Sternguard / Veteran Rhino with Extra Armour WIP

Recommended Posts

Hello Brothers,

I've always managed to churn out idea's using only my own inspiration and enthusiasm but this time I thought I'd open up to the great mind of B&C to get some tips. After seeing some awesome Sternguard at Games Day I decided I had to have some. BUT I wanted them in a pimped-out Rhino with all the upgrades. I really want to give their transport a Veteran feel.

I definitely wanted the Crux on the top hatch and decided to model the 2 storm bolters as one chunky weapon. I also wanted extra armour to make it look beefier but without losing the striking lines of the vehicle too much. This is what I've come up with so far:

I'm going to add more plates and rivets to break up the flat spaces, and green stuff the gaps. What do you guys think? Any other idea's I could incorporate? I'd only consider myself a 'novice' converter and 1mm plasitcard is already quite a pain to work with (as you can see from the details on the front slopes).

Thanks, I'm really pleased with the top Crux. I do need to add a dozer blade but I'm finding it hard to come up with something. The one in the box isn't great and none of the other GW one's seem to fit right. Might have to make one out of plasticard but I'm not sure my skills are up to the job! Any idea's?

Hello The Black Watch,

Nice progress you've got there on the Rhino. Are we going to see the squad it's going to transport?

If you are really planning on putting a dozerblade on it you can always try to plunder an Imperial Guard tank. They are not too big and fit quite nice on a Rhino.

Good luck!

I thought about that but I want my Rhino to appear 'fast'. The dozer blade is to deflect objects and I'm not sure the big bulldozer-type one's would fit in with that.

make the dozer blade appear like an arrowhead perhaps? (or as is space marine one - a speartip)

Like the big wedge you put on a train in case there are cows on the track?

thomas the tank enging flashback...

not exactly what i was thinking but that would be cool could make it look like a knights visor or summit

:P Same reaction here! Would look very nice though if it's not bright blue. :) What you've done thus far puts my sternguard Rhino/Raxorback to shame! Good work!

You will get to see the squad when they are finished too. Thanks for the input, I've tried a few things and I have to say the 'Arrow' looks good. Here are some more up to date and better pics (including close-up of the storm bolter as requested).

Well I've been hard at work and can give you some new pictures of the almost-finished beast. Let me say one thing - my dedication has never been so tested as it was when doing all those rivets. So fiddly!

Anyway, enjoy...

Thank-you for all the nice comments! I only hope my painting can do it justice.

please tell me how you made that storm bolter!!! its awesome

Easy! I got 2 stormbolters and cut the ammo-mag off one and did a little trimming so they fit together. That way they look as though they are sharing one mag. Then put them on their side and the bottom fits pretty well on one of the Rhino hatches. Then I simply added the targeter from a Razorback turret as well as part of the ammo-feed for a heavy bolter. Easy as that really! B)
