Young Wolf

Wolf Lord Faelan

Recommended Posts

I'm beginning a project of taking on Wolf Lord Ragnar Blackmane's entire great company, and I'm starting off by modeling the Lord himself, Ragnar. I've got a few questions...

About the Army:

Is there any real way to know how many Marines would be in Ragnar's great company specifically? Somehow i came up with about 500 in my mind.

How bout the number of armor, Dreds, and bikes versus the number of Wolf Guard, Grey Hunters, Blood Claws, and Long Fangs?

I understand that the secondary colors and such may vary between companies. Am I correct on this?

Fluff wise are there any other HQs in Ragnar's GC that would be a huge mistake to forget?

About Ragnar:

Im modeling him based on the Odin Knight model of Leman Russ. Any parts you can think of that would look cool on it? So far I'm replacing the shoulder pads, cause I hate the huge ones, and replacing the sword with Ragnar's. Also giving him a Top Knot.

Is he the same guy in the Space Wolf books?

Im sure ill end up with more later, but thanks for the help, and im getting started right away... Ill post pics as soon as possible!

In the 5th edition codex it states that Ragnar's Great Company is second only to the Great Wolfs, boasting almost 200 battle hardened warriors. There is a lot of debate on whether that 200 includes Blood Claws who may not be 'battle-hardened' or whether it doesn't. You decide.

Well, if you work out the mortality rates for Blood Claws. It's estimated roughly 50/60% of blood claws will die before they reach Grey Hunter, and then the Grey Hunters will then eventually widdle down to 50% of their strength, with those few left becoming Long Fangs or Lone Wolves.

As far as I'm aware, it doesn't state anywhere the exact number of Dreadnoughts, Bikes and other assets that Companies utilize. It's really up to you. But remember, Dreadnoughts as far as I'm aware, all belong under the direct command of the Great Wolf. They are allocated on his authority, just like the priesthood of the Wolves. Codex chapters tend to assign Dreadnoughts to specific battle companies, but in the Wolves, since some of which date back many thousands of years along with the oldest dreadnought in the Imperium. They are extremely revered.

Hope that helps.

Example: If I was doing Ragnars GC id probly go with....

Ragnar.

2-3 Rune priests.

2-3 Wolf Priests.

3-5 Iron Priests.

15-18 Wolf Scouts.

27 WG *including WGBLs*

3 Lone Wolves.

4 Dreadnaughts. *including 1-2 Vendreads*

12-145 Grey Hunters.

15-23 Long Fangs.

45-53 Bloodclaws.

This is of course not including DPs, Rhinos, etc. Why? Because Im pretty sure as a Wolf Lord the only vehicle hes truely limited on would be LandRaiders, of wich He probly has 6-7 split between the three varieties, with more phobos patterns than anything else. Rhinos, probly 1 per squad with 25% replacements, Drop Pods would be approximately 12 times the number needed to deploy all squads, with 1/10th that in Deathstorm pods. Razorbacks being slightly more limited, perhaps only 5 or 6 with optional weapon mounts- or 10-12 if theyre 'set' in their weapons. Predators- 3-6, maybe up to 8, slightly fewer vindicators, but about as many whirlwinds. Speeders could vary wildly, Id predict around 5, with 2-3 mothballed.

15-20 Thunderhawks, and of course his capital ship. Depending on the operation, he might have between two and six escort vessels of various types. Though SWs seem to stay mostly on their own ships, a primarily bondsmen crew with a pack of GHs or LFs on it would probly be the norm on these smaller vessels.

Sounds great. I've been playing Ragnar's Great Company for a long, long, time.

About the Army:

Is there any real way to know how many Marines would be in Ragnar's great company specifically? Somehow i came up with about 500 in my mind.

As others have stated, on page 17 of the new codex, it states that he has "almost 200 battle-hardened warriors" in his Great Company, which is second only to Logan Grimnar's. My personal belief is that encompasses everyone in his GC, but others argue that "battle-hardened" is supposed to be an important discriminator and say that this number must now include any Blood Claws. It is up to you to figure out which you think is correct, and use that as your target number.

How bout the number of armor, Dreds, and bikes versus the number of Wolf Guard, Grey Hunters, Blood Claws, and Long Fangs?

The fluff states that Grey Hunters will comprise the majority of any given Great Company. From there, the second largest group will probably be Blood Claws (they haven't gotten themselves killed yet), then Long Fangs, then Wolf Guard (in fluff they are the Wolf Lord's pack-mates). You'll probably have a handful of Lone Wolves, too, especially given the number of packs that would be in a GC of about 200 total Marines. Wolf Scouts are up to you, probably falling between Long Fangs and Wolf Guard.

As stated, Ragnar is known for his "Claws of Russ" Drop Pod assaults, so you'll want to have a lot of units in Pods, but that doesn't preclude him from having SwiftClaws, Sky Claws, other Transports or Tanks, etc.; he just might have somewhat less of a proportion of these things than some of the other Wolf Lords.

Wolf Priests answer only to the Great Wolf, so they go out to support the other Wolf Lords' Great Companies as Logan Grimnar wishes. However, you can assume that at least one, would accompany every GC at all times when they were out on campaign.

Similarly, the Dreadnoughts are a part of the Great Wolf's Company, and would be assigned out as needed to go accompany other GC's as needed. One important fluff point is that the Space Wolves have about 200 total dreadnoughts in the Chapter! This is significant, as we have way more than any other (as far as I know), but most of the time we leave them in stasis in The Fang. You could take as many, or as few as you feel like.

As for Rune Priests, they too officially belong to the Great Wolf's Company, but some really old fluff stated that there was a Rune Priest assigned to every Great Company on more or less a permanent basis (at least a close habitual relationship with a single GC). Njal Stormcaller himself was the Rune Lord that went with Ragnar (aren't you lucky!), so you should definitely take him. Additionally, any new Skalds (Rune Priest apprentices) would rotate through the GC's spending one year with each under the mentorship of the different Rune Priests to learn all of the Sagas, traditions, and heroes of each GC. So, you might want to have a "young" Rune Priest (without Master of Runes), with your GC to represent a Skald working under the mentorship of Njal.

I understand that the secondary colors and such may vary between companies. Am I correct on this?

Yes, markings vary significantly. According to Jervis Johnson, the markings used in the 3rd Edition codex were Ragnar's (I can provide you the quote if you need it).

Fluff wise are there any other HQs in Ragnar's GC that would be a huge mistake to forget?

Like I said earlier, don't leave out Njal, and you probably should also include Ulrik the Slayer as your Wolf Priest, as he always had strong associations with Ragnar, and was his mentor.

Is he the same guy in the Space Wolf books?

Yes and no. Officially, GW hasn't stated that he is one and the same, but there are way too many similarities to say no. When asked, the author said that they were the same as far as he was concerned. Unfortunately, there are a few fluff inconsistencies, where the author missed a few things. Most significantly, Ragnar Blackmane was found by Ulrick, and not Wolf Priest Ranek, and I believe there is also an inconsistency in the type of Wolf that Ragnar killed (Blackmane versus a Grey Wolf). However, BL books are known for departures from old studio-produced background material, so it shouldn't be a surprise when there are oddities.

Im sure ill end up with more later, but thanks for the help, and im getting started right away... Ill post pics as soon as possible!

Good luck, and keep us posted. Don't hesitate to ask if you have more questions. If you want to get a nod from old-school Ragnar players then paint his hair blond when you get to that stage. Blackmane is a name of honour taken for his having defeated a vicious Blackmane Wolf (the most dangerous of the various Fenrisian breeds), and has nothing to do with the color of his own hair. The original studio artwork and paint schemes all had our Ragnar as a blond.

Best regards,

Loremaster Valerian

Ok, I was definately planning on tailoring it to the Claws of Russ, quick, blood claw-y, drop pod-y force... But actually a smaller number of troops than i was thinking... Ill probably just go with enough drop pods for everyone and kinda go down from there with slightly fewer of everything mentioned... Ill work on a list and get it up along with any other progress... And Valerian, I was planning black hair, but being a blonde myself, I think im gonna do that... just have to practice up on it!

i have read mostly all of the space wolf books (except the last one which may acutally be when he is in command of his company) and one thing i noticed was that when they were attacking a city he only had like 5 GH squads, a single long fang squad, some sort of tank, and he personally was leading the blood claws. he also had some wolf scouts but it said they were under the command of Logan Grimmnar i'm also starting a thread to ask the populace of the forum about this since i don't remember that being said in the codex. i also remember reading somewhere that Ragnar leads the blood claws because he is still in the mind state of a blood claw cause hes so young. just some things to think about, if i find the book where i read about him leading his company, in an assault against the night lords i believe, i'll post what book it was in, i have both omnibuses and i know it was the prelude for one the novels in them.

Hello,

I will have to leave the numbers question to the experts but I remember in one of the books ragnar and sven are talking and they say something like 'I hope we get our own bikes this time'.

This to me sounds like they have some and its kind of first come first served as to who gets them?

Maybe anyway.

  • 2 weeks later...
at least you got the static pose down right.. nice work, but IMO the original Ragnar model is better looking than this model. was never a real fan of these minis, their better off just as statues or terrain pieces. I think their just ugly, and unproportional. Nothing against your work, wolf brother.

Really? I always loved these models... I like the poses, even though they are still poses, they are better than all the guys holding a pistol sideways, ccw in their other hand and looking straight forward... lol... ie, Ragnar, Ulrik... these look more realistic

They'd be great if the feet and packpacks weren't ridiculously large compared to the rest of the model. Other than that I agree with you.
