CKO
I have read the DIY Guide and I have some questions. When a chapter is founded marines from another chapter come and help, but what exactly do they do? Will someone tell me the theme of their IA before I read it, so I can get a better understanding of IAs themes? Shinzaren
These seem to be two very different questions, and I'll try to answer as best that I can, though others might be better at it. 1.) The Training Cadre is just that. Its a group of veterans that oversees the development of a new chapter. The first batch of initiates is chosen, the gene-seed is implanted, and the Marines are created. The Training Cadre oversees all these things. Once the initiates are able to be trained, the Cadre drills them in the ways of marine-hood, teaching them how to fight, why to fight, etc etc. Eventually they become full marines and the cadre becomes their first commanders, leading them into battle. Years pass and the initiates are now veteran marines in their own right, able to lead, command, and teach. At this point the training cadre either returns to their own Chapter and rejoins their brothers, or stays, and joins the new marines in their chapter, forever relinquishing their old life and ranks. 2.) As to the Theme of an IA, each is different. For my Sons of Lightning, I chose to focus on hating Eldar, and developed the chapter from there. But you may focus on battling Traitors, making a stealthy chapter, siege specialists, or one of a thousand other things. You just pick your theme, and then build the chapter and the IA around that. CKO
I have read your IA before and see how your theme played a role in certain areas. Are you revising it? I remember it having more in it something to do with the chapter master writing a strategic guide. Shinzaren
Oh haha, yeah. TOTAL revision. I realized turning away from the Codex and suddenly doing amazing didn't make much sense, nor did 8ft tall killing machines being stealthy :D Completely rewritten haha. Anywho, that was my idea of a theme, I dunno if it's the right one though. I think everyone's is different. Just find one that works for you and roll with it. It could be good, or it could be bad, like my first theme of stealthy non-Codex marines haha. Octavulg
That, and Chapter themes can end up changing a LOT as time goes on. IIRC, the Ice Lords started as an exercise in having lots of Terminator Armor and explaining the combined DA and SW iconography. I'm not sure exactly what happened after that... But I do know that what I ended up with wasn't what I had intended when I started out. Ecritter
The Octaguide (see Octavulg's sig) and the Guide to DIYing link can be most helpful in making your chapter. As for theme and how we come up with the ideas, I think each of us have their own ways of working. Sometimes I find a picture and build my idea around that .... others I just have a weird (ask anyone I have weird ideas) and go from there. For example, the newest chapter I'm working on are Neo-Nazi Spartans with a fire fetish. Weird idea to say the least, and I considered it for weeks, putting it together slowly before I even bagan to put it down on paper. I hope that helps a little. Lysimachus
One thing that can help when working on your Chapter is to try and sum up their character very simply, perhaps even in one word, and then keep that word in your head as you are working on the IA/IT. This then helps to keep that sense of focus in the finished article. As an example, to sum up my various Chapters: Stormbringers - efficient Emperor's Blade - devout Guardians of Paralios/Knights of the Black Rose - arrogant Iron Gods - amoral Edit: I should say I don't think this is really my idea, I think something along these lines was said by the great Commissar Molotov (I think...)
