Oh, haha! I didn't even notice the base was unpainted...

For deserts, what you can do is go natural (for the sanded portions). For instance, just take a tan or light brown wash to the sand on the base and there you go, sand colored...sand.

  • 3 weeks later...

Why, yes - it's an update!

Hello folks. So there's been a lot of stuff going on since the last update. I've just got back home from a two-week stay back in the UK having my teeth fixed, after faceplanting the pavement while on my holiday. Upon returning home, my girlfriend introduced me to the newest member of our family! I would like you to meet Erik.

Erik is doing very well, with a healthy glow to his leaves. He has been dutifully looked after by a Raven Guard Scout, and cannot wait to be featured as terrain in future games.

So where were we? Ah yes, basing. I have decided to re-base the army with normal plastic bases (those magnetic ones have ugly strips on the outside) and took the opportunity to refine the desert painting a little. Here's the outcome of the test base:

Bestial Brown basecoat (and rim), Bubonic Brown top coat, 50/50 Bubonic and Bleached Bone drybrush, final edge highlights in Bleached Bone on the rocks. Cactus is done in Dark Angels Green, Snot Green, Rotting Flesh drybrush and Thraka Green wash. Simple really, but looks nice and the yellow/green will contrast well with the red armour.

I've started work on the Dreadnought Base and when it's done, I'll post the step-by-step. I've also assembled and undercoated one of the two Predators:

... and finally, what's this! A Librarian has joined the party!

*sigh* Several minutes reading this entire thread. Now I'm a fan <_<

Let's talk "dirt". I'm planning on an army that is already in it knee deep. I noticed the Rhino has used the dirt road from the factory to the waiting depot.

What colors did you use for the dirt?

Woohoo my favourite thread is alive, ALIVE!!!

Great to see you painting again, sorry to hear about your faceplant on holiday - at least you got your teeth sorted so you won't have to gum your food like an oldie! Erik looks pretty decent as well!

Your dread is looking great, pretty decent idea to undercoat the different parts seperately, i wouldn't call it lazy, but rather pretty clever as it cuts down on time. Very much looking forward to seeing the Razorback but especially the Librarian, it is one of my fav FW models. <_<

No colours, per se. I used Tamiya weathering products. Two 'Weathering Sticks' - Light Earth, Mud - and a master palette with Snow/Rust/Soot. The sticks have the consistency of Lipstick, so you can play about with it in various ways. I'll make sure to take pictures next time I weather a tank, but here's how I did the Rhino:

1. I broke off a piece of the Light Earth stick (a kind of greyish brown) and used a large drybrush to faintly add it around the track guards in streaks. This is the old, dried mud that flicked off the tracks and caked in the heat.

2. I then mixed a little GW Water Effects with the Light Earth lump to get a thick muddy consistency, which I dabbed on around the previously drybrushed bits. This is mud that was recently unearthed.

3. Finally, I got the Mud stick and literally drew it on the tracks, creating a thick messy consistency. This is mud that was just driven through. When you varnish the model, make sure to pay attention to these parts, or they'll flake off when you're playing/leave mud marks on your dining table. I coated mine with watered down PVA for good measure.

Stuff like Soot, just grab a cotton bud and smear it on around engine vents etc or drybrush it on. Again, make sure to seal it.

On infantry models, where weathering is not only a little less noticeable but also less frequent (they don't go churning up huge layers of mud like tanks do), I'm probably just going to drybrush around the feet with some varied browns.

I think Sevrin Loth is the best Librarian model available, full stop. I can't wait to get started on him.

1. Black undercoat

2. Bestial Brown

3. Snakebite Leather + Bubonic Brown

4. Bubonic Brown/Bleached Bone (50/50)

5. Bleached Bone

Then I add stuff like grass tufts (Siflor and Army Painter do great ones) and paint the Cacti, skulls, etc. See it in action!

One of the best Armies I've seen, Very well done! ;)

I need more to drool over. What's next?

Thanks! Next up is the Predator. Chaplain Belisarius, I'll get a group shot done once it's finished, as I'll then have half the army done: Tactical Squad, Rhino, Typhoon, Predator and Dreadnought. After that? I'll probably tackle the second Tactical Squad and reward myself with the Librarian.

awesome dread!

sorry if it was asked before, but where did you get the cactus thingies?

Thank you. They are by a company called Pegasus Hobbies (see here), and come in two boxes - Large and Small. Several online hobby shops and various third party wargaming retails stock them, so check around.

Tank Weathering

I've had some questions about how I weather my vehicles, so here's a step by step as I do the Predator. Before picture:

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4122/5412637545_88ecd30d9a_z.jpg

Here is everything I use, plus some GW Water Effects - but you could easily substitute this with PVA/white glue. I use Bubonic Brown because that is the colour of the sand on my bases.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4119/5412638281_90e43f73ff_z.jpg

Right, here we go. Grab the cotton bud and get some 'Soot' on it. Dab and smear this around engine vents, exhausts, etc. Fairly straightforward.

http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5133/5413248100_300cdf63f1_z.jpg

http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5256/5413248776_434229b86a_z.jpg

http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5173/5412641017_d1214ed883_z.jpg

Grab the large drybrush and lightly apply the base colour (in this case, Bubonic Brown) all around the tracks and track guards. The idea is to slightly lighten the area, showing the large volumes of dust that gets kicked up as the vehicle moves over terrain.

http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5219/5412641591_b1afdaa839_z.jpg

This is the fun bit. Break off a pieces of the 'Light Earth' stick and mix in some Water Effects/PVA to form a thick, wet paste that dries hard. Smear it all over the edges of the track guards, leaving some of the previous step showing. Concentrate on the edges, where dried mud would form.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4146/5413253160_5ae308c76b_z.jpg

Now I grab the 'Mud' stick and apply it straight on to the tracks to get caked-on fresh mud.

That's it! :cuss

Doesn't look as if he needs to, Tamiya weathering products look excellent. I'll need to try this method for myself. The fact that the weathering powders from Tamiya use a much finer pigment seems to mean more control over the pigment itself. Excellent work, Ravendove.
very nice - always good to see step-by-step weathering. do you use the FW powders at all?

Nope, I've never used weathering powder. I would like to try them out, but haven't really had a reason to yet - the Tamiya products have taken care of my needs so far.

Group shot

Here are some pictures of everything painted up so far. Excuse the brightness of the photos, the sun is giving it 100% today. Stuff still left to do: re-base the Land Speeder properly (need to order myself a 60mm base), re-base the Tactical Squad and add some detailing (stowage, purity seals) to the Predator as it's looking a little flat with all those large, red areas. Careful observes will notice I finally drilled out the Dreadnought's Assault Cannon.

No, I haven't added Shoulder Pad iconography yet.

Next up will be Tactical Squad II.

I only ask because I have some MiG and some Tamiya powders as well as the FW ones, and I find that a bit of blending of the three can create some really nice effects. I am in awe of your red and white sir, it looks stunning! a very nice force in that group shot ;)
