Lessons learned vs Eldar

So played 1750 against friend's Eldar list tonight. I made three major mistakes that easily lost me the win and forced a draw. Game was 5 objectives, table quarters deployment.

Major mistake 1:

I forgot to assault with two CRUCIAL units. I got so caught up organizing a muliple assault of one GH pack against some Guardians and a Falcon that I went right into rolling without moving my two other GH units into assault. This screw up and his following shooting phase on those unengaged models resulted in the death of like 10 GH!!! The one assault I did do wiped out the remainder of one of his Guardian squads and immobilzed the Falcon. Had I remembered to assault the Fire Dragons and other Guardian squad, it would have cleared two objectives he ended up contesting.

Major mistake 2:

I severely under estimated the amount of firepower that can be put out by Eldar and thus did not follow my normally strict adherence to the doctrine of close support. I sent one GH pack to do a job that I should have sent two. By splitting my GH between two targets thinking I could wipe both out, I only ended up partially getting the job done. Wiping out one target with both packs and then heading easily to the second, with both packs, would have guaranteed the destructtion of all enemies on that flank. Gotta write down, "CLOSE SUPPORT" in marker on my hands.

Major mistake 3:

Letting my Thunderlord get bogged down by a unit of Guardians when there were Warp Spiders hopping around dealing out a ton of shots. I had an opportunity to wipe them out the moment they deep struck, but decided to let my Long Fangs try and take them out via frags which failed miserably. Long Fangs should have downed the Falcon I ended up sending the Thunderlord to down, and instead sent him to wipe them out. They caused way too much trouble for me not to take them out earlier next time.

All told, despite the draw and mistakes, I am pretty happy with this game. It was against a long time friend that I had not played against in about 10yrs. Back then I was just right into the game playing my Salamanders box army. We met at a local tourney where he had the most amazing all Scouts army with his dreads being converted scout sentinels. He wiped me off the board........hahahaha! So a draw 10yrs later I can be happy with for now.
