Phlegon
Hello, I just got my citadel spray gun and was wondering if I needed to undercoat my minis before I sprayed the foundation paint onto the mini? Sorry if this is a dumb or repeatitive question, my search fu is weak at the moment. Thanks Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/212718-citadel-spray-gun/ Share on other sites
templarboy
Hello, I just got my citadel spray gun and was wondering if I needed to undercoat my minis before I sprayed the foundation paint onto the mini? Sorry if this is a dumb or repeatitive question, my search fu is weak at the moment. Thanks I would prime before spraying on the base coat. The paint will stick better. Paint out of an airbrush is pretty thin and will need the undercoat. Myxx
What about priming in general? Only on plastic, only on metal? Do you do a spray coat of primer with the gun all the time? winterdyne
Always clean, always prime. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/212718-citadel-spray-gun/#findComment-2531066 Share on other sites
Tanhausen
Yes, always prime. In plastic it MIGHT not be a big difference (though your playing with fire). In metal, if you don't prime, the paint simply won't stick, specially acrylic. Do prime, even if its only a light coat. Gurth
I never prime plastic models (unless they have metal parts, but then it's really for those) and have never had any problems with paint flaking or chipping on them. For metal figures, always use primer — the whole purpose of that is to make the subsequent layers adhere better than they would without, and on metal, you really do need that. Bay
Always primer your models, it makes life so much easier for the following layers of paint. Though I believe GW's chaos black in a can is not primer. I use krylon primer. The airbrush/spray gun is good for layering a solid/even layer of foundation paint quickly. (I only use this on my tanks/walkers). Happy painting! Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/212718-citadel-spray-gun/#findComment-2532581 Share on other sites
chromedog
^What he said. Chaos black in a can is NOT primer. It is an acrylic spray paint. Primers have a particular formulation that is meant to help paint adhere better to it, and primers themselves adhere better to the surface than normal paints. Always clean, always prime. I use a commonly available sandable matt automotive primer (white or grey for lighter base colours, black for darker) and apply hobby acrylics over that.
