Hello again!

So at last I'm at a point where I've been able to unpack all my stuff. Sorry it's been such a long wait. Our flat is very small so in order to keep things smooth, my hobby time is when my girlfriend is at work. You guys with partners out there, I'm sure you understand. I've been spending a bit of time deciding on army list composition and wanted to share some thoughts with you. I would love suggestions and tips, if you have any.

Sicarius is a wonderful model and I'm determined to use him; either as a Captain w/ Relic Blade and stuff or as Sicarius himself. I've also decided on an army 'core' I want to keep. I also have all the following bits already purchased and waiting to be assembled/painted. This 'core' makes up 1000pts exactly:

Sicarius @ 200

Tactical Squad A (Combi-Melta, Meltagun, Missile Launcher) in Rhino @ 220
Tactical Squad B (Combi-Melta, Meltagun, Lascannon) in Rhino @ 230

2 x Land Speeders (Heavy Bolter, Typhoon Missile Launcher) @ 180
2 x Predators (Autocannon, Heavy Bolters) @ 170

The idea is to have a flexible, well-rounded force that ticks all the boxes. I've got mechanised troops that can combat squad for objectives, long range firepower to take down transports, anti-infantry firepower at long ranges and Melta for any AV14. Sicarius is there to plug any gaps, being quite decent at CC, character killing and field control depending on situation (S10 Lascannon, Infiltrating Meltas, etc). That said, a Librarian is sorely missed.

For small games, this will be fine. But I mainly play 1500 or 1750, so I would ideally like another 500pt 'chunk' to add on - but I'm stuck on what to add. A couple of mounted Sternguard Squads? Land Raider with Terminators? Two (or three?) Ironclads? What is the army missing? Suggestions?

nice list! personally id try and take some more antitank but thats just me...;)

maybe get some sternguard and a dread in a pod? cant wait to see this lot painted up!

maybe take a librarian instead of sicarius? saves you some points (lascannon preds? vindicators? i like long range anti tank..)

I like the list as a core, but i'm not sure where Sicarus would go. Maybe make the Rhino for the Tact Squad with lascannon into a razorback? Put Sicarus with a combat squad in the razorback and leave the lascannon behind (you would have to drop the combi melta out for something like Meltabombs though)?

Great looking army, looking forward to seeing more. Thanks for sharing dice.uk i might get a set for my ultramarines as the current set of dice only seems to stop on 4+ (lots of dead smerfs). ;)

Are you going to include a squad of termies as shields and halberds would look sweet.

Update

See, didn't I warn you this blog would be slow? A couple of months ago, the only FLGS in the area closed down, so my hobby enthusiasm disappeared altogether for a while. However, with Christmas done and dusted, I'm back and in business with some new toys to play with. I was planning to buy the Citadel Painting Station in order to keep mess to a minimum (and the cleaning beast at bay), but I spotted this beauty instead in the shop today:

Done. I suppose this is where I would show a picture of my pet too, but I don't have one. Instead, here's a picture of my girlfriend, suitably impressed with the mountain of plastic I purchased and just 'had' to bring with me:

Yup, that's two Predators, one Razorback, one Land Speeder and a Venerable Dreadnought. I'll be starting with the Dread, because I've never made one before. Updates on the build will follow tomorrow.

cant wait to see more of your army! :)

(slightly off topic-thats a nice list...mind if i use it?)

Er, of course, go right ahead.

what recipe do you use for your skin / faces?

Good question, I can't quite remember. I'm pretty sure it's:

1. White undercoat

2. Tallarn Flesh basecoat

3. Ogryn Flesh wash

4. Tallarn Flesh, leaving recesses

5. Highlights with 50/50 Tallarn/Elf Flesh

6. Final highlights with Elf Flesh

very nice...any more stuff done? :)

Check back tomorrow!

So like all models in this army, after assembling the main components, I separate the pieces depending on the undercoat required. I primarily do this because I'm lazy, secondly because white areas just look better with a white undercoat rather than layer after layer of grey. Here we have the red, black and white piles respectively. Legs, torso base and weapons are in black; arm shoulder plates, knee guard and head are white; everything else is in red.

You can see some FW Brassed Etch icons on some of the white pieces (Orar symbol traditionally sits red-on-white) and this replicates the style of the infantry shoulder pads and Rhino doors. Other iconography and details such as scrolls and purity seals gets added last.

Again, like the infantry, I paint the head separately mounted on a cork. It's just easier.

Dreadnought Update

So the Dreadnought is basically done. If you haven't built a Venerable Dreadnought before, the way they did the weapons is very clever. You choose your 'shoulder' style (choice of three), then the different weapons just slot into it and stay there. So I've painted up an Assault Cannon for now, until I get my hands on some spare Autocannons and build my own weapon arm to 'plug in'.

I've still got detailing to do. That is; decals, purity seals, scroll text, liquid resin ("water effects") for the lenses and gems, and so on. Anyway, picture time:

I'm not quite sure what to put on the weapon shoulder plate. On a Tactical Marine, that's where the Tactical Arrow would go, but there's no suitable red decal available. Here's the base the big guy will be standing on. Standard Dreadnought base with some sand and plastic Cacti from Pegasus Hobbies. I'm going to Amsterdam for a couple of days, so we'll tackle that bad boy when I get back.

If anyone has links available to nice looking desert bases, with colours used, that would be awesome. I decided to re-base the Tactical Squad because I'm unhappy with the look of the magnetic bases. Yes internet, you were right. 'Desert' is a tricky style to get right - it's easy to make it look too yellow or too brown. Cheerio.

Are you going to do anything inside the arches on the front torso plates?

No, probably not. My free-hand isn't that great (hence the use of decals and brass etch). I'm adding a couple of light washes of Devlan Mud inside the arches though, to darken them a little and break up the large red blocks some.

Dreadnought Done!

For additional details, I have added a red Crux Terminatus symbol to his right shoulder plate, two purity seals and a large IV decal on the top armour. It should be obvious, but if it's not, yes I am putting together a 4th Company force. I've placed him on the base too, so you can see how he stands. I call this the "come get some" pose.

It looks very nice! Has clean lines and colors; good use of the Ultramarines brass too. Heh, "Come get some!"

However...

You drilled out the heavy flamer barrel but not the assault cannon barrels? Also, the plants could use the same shade your purity seal has, as right now they look a bit too neon (unless you wanted the alien plant look).

Good spot on the barrels, it completely slipped my mind. I should also point out that the base is unpainted...

I liked the colour of your bases, the magnet thing wasnt that nice.
