Bran Redmaw's Great Company.

Greetings all :)

Way back, close to 20 years ago, i sat at a friends house excitedly looking over a copy of his 'White Dwarf' magazine. There was a battle described within, played out in colour photo's of grey robot looking warriors, fighting a horde of enemy troops. They were joined by a larger 'robot', named Bjorn the Fell Handed. I was hooked! (and i also need to admit, Bjorn was 'killed' in that battle report, and i spent months wondering if that meant he could no longer be used in any games people played :P).

Despite buying (well being given as presents) Space Hulk, Space Crusade and Heroquest (and all its expansion) i never did get into 40k proper, until around 2002. I ran a youth drop in center and the local games club had come to ask if they could relocate to my building, as they had run out of room at their current location. I searched around and bought up a decent amount of second hand marines, planning ot start the army of Grey armored super troopers i had read about in my youth. Unfortunately, the first night arrived, and of the 20 odd players there, 8 had Space Wolves! After a while, I put my army on hold, and started collecting the new flashy Daemon Hunters that were about to hit the shelves...

As time went on, and i changed jobs and got married, i stopped gaming (not for my wifes doing either, im one of those lucky ones who married a gamer). Most of the kids i had played against had moved out of my country town, off to uni and so forth. Out of the blue, in January 2008, one of my old opponents contacted me, to see if i wanted to play a few games. As you can probably imagine... this got me fully hooked :) The rumours were thick of a new Space Wolves codex and fig's, so i decided to hold off on them and work on a fluffy Raven Guard Army.

With the new Codex released last year, I dug out all i had Wolves wise, and set about building an entire Great Company. Apart from the name similarity, i decided on Bran Redmaw for his love of Wulfen and tactics. The description in the codex gave me a clear picture of what i wanted to do. A vicious, loud fontal attack force, and the bulk of the company to lay ambush. With this, i set out to make some purchases and develop what i already had!

Its been almost a year now, and ive slowly been plodding away. Ive shared some pics on other forums, but this is one that im usually always on, so i thought i'd start a bit of a log here to get some feedback from those more interested in the goings on of the sons of Russ. Anyho, pictures of whats on the go, and been dont already!

I wanted to make bikes like ski-doo's, but failed :P What i did come up with, bikes with chain wheels, worked well enough though :)

A Terminus Ultra. This will be my flag ship of the company.

I scored a couple boxes of the new wolves packs for (last) Christmas, and have been using these to update all the old miniatures. Basically, when mixing old and new stuff to make it go further, my general rule was this:

1. If the model was holding a bolter to its chest, i used a standard marine chest

2. If i used a standard marine chest, then it got new Space Wolf legs/shoulder pads/back pack

3. If the model had bolter/bolt pistol and CC weapon, i used a Space Wolf chest, but standard marine legs.

For example:

My Long Fangs. I used 2 AoBR models in this squad. I added the wolf tail head and a wold tail to the ML of the missle guys. I used an AoBR Termie, adding a Wolf Pelt from a chaos marauder box, a wolf tail, the wolf skill to the top of the storm bolter. I then also chopped the sword off, and replaced it with the sword hand from the Space Wolf Box. Both conversions were simple and effective i think.

The scouts. I have a few of the old scouts, but i really didnt like the look of thier heads or weapons. Some side cutter/dremel work, and some bits from the space wolf sprue's, and i think they actually look better than the new plastic scouts.

I also finished converting up my Swift Claw attack bike. I was trying ot create a model that felt right for a Blood Claw, like he was about to leap into a fight the second the bike stopped moving. As im also using snow to base my marines, i created a sled, which fitted the look i was after perfectly.

A rune priest, also to count as Njal.

A converted dread:

Thanks for the feedback folks, it certainly helps on the motivation side of things :D

The grey was pretty easy. Over a black undercoat, i gave a solid coat of slightly watered down Astronomican Grey foundation paint. When dry, i gave the model a wash of 1:1 water and Badab black. After that, i did a dry brush of Vallejo Game colour 'Stonewal Grey', which is basically the same as Fortress Grey.

Forgive me B&C, for I have sinned, it has been, like, for eva since my last update.

Real life snuck up on me, and dragged me away (things like being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and needing a complete lifestyle overhaul will do that to you). I had finished up this stuff in line with the painting challenge, but hadnt had a chance to take some photo's.

I have started to write a bit of a back story and name each model, but i'll save that for a future post :D

Thanks for the feedback guys, certainly helps with the motivation!

After i posted in the thread about the grass tufts I ended up getting the legs done. Took me several hours (amongst keeping my kids alive) to put magnets in the arms and on the banner pole, so maybe tomorrow i'll get some more painting done

I am so impressed by your snowmobiles, such a good idea and really adds character to the army. Only criticism I'd have is that I'd like to see more snow on the bases of them, but obviously its all down to personal preference.

I do also like seeing your venerable dreadnought, I bought one of these yesterday and I have seen many around, so its nice to see how you've painted it

Rumors from IA11 suggest the featured company will be Bran Redmaws and that he may get a mini. Save up some cash! :P

Oh I'm gonna be spending so much money if this is true!!! Where is this coming from if you don't mind?

Thanks for the comments guys, i have finished lal but the banner, so may chuck another photo up later today

Totally agree! I was using GW snow, and even after 3 layers it still looked thin, so i gave up on the snow for now. Plan is to wait untill i have a heap of models ready, then mix a big batch of the bi-carb/pva mix and do them all at once.

Yep its basically confirmed after the Forge world open day. There's plenty of stuff around the traps, but a few things that i have found concerning 'us'.:

Few months off yet, still finalising the fluff at the beginning. Focuses on Eldar, with some guard and a tiny smidge of Wolves

Only thing I remember for IA11 is that the Space Wolves are Bran Redmaw's great company.

Bran has 2 Profiles one as a Marine and one for when he goes all Wulfen on your *** - if you roll a 4 or less at the start of the SW turn.

Because of this the only unit type he can join is Fenrsian Wolf packs.

Oh and all Grey Hunters in his army may infiltrate and "Behind Enemy Lines" just like wolf Scouts.

Here was the comment from warseer.

SW – Redmaws company – models limited to characters - possibly two versions of Redmaw I’d guess as he turns into a wulfen on a total of less that 5 based on the roll of a D6 and his remaining wounds. May have some company shoulder pads etc but they haven’t started on the models yet. Some very nice new artwork in the book for SW.

Liking your stuff, Redmaw is my second favourite Lord. :)

See, this sounds more fitting for Morkai's company, I'll wait until someone here has the book in hand (or myself :)).
