ApostleBalthazar
Hey everyone, this is my first post on the site, so I am very sorry if it is not in the suitable place, please forgive me. I am new to 40K and a beginner painter, looking for some help and tips on painting. Ok so, I have decided to go for a Chaos army of the Word Bearers legion because I like their look and their fluff. I have painted a Chaos Marine here. The base is unfinished. Need some help with painting the base. I was looking for some tips on how I could improve my painting skills, and in particular, I was looking to know how to highlight models (this one in particular). So please, any criticisms/advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks :) http://b.imagehost.org/0252/VCD_Mockup_007.jpg http://b.imagehost.org/0503/VCD_Mockup_008.jpg http://b.imagehost.org/0806/VCD_Mockup_009.jpg http://b.imagehost.org/0534/VCD_Mockup_010.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/212874-word-bearers-painting-help/ Share on other sites
SCC
Hello and welcome Balthazar ;) Looks like you've made a good solid start there, the mini is neatly and evenly coated and looks pretty good with just base colours on it. Highlighting is simple to do but hard to master, that said even moderately good highlighting looks excellent and isn't too hard to pull off. Below are some links to tutorials for painting red, including highlighting and often shading too that will be worth your time to read: GW Blood Angels - probably too red but the pics will provide good guidance on where to highlight to begin with, as you practice you'll develop your own highlighting techniques and tricks. GW Khorne Berzerker - shows how to highlight a deeper red, pics aren't as good as easy to follow as the BA ones though. B&C Librarium: Midian's red tutorial - nice big pics & simple instructions It's also important to highlight the non-red areas, you can apply the same techniques as above to metals and blacks, simply use a lighter version of the base colour to highlight the edges of the mini. As you practice more you can try blending, washes, glazes, shading and other more advanced techniques. If you've got a GW store or a hobby store with a painting desk it's always worth going down and asking some questions in person. If you don't then a copy of something like 'How to paint Space Marines' or 'How to paint Citadel miniatures' will be a good guide to the basic/intermediate world of 40K painting and modelling. Regarding basing, again, there's a load of tutorials around to guide and inspire you as you create your army, really it'll come down to the them you've chosen for your bases: B&C Librarium: Metallic Bases B&C Librarium: Urban Bases B&C Librarium: Paved bases - great if you don't have any flock or other materials handy There are other tutorials for things like swamp and lava bases in the Librarium too so feel free to look around for more inspiration!
