Librarian finished

So the Librarian is complete and ready to have a rest with a good book and a cuppa. But first, he wanted to pose for some pictures.

Here he is, fearlessly leading the men in battle by the fruit bowl.

So, will just quickly go over the rest of the painting. Most of it has already been covered on previous models. Cloth and scrolls were done by building up from Graveyard Earth to Kommando Khaki, to Bleached Bone and finally to very thin Skull White edge highlights. Bone with Bestial Brown > Snakebite > Bleached > Skull White. Simple stuff really. The only part where I got a little fancy was the glow effects on the Force Weapon, Hand and Eyes. There's a little bit of OSL on the force weapon shaft as well. Overall, I think it turned out quite well - first time I've tried any 'glow effects'. Definitely some room for improvement on the axe though.

Criticism very welcome as I'm still trying to improve my painting, especially with these advanced techniques coming into play now. Let me know what you think!

Looking fantastic!!!!! Your SL model is awesome, love the way you have done the shades of green on him, very effective. Whats next on the list?

Thanks! Next up is a Rhino for the second Tactical Squad. After that, another Predator and Land Speeder Typhoon. At which point I will have 2 of each vehicle, 2 Tactical Squads, 1 Dreadnought and 1 Librarian - 1000 points exactly.

Yet another masterpiece! Kudos. How did you acheive that OSL on the palm, I'm aimins for something similar on my libby.

Well, to be honest, it's fairly straightforward and I pretty much made it up as I went along. I picked a source for the light (in this case, the fingertips) and painted them Scorpion Green. Then I slowly mixed in more and more blue and painted 'away' from that area. So the rest of the palm, the other (closed) fingers, the top of the hand. You have to imagine where the light would go and where there would be shadow. Then in the brightest areas (right on the tips) I highlighted up to Skull White.

If I get a chance, I'll knock up a little example arm and do step-by-step.

fantastic! i dont think you could improve them at all...they look amazing!

Thank you, but I'm sure you must be able to think of something. I'm doing this blog for critique as much as anything else. Areas I think I might want to re-visit are some script on the book and purity seal, colouring the 'sun' motif on the tabard and perhaps adding some green glow to the runes on his leg plates. But those will wait until I refine my brushstrokes a little bit.

I don't get it. It takes me a month to paint a independent figure (and that's if I don't get too distracted) and yet it takes you a week? :wallbash:

Very nice work, as always, but why did you leave the eagle on the helmet white? :)

I have a lot of free time! I'm a freelance web developer, so my workload is incredibly varied, hence the sometimes sporadic and sometimes frequent updates in this log, hehe. I left the helmet decoration white because I just think it looks better. I would have done it red, but I think it detracts too much from the rest of the detail on the helmet. I've got a Sergeant in one of the Tactical Squads with a similar helmet which I painted red, and I'm going to paint over it with white because I think it looks naff.

Rhino Update

So the next one on the list is the Rhino for the second Tactical Squad. Like the last one, I started by painting the interior pre-assembly. I've gone through how I paint the interior before, but thought this might be a good place to do a step-by-step on how I paint my screens, gems, eyes, etc. Same technique for them all. Here we go.

First I cover the screens in the base colour; Dark Angels Green for the green ones and Mechrite Red for the red ones.

Then with a lighter colour (Snot Green and Blood Red) I do a sort of curved crescent over them, with the most paint in the top right. Imagine there's a lightbulb hovering in that corner of the roof.

Grab a lighter colour again (Scorpion Green and White/Blood Red mixed) and do the same thing, except this time make it smaller. Cover less area than previously, but keep it near the top/right edges.

Finally, grab Skull White and do a very fine angle in the top/right corner.

Looks good! But it doesn't look like a reflective glass screen. To do that, we need a small dab of Skull White in the opposite (here; bottom/left) corner.

I finish up by using Scorpion Green to add some details on the screens before grabbing some Water Effects (Gloss Varnish would work) and paint it over the screens to get a shiny finish.

So that's basically it. It's pretty easy to do, doesn't require any blending and is rather quick - but looks great when glancing at it from above the tabletop. After the interior is finished, I assemble the rest of the Rhino. When done, you shouldn't be able to see inside the interior at all. This is a good thing, because we'll be spraying it red next!

Rhino Update

I decided to have a little dude manning the Storm Bolter this time around. Here he is, ready to be painted.

And here he is, painted and having sneaked into another vehicle.

You might notice his head is the previous helmet-less Tactical Squad marine who was stealing the show. Here's some more pictures of the finished Rhino. Still needs the Orar iconography and some purity seals, but that's it.

Right then. So what's next? Well, what do people want to see next? In the pipeline I've got a Mk3 Command Squad, Predator, Land Speeder, Scout Squad and a Captain (Sicarius). What do you think?

Scouts are getting a lot of love, huh? Before we start on them, I wanted to finish a couple of 60mm bases for the Land Speeders to go on. I'm using a technique a friend of mine suggested, so I'll just explain how I'm doing it as I go.

First, we get some Milliput. I suppose Green Stuff or similar alternatives would do fine. Grab decent chunks and roll them together, before flatting the ball between two large bases. You could also use smaller 25mm bases with the recesses underneath, but the 60mm has plug 'holes' underneath so that wasn't possible here. Squeeze them together hard so you get a flat pancake of putty. Leave to dry.

3 Hours later, take them apart and you should have a hard, flat piece of putty. You can now chop this up, file it, and generally beat it up a little to make some great rocks, concrete, pavement or whatever.

Here's the final bases before the last coat of fine sand:
