Close combat weapon modeling options?

Recommended Posts

Since I am a 40k newb still, I don't know what other non-Space Wolves bits are out there.

For some reason I don't like the look of chainswords. Are there other marine arms with different close combat weapons? Normal swords / big knives? Maces? Eh?

There were more knives in earlier kits of SW's but the newer ones seem to have fewer available. The Catachan bayonettes are viable options for Wolf Scouts to remain a stealthy CC option instead of a noisy chainsword. Regular Pwoer Swords can also be used. If you have a particularly themed Army, try to fashion something fitting and appropriate. Just a quick example would be to use Katana's if you have a heavily Scout oriented Army for that Ninja appeal. Just sayin'.

Look to the Fantasy lines for inspiration and modeling options. Smaller hand axes or hatchets instead of more bulky options can/will easily give you a more unique appearance.

The marauders also have quite a few excellent heads for helmet-less wolves. I'd actually suggest a regular Warriors of Chaos unit as well. They have a lot of swords, hammers, and axes that would be perfectly acceptable as a Space wolf ccw. Also, in that set, there are A LOT of them.

Fantasy Dwarves and some of the older fantasy orcs have some very sweet and barbaric looking axes that I have used on my SW models...as it is said...'an infant that does not grab and hold the axe is thrown into the oceans' axes only seem fitting IMHO

You could always just put the weapon head onto some appropriate brass rod though right? Weapon hafts usually end up too short when you trim them anyway.

The Warhammer Orc Regiments have some hefty looking weapons in them too.

Awesome ideas all around everyone.

Beef, I actually don't want the weapons to look big on the marines. I want them to be close combat weapons, if the axe/mace/knife/whatever is huge people might think it is a power weapon of some sort. Smaller hatchets, maces and knives would be perfect for me. I've looked up some of the suggestions and so far I have seen a lot of promising stuff.

Yeah, I just looked these up and I'm liking the look of their maces. Decent sized but still wouldn't be confused for a "power mace".

Hey there

I use the axes from the chaos warriors. They fit perfectly and the hand is even the right size for just cutting at the wrist

It's a little hard to see but the the Blood claw behind Ulf has a CW axe -with hand and all and the one next to Rune too

cheers

Suprise no one said about the CHaos Bestman. They have some pretty cool axes that are the right size for a Marine/look epic.

Some of them have some runes which is cool/fit with the Space Wolves, rune are not to chaos. You could also use some of the shields as well.

Update:

I got my hands on some Warhammer Fantasy Black Orc stuff. The maces are sweet, and the thick scary looking butcher knife type blades are big but would never be confused with a power sword (and they seem perfect for Thunderwolf Cavalry). The Orc axes are a little big and could be mistaken for frost axes. There are some dwarf hatchets that I imagine are smaller that could work.

Also, I acquired some Chaos Marine knives, which are on the small side, but potential could work.

As I wanted some fantasy look more than sci-fi in my SW I´ve used a lot of bitz of fantasy sprues, marauders on foot, mounted, chaos warriors etc.

you can see it in my PLOG: http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/index.p...howtopic=191478

I think the scale and theme fits perfectly for SW. In my case, as I want all my army not to wear helmet, these sprues have also really fantastic heads for SW .. Hope it helps you

Everything I was going to suggest has been ninja'd by above posters. I would have suggested the dwarven axes from the LoTR range but they are a different scale and that annoys me rather a lot frankly. Maybe the two-handed variants? I just prefer the more angled 'square-er' look to my axes personally.
