Space Wolves WIP

Bat33.1

Recommended Posts

I've recently gone back to my favourite army Space Wolves and am building new units. So far I've got a squad of Grey Hunters complete with Wolf Guard Leader and a squad of Long Fangs built ready to paint. I've finally got around to finishing a razorback that I had on the shelf for a while I'm not completely happy with the finish on this so I feel I will need to experiment a bit more on my final colour and weathering aproach. My older Space Wolves were painted in a blue-grey mix of Shadow Grey, Space Wolves Grey and Kommando Khaki mix but I'm looking at moving towards a more neutral grey this time probably based on a Codex/Fortress grey base but I'm going to do a bit of testing with Vallejo greys too before I nail this down.

Here's what I've got so far...

Long Fangs

I've left heads and weapons off to make painting easier on some of the figures but it should give an idea of where I'm going with these.

Thanks for the kind comments.

I too prefer the old school darker grey look. It feels gritier than the current heavy metal 'baby blue' look and I feel the darker grey lends itself to a hevier weathered finish.

Here are a couple of my earlier 'baby blue' efforts

Much of my painting technique has been inspired, and hopefully improved, by fellow posters on B+C posting guides for their own figures. I take bits from here and there and try them out, adapt them and tweak them to my own skill level as much of the inspirational work on here is far too fine for my abilities. DV8's SW army has inspired much of my current wolves work along with a useful guide for painting grey marines from here: http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/index.p...showarticle=449 So thanks for the guides folks :P

The Vindi (and drednought) were painted with my old mix of 1:1:1 shadow grey/space wolves grey/Kommando Khaki using a GW spray gun as it gives a smoother finish on vehicles - I now use an airbrush as it gives much finer control. The shading was done with thinned adeptus battle grey and edge highlights with thinned space wolves grey with a touch of shadow grey to pull it back a little as I find pure space wolves grey too harsh a contrast. I then use adeptus grey to add chips/battle damage with space wolves grey used on the lower edge to enhance some of the chipping to make it look deeper. The weathering was started with a wash of devlun mud on the lower areas -tracks, wheels, lower hull, etc. and then drybrushed with bestial brown. The next stage is weathering powders added to taste - both Mig and Forge World pigments work well - I then use Mig pigment fixer to make the powder permanent. Then once it's all dry a coat of your preffered varnish matt/satin/gloss finishes the job - I use GW purity seal as it works well. Last I will pick out vision blocks and other details in gloss ardcoat.

If you've got any specific questions or details you'd like cleared up please ask.

I dunno how long you've been playing but 17 yrs ago when I was playing that baby blue grey was the color of space wolves lol. I took a break until 7 yrs ago and seen the dark grey on them and was like :pirate: they changed them?!?! But I do like the darker grey it's not as flamboyant as it was in 2nd edition.

Great work man I can't wait so see more. So what kind of hq choices are you going to make?

Those Blood Claws are great, even if they are your old scheme. I am confused though, is this a new army your doing or will you be repainting the old one as well?

It's not that GW changed their scheme but more the players and painters drifted towards this scheme as we think it looks better than th whole "Look at me in my baby blue armour, it in no way stunts my barbarianism!".

Personally I like both and so went sort of half and half with mine

thanks for the reply. Your technique hits on two questions I have had for some time but can't seem to get straight, if i may:

1. does the pigment fixer really hold the pigment on and protect it effectively even when the pigment has been applied so thickly as you have done on the dozer blade?

2. when you applying GW's seal (Matte Varnish, correct?) how do you avoid bubbles on the thickly applied pigment? does the fixer protect against this? also, the color of your pigments look preserved and in my experience matte varnish usually changes the color a bit. do anything special?

thanks so much!

Yeah I know what you mean about the colour changing over the years but I think a lot of the artwork was always darker and gritier than the painted figures so I just wanted a change of direction with my own army and decided that the darker look was one I liked. I find it quicker to paint the darker grey too but I have played around with some different techniques on the baby blue recently just to compare.

I'm not sure on my HQ choices yet but most likely Rune Priests will be near the top of the list on a bang for buck basis.

I'm painting and building more or less from scratch as I sold off quite a bit of my baby blue stuff - still got the blood claws and a few other units but the Vindicator and dread have gone to new homes. I've got a FW Venerable Dread on the go but not got much further than sub assemblies plus undercoat so far. Mech will be built to suit the new list.

The weathering powders were layered on and each one fixed as I went along but you are correct with the colour changing - they go darker when the fixer is used so a little experimentation will be needed to get a finish you are happy with. Varnish works when mixed in with the weathering powder but you can't then brush it off if you aren't happy with it. No problems with it rubbing off when fixed with Purity Seal though, lightly spray from 10-12" away and let it fully cure for a couple of days before adding another coat and you are good to go.

Another update of progress with my Grey Hunters/Wolf Guard squad plus the Long Fangs.

I've changed the colour scheme and gone with the codex style pack markings of red for Grey Hunters, white for Long Fangs and yellow for Wolf Guard. While doing this I decided to change the great company to Logans so black shoulder pads with Great Wolf markings - well once they are done at least :D

These are very much still WIP but getting closer now to the finished look...

Finally finished my grey hunters squad and wolf guard leader. I might add some blood effects to the chainswords but not certain yet, other than that they are done.

The Long fangs are coming along nicely with the armour painting complete and some of the detail work done. I'll post the finished pictures of them once they are complete.

Thanks Brother-chaplain Astador, I have days when I like the baby blue look as it's always been a Space Wolves scheme but other times I feel it's too pretty. Along the lines of 'very smart but can they fight?'

Long Fangs now complete

I am going to start building a second Grey Hunter squad next while starting on the painting of my FW Venerable Dred. I'm thinking of adding a few more bare heads and wolf parts to the mix this time as I'm not sure if I have the right balance between Space Marine and Space Wolf?

Thanks E Min and Cap'n Mick :)

Any thoughts on the wolfie-ness or lack of with these?

I can't make my mind up on the amount of detail to add to the next squad as more detail = slower painting time but a bit more Space Wolf than Space Marine? I feel there's a balance to be struck between the two but I'm not sure if I've got it right?
