hamani
Hi guys. I've looked everywhere, here and on the wider web ... but can't find anywhere explaining a good way of making bolter straps for marines. Can anyone help me? Hemal
Best bet is to use strips of plasticard, you get an even finish and can soften it a bit to shape it using mild heat. Canis
This might sound weird but I've actually used rubber bands for "Guitar" straps before, really thin rubber bands. hamani
I presume you mean very thin plasticard? I've never considered that. I cant really see how I would get it into place well and hanging in a 'natural' manner of the model? Jakael
I just use notebook paper. cut it to the same width as the bolterand glue it to one end. Thread it through where you need it to go, trim to length and glue the remaining end(use superglue and a tweezers). Kinzel
Well I haven't tried it myself but I've seen a lot of 'regular' military models (as in not 40k ;p) use tinfoil (aluminium foil) for their weapon straps or webbing. Seems to work really well and stays in the shape you put it for the most part. Hemal
For making bolter straps, GS is a pain, I've tried it and it isn't great, I much prefer plasticard TBH Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/212178-bolter-straps/#findComment-2530234 Share on other sites
tahrikmili
I really can't think of something flexible enough while shaping then rigid enough while modelling except green stuff which is a pain to use for thin bits like bolter straps. I'm out of ideas.. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/212178-bolter-straps/#findComment-2530297 Share on other sites
WingsOfTheFalcon
I'd suggest Mag-Clamps in lieu of straps? :tu: Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/212178-bolter-straps/#findComment-2530403 Share on other sites
maverike_prime
if you want the strap to stay in place there is a trick I've used for other projects. a Strip of paper that is then painted with super glue. tahrikmili
How do you PAINT super glue? It dries SUPER fast.. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/212178-bolter-straps/#findComment-2530476 Share on other sites
Myxx
The GW thin superglue actually has a brush in it. Just dip and paint quick. You really don't need a lot, pretty much just the residue on the brush'll do the trick. Hemal
ANd it doesn't dry superfast in teh presence of oxygen - it works best in an anaerobic environment Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/212178-bolter-straps/#findComment-2531316 Share on other sites
ShinyRhino
Scale modellers often use old toothpaste tubes (not tinfoil) for things like this. Use up the toothpaste, then cut it open with a pair of scissors. Cut the tube into a rectangle by slitting open one side, then rinse very thorougly. You can then cut the material into strips, bend and shape as needed, and then prime/paint. The problem with tinfoil and paper is that they're very fragile. Great for display pieces, but one tumble down a piece of hill terrain, and your strap breaks, or bends and sheds paint. Thin plasticard is the most durable solution, though. Go to the hardware store and pick up a gargage sale sign for a dollar. You can make enough bolter starps to equip an entire company that way. The think card is flexible enough to bend to shape, but durable enough not to bend easily or break from a tumble. Hemal
Actually reminds me - the metal from around wine bottle corks etc is actually pretty good for this... maverike_prime
How do you PAINT super glue? It dries SUPER fast.. um.... you take a brush, drip a little super glue onto the bristles, and you... paint the glue onto the paper. I've done it dozens of times. Never had a problem with it drying 'SUPER fast'. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/212178-bolter-straps/#findComment-2531645 Share on other sites
Chapter Master Ignis Domus
I just take a thin strip of paper, look where it fits on the gun then glue the two side on after looping it over the shoulder.
