Interestingly enough, Horus Heresy artwork show Corvus (that is to say, the beakie ones that come as an option in most Space Marine kits) armour as the armour to wear during the Heresy, so it wouldn't be too much of a stretch to use some of those as well, no greenstuffing necessary. You can leave the helmets the way they are, just tell people you're a painter, not a sculptor, which seems to be true as far as I can see :D A very talented painter at that. Most of the guides around for PA would suggest Mk IV (or earlier) for pre heresy with Mk VI 'beakies' arriving during the heresy era but as you say much of the artwork shows a mixture of armour styles including Mk VI 'beakies' so if the OP is happy with a mix of armour go with it.
