Highlighting black with blue

Recommended Posts

I am OK with painting black when I use gray highlights..

I recently started painting my Death Company, and I thought blue highlights would look really cool on them. However, as soon as I tried it, I realized it looks like crap..

What's the trick to this? I've tried with many blues, some look just too dark, some look just too blue..

Oh, I tried edge highlighting by the way.. Maybe I should try something more subtle like layering? Grays work great for edge highlighting..

My advice would be to highlight up to the edges in grey, then use a really watered down wash of blue paint to go over the grey. This is called a glaze and will allow the highlight effect to show through but will trick the eye to think it is blue.

I did this effect on my chaplain and was quite happy with the results: Link
