Sons of Orar blog

Bases finished and I've also just started on a Drop Pod. It was sitting there half-assembled just looking at me, so I took pity on the thing and basecoated it. If I get around to adding some Sternguard at any point, this will be their ride.

I had already undercoated the Drop Pod black pre-assembly, and left the top/bottom halves unglued when spraying it red. This is so the interior is much, much easier to paint. Having a black undercoat underneath the red also gives it some preliminary shading in the recesses around the bottom half, which is perfect as this area will get burned up the most upon atmospheric entry.

Great Models! I have liked the Sons of Orar since I saw their Champion in the back of the 4th edition marine codex, but I can't paint red to save my life.

Keep up the excellent work

Thanks for the blog, very inspirational. Nice to see an army developing and evolving over time.

Specifically thanks for the drop pod shot. I am building a FW resin dread one and a normal plastic one atm and seeing how you didn't glue yours together to facilitate painting has been most helpful. It answered a question I hadn't even gotten round to asking myself yet :P

Land Speeder update

The second Land Speeder is finished. It's one of the newer kits (with re-cut sprues) and it was a lot nicer to put together, considering I didn't have to use rubber bands or green stuff at all. I've also painted it a little differently, as the previous Land Speeder was the first SoO vehicle I painted and have since refined my technique a little bit. I will either go back and re-do parts of the old one, or quite simply just buy another Land Speeder to build.

I've still got to add a couple of decals and the Orar symbol of course, but the painting is all done.

What do you think? It'd be nice to know which style people prefer more - black or red on the bumper? Gunmetal or black on the engines?

Anyway, let's do a quick recap of what has been built/painted and what is still to go.

Base 1000-point army

Librarian Done!

Dreadnought Done!

Tactical Squad with Rhino Done!

Tactical Squad with Rhino Done!

Land Speeder Done!

Predator Done!

Predator Not done

Other shiny toys

Drop Pod Not done

Drop Pod Started

Scout Squad Started

Command Squad Not done

I also have a Battleforce on the way, which combined with my bits box, will allow me to build a further 30 Marines in pretty much any configuration. But I figured I want at least 10 Sternguard (get a Drop Pod) and 10 Tactical + Rhino. After that, I might pick up a 2nd Dreadnought to run them as a pair like I've done every other vehicle. That should take me up to around 1750.

So in that spirit, the next model up will be the 2nd Predator, giving me a fully painted 1000pt army. In 13 years of doing this hobby, that will only be my second fully painted army, believe it or not. I'd offer to post pictures of the other one, but it's not power armour. Any guesses? B)

So it was suggested to me by SCC (you know, with the stunning Raven Guard) that the banding on Sevrin Loth's leg might be parchment instead of part of the armour. After deliberating on it for a while, I decided to paint it up and see how it turned out. I think it looks a lot better to be honest, but I'm interested to hear what you all think.

the loth model is looking very nice, my thought is that he could do with a little more red on him.. not sure where though as youve pretty much finished the model.

other than that id suggest painting his metal garter thing metal rather than the same colour as the armour (just above the material you've just redone) as to me it looks as though you've forgotten it by leaving it blue.

Black bumper definitely, I like the idea of black engines but I think a proper dark metallic might be more appropriate. Something like Vallejo Air Color Metallic Black. It's very, very dark but also surprisingly reflective/metallic and might work well as an intermediate ground between metal and black.

And as I said elsewhere, the parchment adds a lovely bit of contrast to the Sevrin Loth model, the whole job is top-notch

Your vehicle building spree is also leaning me towards doing some of my RG army's vehicles now too, I've got 6 Rhino based vehicles still to do and I suspect leaving them for one big batch might be a mistake so maybe I should do a couple now using your lovely vehicles as inspiration...

Black yo. And yes, the parchment does add to the model. I was a little surprised the ... bands of ... spikes (?) around the leg and both wrists were not addressed either beyond the highlighting. On faith, I diod the same to my Loth, and it's actually not bad to leave them the same color as the armor.

Critique and praise, yes I did that. B)

Black bumper for the Land Speeder seems to have been the right choice, for sure.

Part of the problem, I suppose, is that with normal Librarians the left shoulder pad would be a solid colour reflecting the chapter. Dark Green for Dark Angels, Red for Blood Angels and so forth. However the Sons of Orar have white shoulder pads with a red symbol, which is what I've done. As it stands, I like the model with majority blue colours. It marks him as a Librarian and makes him really stand out on the tabletop.

I'm going to be honest - the garter struck me as part of the armour piece, just like the knee pads or engraved symbols on the shins. I can see what you're saying, but I'm going to leave this blue.

Thanks! I think at some point I will revisit the engines and mark a few areas out in dark metal, such as the turbine blades for example. However for the sake of actually getting things finished, I need to put them down and move on, otherwise I'll spend more time just fussing over tiny little details and never get the army done!

I'm glad you suggested doing the parchment, I agree - it looks a lot better.

Critique and praise, what more can I ask for? That's how we like it!

Predator Update!

So the second Predator tank is almost finished, just awaiting weathering and detailing (decals, purity seals et al). But first I want to get an opinion on this. When I did the first one there was a general consensus that there was not enough white on the model. Painting the sponson holders white seemed to do the trick, but I also mused about doing the turret cupolas in white too. Well, here they are.

There's also a side-by-side shot for comparison. Which do you think looks better?
