Death Co #'s in LR

I was debating how many Death Co. + 1 Chap in my LR:R to place. There are 2 sets I was planning to do this. Both which will probably yield the same amount of kills to the "key kill squad" I want to destroy of my opponents.

Set1-

LR:R

1x Chaplain or Reclusiarch (Infernus Pistol)

5x Death Co. (1PF, 4 PW, 1 Infernus Pistol)

Set2-

LR:R

1x Chaplain or Reclusiarch (Infernus Pistol)

10x Death Co. (1PF, 3-4 PW, 1 Infernus Pistol)

My reasoning for Set1 is that I don't need all those extra points/bodies...with the ability to reroll hits and wounds I almost 99% of the time overkill whatever I want to kill. 10x DC would without a doubt be overkill by so much. Yes they will have more bodies when they get shot at but if the LR get's popped and their walking across the field all Raged up aren't they considered dead anyways...

yeah, either way you only need 1 pwrfist and 2-3 pwr weapons in your death company.. the way ive seen from my experience with death CO in my LRC, is that if you point them at an enemy unit, its going to die unless poor dice rolls say otherwize.. you might as well have alot of madmen just in case they happen to get into 2-3 combats. A 5 man death Company is really only reliable for 1 combat no matter how you equip them.. ppl target these guys thats for sure

The problem is they are too good. You don't want to sink soany points into something that can be killed by a pie plate fr a vindi or a battery of plasma cannon after it wipes out the unit it charged in the blink of an eye.

If you have the points for such a unit you would be better served going for a 6 man squad with 3 PWs and a Thunder Hammer alongside an Elite Chaplain in a Land Raider. This unit will still defeat most enemies it charges but will do so in 2 turns and leave you less vulnerable to shooting. The Elite Chaplain strikes at i4 and this means that his Power Weapon attacks cannot be stacked with the other DC marines losing you extra kills.

You will then have the points left for a 5 man Assault squad in a Razor to hold the ground your DC just won for you or pile in and win the combat if your dice rolling goes south.

This sums up my reasoning pretty much exactly. DC with a Chaplain are "too good" at what they do. It's hard to argue that you would want to win combat on your first round. You usually don't want to win it till your opp turn.

With that said if you have 10 DC and chap and win combat, they get pie plated or a lot of shots into them killing them off possibly but you have more bodies to absorb the shots. If you have 5-6 you get pie plated, you lose less...

As far as killyness a group of 5-6 DC with PW + Chap and a group of 10 DC with PW + Chap will probably kill most group of 10 man whatever inf they strike first...

I'd rather overkill armour than underkill it. I'd rather be able to multi-charge than not. I'd rather be able to push a whole flank than only be able to stab it.

One can shape a charge (by back-stretching the unit during move(esp)/disembarkation phase) when one has excess models to limit overkill, ya know.

While overkill can suck, it's not always guaranteed and larger units, while having less cover options, have a greater threat footprint.

By the way, should you care for SRs, Lemmie and a foot DC unit one would stick normally in a LR works... and you can add a dread. A libby dread with SoS maybe. No IC rule for Lemmie is nice and abusable.

This is my thinking as well, DC in a LRC is alot of points and starts leaning toward rock lists..."1 Land Raider , Land Raider Cursader does not a good list make..." The more I think about and read about the DC, the more I think they could and should be treated almost like an Honour Gaurd for a Chaplin. 3-4 well armed DC w/ a chappy is still realtivly low on the point cost, it puts DC on the table for the fear factor, and makes one hard hitting little unit that is not going to be the demise of your army if it suffers from poor rolls, kiteing, or some other such thing. I have really been thinking about running one squad of these guys, just like that, and see what happens.
