my storm shield now.

You sir, are genius. The marines look great, and I think that milliput around the edge would look great, as long as they all are uniform. <_<

Thanks for the tip, and the wonderful pictures of a hot army.

You sir Ravendove have an awsom incarnated army there!

As said before clean, crisp and flawless use of red. But I would also like to point to the white & fleshtones.

I like the bases you've made, going the distance with extra efford (and magnetic too)! IMO I'd go for the Graveyard Earth on the rim.

I'll be looking out for more of you'r Sons.

Cheers,

Vandael

The bases are very well done. Not foten that you see a Nevada-style desert with scrub and plants in it, most people go for a rocky Sahara look. I like this style, it suits the army. If I didn't already have an idea for my Sons' bases, I'd use this, but they still look great.

I would go with the Graveyard Earth for the base rims personally. :D

Update

Thanks for the positive feedback everyone, it's much appreciated. I'm going with the graveyard earth for the base rims, as the darker brown looks a little overpowering I think. This weekend I am packing up and next week I'm moving from South England to France! So as of today however, this project is temporarily on hold until I get settled in and unpack all my stuff.

But before I leave, I wanted to share with you two very exciting packages that arrived in the post this morning... :P

Dice were custom laser engraved and provided for a good price by the lovely folks at Dice & Games LTD. (http://www.dice.co.uk)

28mm scale plastic Cacti are by Pegasus Hobbies. You get 60 x in a box and they're very nicely detailed. (http://www.pegasushobbies.com/)

More updates in a couple of weeks! :)

I've always had a soft spot for the Sons of Orar, and this army is simply amazing.

Keep up the great work! Maybe a bit more beakies & heresy era studs, but perfect as is.

I especially dig the bases, they're superb.

That's exactly why I love this blog: not only because of the well-painted miniatures, but also because this guy loves his army.

He love it so much he even bought them custom dice.

Two thumbs up!
