tahrikmili
I am OK with painting black when I use gray highlights.. I recently started painting my Death Company, and I thought blue highlights would look really cool on them. However, as soon as I tried it, I realized it looks like crap.. What's the trick to this? I've tried with many blues, some look just too dark, some look just too blue.. Oh, I tried edge highlighting by the way.. Maybe I should try something more subtle like layering? Grays work great for edge highlighting.. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/212751-highlighting-black-with-blue/ Share on other sites
WingsOfTheFalcon
My advice would be to highlight up to the edges in grey, then use a really watered down wash of blue paint to go over the grey. This is called a glaze and will allow the highlight effect to show through but will trick the eye to think it is blue. I did this effect on my chaplain and was quite happy with the results: Link Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/212751-highlighting-black-with-blue/#findComment-2531046 Share on other sites
Hemal
alternatively you start with a regal + black mix, adding steadily more regal to the mix, and you are working on tiny areas near the edge of teh plate - extreme highlights would probably be best as ice blue or SW grey Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/212751-highlighting-black-with-blue/#findComment-2531063 Share on other sites
Kinzel
Yeah I tried doing this ages ago with red instead. :/ Instead of a nice crisp black with red highlights they ended up looking like rather messy browny red marines. Blue would at least have that cold metal feel. Brother Nihm
Use Hawk Turqoise instead, I'll see if I can get you a better picture than this though (it doesn't really show): Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/212751-highlighting-black-with-blue/#findComment-2531617 Share on other sites
