Wolfblade are the twenty four warriors sent to guard some poxy Navigator's backside. Its a dead end job that is seen as something of an exile. Whoever has the bad timing to screw up when a Wolfblade gets killed is the one sent. So they end being a motley collection of bloodclaws, greyhunters, longfangs, and wolf scouts.

was working on a different trend, http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/index.p...howtopic=212269 and what Jonas said got me thinking. Are Wolf Blades a collection of Bloodclaws, Grey Hunters, Long Fangs or Wolf Scouts? I'd like to know what everyone's interpretation of a Wolf Blade is and why.

I've always pictured a Wolf Blade to be a Grey Hunter for some reason, its a happy balance. But I guess anything is possible! I just figured, if a Bloodclaw ever did something stupid or reckless enough to be sent to Terra, 90% of the time it usually just got that Bloodclaw killed on the battle field. Being less experienced. And if a Bloodclaw can be a Wolf Blade.. then why hasn't Lukas been sent to Terra? I mean, from his fluff.. he should have been either dead from all his crazy antics or sent to Terra a very long time ago.

I say Grey Hunter is a happy balance because, their not reckless and inexperienced as Bloodclaws, and their not elite and mature like Wolf Guard or Long Fangs. If it was a Long Fang... I dunno seems possible, but a Veteran Space Wolf ususally knows better judgement, and can hold his composure. A Wolf Scout? I think they are to anti-social to do anything to be sent to Terra in the first place. Wolf Scouts do their own thing and prefer it that way. I dunno, like I said it just got me thinking LOL

is there a right or wrong? I do believe anything is possible, so anything goes.. I just think logically, a Grey Hunter is a more suitable candidate.

According to the William King books your rank before you go is irrelevant- you were selected for the Wolfblade, and that is all that matters. Its a dubious 'honor' because it takes you away from your pack, and pits you into situations that most SWs would not find enjoyable- worlds of intrigue and backbiting politics.

Ragnar was a Bloodclaw when he was sent to the Wolfblade, one of his associates mentioned briefly that he had been a wolf gaurd before coming, and Id imagine Haegr never made it out of the bloodclaws before being shipped out- hence his predisposition towards bolt pistols, but I could be wrong.

It was also mentioned that Wolfblades were (possibly) being groomed for leadership roles, so total nutters wouldn't be sent but headstrong wolves might be, Hence Ragnar over Lukas.

I seem to recall that it was mentioned ine one of Ragnar's books that Logan had also been a Wolf Blade...

Or was it one of the other lords?

I think it mentions that and isn't the current leader of Wolfblade one of Logan's packmates? He must have been a Wolf Guard from before Logan took over his current great comapny.

The "mighty" Haegr preferred giving his foes "a good thrashing" with his trusty ThunderHammer most of the time. On Charys, however, there was mention of him using a BoltGun. Torin was very likely a Grey Hunter as it was mentioned often that he used his Bolter as well as his prowess with his blade. Most likely a PowerSword though he did pick up a ChainSword from time to time.

Also in Son's of Feris novel, there is a Blood Claw who is part of the Wolf Blade. I think his reason was disobay a order, not complete sure as it was Dec when I read through the two Space Wolves Omnibus.

Just finished it myself. And yes,the new arrival was a Blood Claw that disobeyed orders and rushed headlong into the fray once too many times and was sent to serve as a WolfBlade. He exhibited said behavior before Ragnar and the others and was eventually put into his place bybeing reminded of what that almost cost him upon arrival on Charys. He minded his orders when thy were given sternly enough by Ragnar.

Back to the question posed by the OP. The WolfBlade are from all ranks of the Space Wolves. They are sent for various reasons by the Great Wolf to serve a long time ally in The House Belasarius. They in turn have a resident contingent of Navigators living on Fenris in direct service of the Great Wolf. The exchange strengthens an alliance forged by Russ himself in the earliest days of the Chapters founding.

In some cases a Space Wolf has brought dishonor upon himself and is sent to the WolfBlade until he has redeemed himself and his honor. There is no set time perios of said duty, or exile as other make reference to it. Upon such time as the Great Wolf recalls te Space Wolf to the Fang to rejoin his brothers, his duty is to serve the House Belasarius as a representative of the Space Wolf Chapter.

It's either that or he is still a Wolfblade from the time when Logan was one.
