Starting Sisters of Battle

So..... Having played Warhammer 40k for many years and having collected Crimson Fists, Iron Warriors, Eldar, and Space Wolves I have decided to try something a little less mainstream... So, I am wondering if anyone has any good advice for someone starting out with SOB.

What are some good models to start out a good well rounded force?

4 rhinos 60 sisters 18 serafs 2 canoness. 3 exorcist and your more or less done with sob. If play something bigger then normal games [like apo] you can start thinking about retris , but to be honest you may as well buy some IG units and they will out performs them and in normal game you wont have free slots in heavies , because you will play with 3 exorcist.

my 1500pts list is pretty much this.

2 exorcists

10 rets with 4 hev/bolters + VS, + imagifier

10 sisters + vs + imagifier

10 sisters + vs + imagifier

10 sisters + vs + imagifier

6 sisters with 4 meltaguns + VS + Imagifier + obligitory rhino

1 Cannoness + crazy stuff ( invunerable save, imune to instant death, 1 free faith point)

1 Inquisitor + stuff + retinue + rhino. (guys tooled up to be anti Deep striking with 2 mystics, and has a psy hood to prevent powers. add a few CC retinue to boost his stats, give him a force weapon and he can be a nice little charecter killer)

I pretty much whore faith points.

Yeah, I dont really want to use the whole allied rule. As cool as it is and how insane it cane be. I want to run pure sisters. There is a large argument that SOB is the bottom tier list for Warhammer 40k. I want to show these chumps they are still VERY competative and although a large majority of their rules are void at this point they still can be very strong. *cough* AP1 Flamer.....

Not really sold on exorcists, but here's what I would do at 1500pts:

HQ: Canoness (11#, 378 pts)

1 Canoness @ 378 pts (Book of St. Lucius; Frag Grenades; Eviscerator; Add Celestian Retinue)

7 Celestian Retinue (Frag Grenades; Bolter x5; Flamer x2; Add Priest)

1 Priest (Brazier of Holy Fire x1; Eviscerator)

1 Rhino (Extra Armor; Smoke Launchers; Storm Bolter)

1 Veteran Sister Superior (Brazier of Holy Fire x1; Eviscerator)

Troops: Battle Sisters Squad (11#, 227 pts)

9 Battle Sisters Squad (Bolter x7; Meltagun x2)

1 Rhino (Blessed Ammunition; Extra Armor; Pintle-mounted Storm Bolter; Smoke Launchers; Storm Bolter)

1 Veteran Sister Superior (Book of St. Lucius; Bolter)

Troops: Battle Sisters Squad (11#, 227 pts)

9 Battle Sisters Squad (Bolter x7; Meltagun x2)

1 Rhino (Blessed Ammunition; Extra Armor; Pintle-mounted Storm Bolter; Smoke Launchers; Storm Bolter)

1 Veteran Sister Superior (Book of St. Lucius; Bolter)

Troops: Battle Sisters Squad (11#, 217 pts)

9 Battle Sisters Squad (Bolter x7; Meltagun x2)

1 Rhino (Blessed Ammunition; Extra Armor; Smoke Launchers; Storm Bolter)

1 Veteran Sister Superior (Book of St. Lucius; Bolter)

Heavy Support: Immolator (1#, 78 pts)

SoB definitely aren't at the bottom of the pile, so make sure you enjoy the look on their faces when you crush them in the name of the Emprah! For collecting a "well rounded" force Artein has it spot on. A good number of Sisters and flame/melta weaponry with some metal boxes and an Exo or two along with at least one Canoness will form the core of almost every list. When in doubt, just add more SoB! Once you have such a collection you can branch out a bit more ;)

Good luck in your games, don't forget to let us know how you get along! Have you thought about colour schemes yet?

...or more exorcists!!! :P

Good to have another member into the fold, I'd echo WF's comments that Sisters can be a force to be reckoned with and it's just a case of play testing with them to understand what they can do and how to acheive the best results.

Couple of points to bear in mind. Sisters are most efficient in that 12-18" range (move then rapid fire) so you need to understand how to acheive that range without being drawn into CC or assaulted. It can be a tricky task but ultimately when you start to get it to work you'll soon understand how effective they can be when also combining AoF into the mix. Divine Guidence (DG) is a real killer when used at this range and even more so when you get into flamer template territory.

The other thing to remember is that the Book of St Lucius (BoSL) is pretty much an essential for all frontline squads. Given the need to get into these kind of ranges after you've torn into your opponent's ranks with bolter/template fire you'll often be on the brunt of a subsequent assault. With this being the case it makes a real difference if you know that your girls stand a good chance of holding the line for any assaults and whittle down those units further. Don't be decieved in thinking that Sisters will be crushed in CC, they can be pretty resilient but that's as a result of their 3+ armour save as appossed to being good in CC or toughness as well as not being affected by the number of casualties taken in CC (thanks to BoSL).

Good luck with it, keep us informed of your progress.
