Stormraven - How do you use it?

Heya Folks ;)

i dont have much experience, i´m currently building my army to get a base stock of models to play with :)

Yesterday, i got my hands on the parts for a "cheap" Stormraven (Crux Pattern, i just need to build/paint it ;-))

While thinking about how to paint it (DC black or BA red), i thought about what to carry with the Stormraven.

My first thought was a DC with Dread:

7 Man Death Company

+4 Powerweapons

+3 Power Fists

Chaplain (or Reclusiarch)

DC Dreadnought

+ Magna Grapple

Cost: 715p.

Second Option would be a Sang. Guard and a Furioso Dread:

Sang. Guard

+ Chapter Banner

+2 Inferno Pistols

+ Power Fist

Sang. Priest

+ Jump Pack

+ Lightning Claw

Furioso Dreadnought

+ extra Armour

+ Magna Grapple

Cost: 705p

Third option that comes into my mind is the Assault Termi Squad with Sang. Priest and Librarian; and the Furioso:

Assault Terminator Squad

+2 Hammer+Shield

Sang. Priest

+ Lightning Claw

Librarian

Furioso Dreadnought

+ extra Armour

+ Magna Grapple

Cost: 730p

The reason why i like the Blood Angels is the speed and flexibility which gives the various codex entries. The Stormraven comes to my mind every time i think about bringing my guys fast to the enemy. Most other options include a Land Raider (Termis and DC) and Drop Pods for the Dreads. But the Stormraven is one thing that is unique to the BA, its fast, it has no problem with terrain and still has good weapons (including the machine spirit).

so, reading from the paper, i like the stormraven. but..... i played about 2 matches, and i lost both :P

How do you use the Stormraven?

Which options do you find neccessary/useful?

thanks in advance :)

I tend to run them as a pair... one has Lemartes + 4-5 DC with no Jump Packs (besides Lemartes) and one Power Fist, with a TL Assault Cannon and TL Multi Melta. The other has a TLMM and TL Lascannon, and carries Mephiston and a DC Dread with Talons. Both Stormravens have Extra Armour, which, combined with PotMS, means you should always get some kind of shooting off. Stick 'em both in reserve (NOT DEEP STRIKING OH GOD NEVER AGAIN), and bring them on as far as you need to depending on how things are at the time. :) If there's a lot of armour on the board, if both come on at once, move in 6", and thanks to PotMS you can do up to 4 targets some mischief. Alternatively blaze 18-24"" down the board for the cover save firing a single shot, safe in the knowledge that their contents will most likely be able to assault whatever you want killed in your next turn, even if their ride DOES get shot down.

One Upgrade I'm not sure about is the Typhoon Missile Launcher... I like it on Landspeeders, but when every other weapons option is twin-linked, it's hard to justify considering it costs points compared to the others being free upgrades. There's been argument for using a Stormraven as a 48" range gunship with TLLC and a Typhoon, but I don't remember it doing well enough the time I tried it for me to keep doing so.

You know I love the idea of this vehicle, absolutely fluffy IMO and just a great addition to our force. But...... The one time I tried it out, I was so scared to move it anywhere cause it's such a huge target. To use this veh effectively you must have something else thats just as frightening to turn the opponents attention away from it. I think you have to have a LR on the board with terminators or DC with Chaplain in it. Anything really. Once the official model comes out I'll start cranking out lists and strategies based around it. I had one but I doubt it'll be competitive. It'll just be hard for a friendly game opponent to stand up to it.
I have so far used armies with one storm raven. First turn I move it 24" to Multi-Melta a primary target (landraider ect). So far I have never had one shot down before it was able to drop its troops where I wanted them. Had broadsides fire on it, and they only managed to destroy a weapon. Moving 24" first turn firing a weapon, and having a 4+ cover save, from the movement, armor 12 and, immunity to melta, AND an assault vehicle. What more could you ask for?

Armour value 12 is why it isn't as effective as a land raider. and it isn't immune to melta, melta don't get the extra d6 against it for armour penetration.

can you still drop the load after it moves that far? plus why does everyone keep saying that it gets a 4+ cover save? I thought only bikes got that, not just any fast moving veh.

No, can't drop the load if it's gone over 12" (unless you're using skies of blood, but then they can't assault).

4+ cover save is from a Fast Skimmer moving over 12".

To the OP:

A good fit is 10 Death Co. with a Reclusiarch, a PW and a TH/PF. You're making your DC way over-costed giving them all weapons. They'll murdalize the first thing they come into contact with, then get shot to death on the opponent's turn, and every DC you lose is worth either 45pts or 60pts. That's more than a terminator. Think about it. You want a majority of non-pw troops to throw out the trash attacks and take the hits. A Death Co. dreadnought as well will ensure that this thing won't make it past the second turn, as your opponent will take every opportunity to gun it down.

Another good fit are assault terminators with a terminator librarian and a furioso (possibly librarian) dreadnought.

I don't think transporting jump troops is really worth it unless they're Sanguinary Guard.

I reckon, if one is using 1 SR and a DC, one should be using Lemartes with the DC in the SR, even if they're footsloggers. 4jpDC+lemartes is a pretty uber anti-infantry unit and it leaves space in the SR for a libby plus a libby(/furioso) Dread for some SoS redundancy. Or, one can have 5-9 footslogging DC with lemmie and a libbyHQ with a DC dread.

*shrug*

I like the SoS SR. Very smart armour list core if you ask me. Meph' and a DC dread are pretty uber too.
