New to BFG

Greetings. I just bought my first ships for BFG today (after much contemplation and coaxing from a particularly passionate GW employee) and I was wondering what I should expect for game size. I'm not looking to build a particularly large fleet and I also want the majority of my games to seem more like patrols stumbling across pirates rather than full fledged naval battles. Is that possible?

Many thanks and much appreciated in advance. :)

A typical game is 1500 points. That's usually enough to get around 7-8 capital ships. Taking escorts will reduce the number of capital ships though and give you a higher overall model count. 750 is alright for small fleet actions since you can get a fair number of ships but it doesn't take that long to play. 500 points is the lowest I would play; for me that's enough points to take a vengeance and 2x dauntless. Below that and you are mainly looking at all escort fleets.

500-750 is a small battle, over 750 and youll have to use some of your points for an admiral.

For a standard imperial fleet at 750 Id reccommend a pair of light cruisers, and a battle cruiser with carrier capacity... and one decently sized or two small units of swords or cobras.

Thanks for the responses, guys.

After taking what was said into consideration, 500 pts seems to be the most appealing game size. It's small (and thus quick and fits into the theme I was hoping to build) and relatively cheap.

@Grey Mage: I chose to play as Marines, so I don't know if I could follow your advice on that matter. The ships I have already ordered are a Strike Cruiser and four Hunter Class Destroyers. I was thinking of finishing my initial fleet off with the addition of three Nova Class Frigates. I'm pretty sure that this list would be beyond laughable in a competitive game, but could it work?

For 500pts., take a second strike cruiser with what you bought, you currently have 350pts. The cruiser will give you a second bombard cannon, which should be tasty in games of that size :)

Another Strike Cruiser is definitely tempting. However, it always bothered me that Space Marines would so willingly commit such ships in a fleet engagement. Meh, game and fluff segregation; I may just roll with it.

I have been playing recently too .. its one of my favourite GW games :)

I hope you enjoy it!

I'm sure I will; I've been beside myself waiting to paint up my ships. In fact, they arrived today, but my Strike Cruiser seems to be missing some parts as I can't seem to make it look like the picture on the site. I know it's definitely missing its stand. How many parts does a Strike Cruiser come in? Mine came in five.

IIRC, you should have the prow, main ships body, two fins that go on either side of the engine, a turret, the wing section that is affixed around hte middle of the ship, and I think an antenna bit that goes under the prow.

:D

Thanks, brother. I have the main body, the wing thing, the prow, and the two fins. That means I'm missing two bitz and the base. Hooray!

if you want it to seem just like patrols, mostly a squadron of escorts and a light cruiser should do that.

you could also do a BB out on patrol alone if you'd like.

a trio of cobras and a cruiser i'd say would make a fine patrol or scouting flotilla

(whoops guess i automatically assumed you were playing IN before i read what you ordered, but you can still use cobras if you wanted :P)

Consider using the Segmentum Solar list for fleets of SMs with Imperial backup, or vice-versa. I find it more fluffy in general, though a few things get more expensive.

Oooh, advice on building fluffier fleets? Thank ye kindly, indeed.

@Inquisitor_Lensoven: No worries, it'll be sound advice for my little bro who's also starting BFG as the IN (or Chaos, he hasn't decided which way he wants to whoop me yet).

@Grey Mage: I'll check the list out. This is still all new to me, and with school doing its very best to steal my soul, I haven't really had the time to fully immerse myself in all the BFG material. It's quite a lot.

The Segmentum Solar fleet list allows you to take some SM and some IN ships in the same fleet- some of them are more expensive than they would be normally, and there is some option to make a ship that is normally IN into a SM ship, increasing its abilities in boarding actions and its Leadership values.... IIRC its around 20pts.

Something like-

Strike Cruiser- 145pts.

Dicatator Cruiser- 220pts.

3 Gladius Frigates or Firestorm Frigates- 135pts.

500pts.

I can definitely see something like that happening. You know, maybe the IN cruiser was a patrol that met up with something just a bit too nasty. Thus, POOF: we have the Adeptus Astartes coming in to save the day.

My replacement package for my faulty Strike Cruiser came in today and boy was I surprised. Rather than just give me the replacement parts I asked for, GW was kind enough to send me an entirely new Strike Cruiser. That was rather generous of them. ;)

The stories about how good GW Customer Service is are indeed true.
