Fred Johnson the 3rd jr
I spray painted my Rhino grey and then black washed the whole thing and it didn't look so good. Even after some dry brushing and detail work I still was not really happy with how it turned out. What I do works fine enough for figures but not here. I am guessing wash on huge flat surfaces was the problem, along with lack of skill. In any case, how do you guys paint your Rhinos and Razorbacks? Black wash in the cracks only? Do you use pigments? Any other tricks or advice? Thanks in advance. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/212583-vehicle-painting-advice/ Share on other sites
CainTheHunter
I do the base coat - in my case Shadow Grey, then wash all cracks and and recesses with Asurmen Blue. Sometimes I spash a bit over flat surfaces as well, but I thin down that wash with water 40/60 at least. Then I use a big flat soft brush to start some sort of drybrush/overbrush with a mix of Shadow Grey/SW grey - the idea is to get some sort of weathering, dusting effect. I finish with the same flat brush, giving some white highlighing in raised areas. And if I feel like I need it, I give some wash of Asurmen blue or Badab Black again in some areas - cracks mostly. Dewi Sant
The idea behind a wash is that it pools in the recesses giving an effect of depth and shading. There for adding it to large flat areas doesn't give a pleasing effect. Try adding it to the right angles in the armour and try a very light dry brush on the extreme edges of the armour. Paying attention to details such as lights and periscopes can make all the difference. Blackmane
-I prime black and then shadow grey -What I'm trying this time around is to give it a light brush of the SG/SW blend to get some texture -I then paint thin vertical streaks in then fenris grey and shadow grey/sw grey(my darkest high light) with an Airbrush to represent rain marks -I run thinned down Fenris grey in the recesses Finally I high light the edges with SG/SW and then pure SW What I end up with is this http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/index.p...=0#entry2502773 cheers Frizze Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/212583-vehicle-painting-advice/#findComment-2529681 Share on other sites
Fred Johnson the 3rd jr
Cool, thanks for all the advice so far guys. For those of you who prime with grey spraypaint, what do you do with the treads? Do you prime them separately in black and then glue them on the grey primed body, or do you just prime everything at once and paint the treads once they are on there? Actually, I am priming them Codex grey too. Never had any trouble with them - I just paint them boltgun metal and wash with badab black afterwards. Then add a mix of Sepia/Ogryn flesh/Devlan Mud into some recesses for rust and dirt.
