New to SW with my Thoughts...

So, I am so new to Space Wolves that I don't even have a model yet. I learned my lesson twice when I bought my first army (Gray Knights) and second army (Eldar) just by buying what I liked the look of. I wised up and made a list before I made my third army (Chaos Space Marines) and that list turned out for the best. Now, I am looking at the Space Wolves and saying "Hey, I love that play style and their powers"

I have a series of questions/comments about the Space Wolves, just as more information for myself before I go and buy.

When I played against Space Wolves for the first time with my Gray Knights, I had to play against an all infantry list! I didn't know how to play against that! but I loved the idea of it. My goal is to make as quick of an army with as little mech as possible. Also, I really want to have at least 2 full units of SkyClaw Assault Marines. I know, their profile isn't spectacular, but the speed of them gives them a huge "x" factor to my opponent. Plus, I love the models and have always wanted to field 20+ jump marines (But GK doesn't have jetpacks --- Yet [let's hope!]).

As I was looking through the codex and reading up on all of the models, I started to make a list... This is list is weak... at best... but hear me out and let me know what you think. This is more of a loose idea than a list..

First off, my number one rule is to have 3 troop choices in anything up to 1500 points. so I would put in three fodder troops, one in a rhino. To me, it didn't really matter which type of troops I had, they were basically there for holding/capping points, all of my other troops would be support for them. I think the Grey Hunters would be best because they wouldn't have the slight off-chance to be pulled off of the control point because of "Headstrong". Again, one of these would be in a rolling coffin to get them to the farthest objective.

I also noticed the Long Fangs. These guys seem DEADLY! I noticed a lot of lists gave them 5 missile Launchers. I really hate missile launchers. Yes, out of 5, I would hope that 2+ would not scatter, but I would rather have 5 chances with S9 AP2 weaponry. I'm talking 5 Lascannons! Oh, did I mention, I was thinking of having two of these groups? one dropped in a great position in a drop pod first turn? Yes, 10 lascannons on the table will take out tanks and will be able to take out around 1/4 of any regular squad... instakill! That's what makes me like these guys.

After that, I am having a hard time picking HQ's. What I was thinking is to have two Rune Priests, both with Jetpacks and attached to the Skyclaw packs. Then I would give them all the good stuff...

Basically, I would have 49 infantry units on the table in a 1500 point game. with one Rhino and one drop pod.

Can someone give me pro's and con's of my ideas? I don't want to make this army list anything like I already have... GK's in LR's and 3 long lasting troops with a couple big guns for my CSM.

I would suggest to start with grey hunter, and long fangs their the best. However I wouldn't give all your long fangs lascanons. I my self don't like long fangs having a bunch of missle launchers so I run a squad of 2 lascannons, 1 hb, 1 ml, 1, pc. Don't forget they can split their fire so you can fire at 2 different units and if you have a ton of lascannons their a ton of points. If you want a fast hq you could always use a lord on a thunder wolf with a unit of fenris wolves or a unit of thund wolf cav. And if you are worried about bc headstrong you take a wolf guard squad leader or an ic in the squad I always take a wolf guard squad leader in my blood claw units or my grey hunters. Good luck starting your space wolf army and welcome to the fang

Thank you for the reply!

I'm going to look into the Wolf Guard, definitely. I didn't realize they count as being a "leader" in their pack. Do the Wolf Guard have to start out in a group together, then first turn, split up? or can they deploy with their respective unit?

I see what you're saying about all of the lascannons. Generally when I play DH, I like to have 2.5 Twin Linked lascannon shots (on average) per turn. That is split between 2-3 Land Raiders with TLLC. I think I would drop the LC's down to 3 per squad (or 2 in one squad and 3 in the other - giving me 5-6 LC shots, averaging 2.5-3 shots per turn) and have two ML's or one ML and one PC to mix it up a bit.

Any thoughts on that?

Does this list seem viable?

You buy them as their own unit then prior to deployment you put them in the squads you want. This is explained in the army list section what squads you can put them in. If I remember right you can't put them in sky claws you would have to use an IC.

Here is what I suggest, you said you have some models right, so buy the codex and build a list on paper that matches your play style then post the list in the army list section of Space Wolves. Once you get the nod from some long fangs that you have a solid list, play test it using some of the models you already own for counts as models. Once your sold on the list then you know exactly what to buy.

Not that there is any bad units in the space wolf codex, but you don't want to duplicate a unit that does have some meat to it.

Vrox.
