Saga of Völund Roughtooth

So a year after the 5th edition re-release, I've finally found the time to build and paint a 3rd Space wolf force. I bought most of the models I'm using at launch and I've got a lot of points already, something like 6.5 - 8K. I've probably wrote something like 50 lists looking for the right inspiration to get me out of mood, and I think I've finally found what I'm looking for, somewhere between theme and competitive, something I've found easy with fantasy but hard to do in 40k. So here is the list I plan on finishing it in about 30 days, and once I figure out why my camera won't connect to my computer I'll start posting pics. Its going to be done as Erik Morkai's Great Company, mainly because I love his fluff, its going to be based on Erik's aplha strike team, so mech, with biker support.

1850

Wolf Lord ; Völund Roughtooth

Frost Blade, Storm shield

Runic Armour

Wolf Tooth Necklace, two Fenrisian Wolves

Thunder Wolf Mount

Saga of the Bear (I don't really think I need this, but it fits the idea of the character and hence is there)

Rune Priest

Master of Runes; Storm Caller, Living Lightning

Chooser of the Slain

Saga of the Beastslayer

5 Wolf Gaurd

2 x Thunder hammer, combi-melta, melta bombs

1 x Power fist, Space Marine Bike, melta bombs

2x Combi-plasma

8 Grey hunters

Meltagun

Wolf Standard

Rhino

extra armour

*Rune Priest goes here + Thunder hammer wolf gaurd

9 Grey hunters

Meltagun

Power Weapon

Wolf Standard

Rhino

extra armour

2x 5 Grey hunters

Plasmagun

Razorback

Las/plas

extra armour

4 Swiftclaw Bikers

meltagun

Attack Bike

Multi-melta

Land Raider

extra armour

Essential the plan is to use the Raider as a mobile building and base of opperations, using it to set up firing lines, and draw fire from the much more vulnerable rhinos and razorbacks. Using the bikes in a very similar fashion to littlebitz tactica, which is a very good read. I have similar thoughts on the ThunderLord, using the few obvious threats the lord, the raider and the bikes to draw attention from my Grey hunters.

Pics to Follow, scouts honour.

Sounds like a great plan really. I'm not a space wolf player (yet) so I'm not able to offer much advice on your list. However, I'm really looking forward to see some pictures once you get the camera situation sorted out. 'Till then, the best of luck!

So the camera is off to the manufacturer which is going to push back my start date. I must be honest and say that have painted the majority of 5 GH in anticipation of the camera being fixed on site...

On the army list, I was considering dropping the two wolves all together. My thinking is that its going to take more points to kill the lord than he's worth. And if they do "kill" him, the rest of my army hasn't had to wade through a torrent of fire to get there. If I'm playing well, the longer the game goes on the less pressure the Thunderlord will be under.

I'm not really sure where I can get the points to get a full squard of Wolves though.

You should drop the 2 wolves and add a unit of wolves cause that lord is going to get shoot to he'll if u don't and will die before he ever reaches your enemy. I just started using a lord on TW and if I didn't take a unit of wolves with him he never would of made it through turn one.

So I've re-jigged the army list. I've built my characters, and two squads minus the wolf standards. I just need to build the long fangs, swift claws, 2 smaller grey hunters, and some wolf gaurd. Here is the new list.

Wolf Lord

Storm Shield, Thunder hammer

Wolf Tooth Necklace, Runic Armour

Thunder Wolf Mount

Saga of the Bear

Rune Priest

Storm caller, Living lightning

Chooser of the slain, Wolf tooth Necklace

Saga of the Beastslayer

5 Wolf Gaurd

2x Thunder hammer, combi-melta,

1x Combi-plasma, power weapon

1x Power fist, Space marine bike

1x Terminator armour, CML

5 Wolf scouts

2x bolters

1x meltagun

9 Grey Hunters

meltagun

MofTheW

Wolf Standard

Rhino

extra armour

8 Grey Hunters

meltagun

Wolf Standard

Rhino

extra armour

6 Grey hunters

meltagun

Razorback

Plas/las

extra armour

5 Grey Hunters

meltagun

Razorback

Plas/Las

extra armour

3 Swiftclaws

meltagun

powerfist

Attackbike

multi-melta

6 Fenrisian Wolves

6 Long Fangs

2x Heavy Bolters

3x Missile Launchers

Pack leader

It comes to 1848. So let me know what you think. I should be getting my camera tonight after I finish my shift. I'll post my some pictures hopefully tonight.

Is it 3 swiftclaws and an attack bike equaling a 4 man squad not including the pack leader? or is it 2 swiftclaws and the attack bike numbering 3 models total not including the pack leader? I think the min squad size is 3 bikers before you add the attack bike.

Also I'm not a huge fan of saga of the beastslayer on my runepriest. I try not to get into HTH with big baddies with him if I can help it and LL really is a wickedly awesome Autocannon that I use to pop vehicles from anywhere. I've had relatively poor luck actually doing anything significant vs anything with an armor save. But, these are my own personal experiences and many based on my relationship with my dice :D

I really like the idea of this list. It has a lot of speed and big threats at that.

However as previously mentioned, your TL will be shot to pieces. With no other protection than a 2+/3++ (dont get me wrong, that is wonderful), he can still be killed with mass wounds and some bad rolling. If you attach a pack of FenWolves, even a pack of 5, it increases his odds of survivability by a lot.

With those wolves, you can chooose to allocate attacks to your TL to maximize his 2+/3++ save until you are safe with it. Then just allocate them to the 5 wound buffer around him.

Lets face it, 5 wolves only runs you 40pts. Those points could be found in wargear alone in your list.

Also I'm not a huge fan of Extra Armor on anything but my dreads and landraiders. 1) because i always want my dread moving forward to get in cc. 2) the landraider can always shoot one weapon, so it makes sense to let it always move.

Now on rhinos, they usually only see two turns of movement for me; Turn 1: 12" forward and pop smoke. Turn 2: 12" forward disembark and bolter them to pieces. The extra armor is nice on them, but pricey and it only helps on a die roll of 2. That is a low chance.

Also, I doubt the opponent will be shooting at your rhinos (maybe your rzorbacks) if you are fielding a landraider and a TWC.

So I've got the basis of my army list down a Rune Priest, 30 GH with WG leaders in Rhinos.

Now I'm looking to decide what I want in support either:

a)

Thunderlord

2 Heavy bolter multimelta land speeders

1 pack of 4x ML long fangs with CML WG

3 bikes and multimelta attack bike, with fist and WG with fist

;)

Frostblade thunder lord

2 x Heavy Bolter Multimelta Speeders

2 x 2 ML, 2HB long fang packs (I with CML leader other with ablative wound)

2 x Thunder wolves with Thunder hammer

I should have some pics of my first squad nearing completion tomorrow morning.

  • 3 weeks later...

So as I've been painting I've been playinga few games here and there. The more I've played the more changes I made here and there. Here is the new list.

WGBL ( 230 )

Frost Blade, Storm Shield

Wolftooth necklace, melta bombs, wolf tail talisman

Thunderwolf Mount

2x Fenrisan wolves

Saga of the Beastslayer

Rune Priest ( 110 )

Chooser of the slain

Living lightning, Murderous Hurrican

9 Grey Hunters (263)

Meltagun

Power weapon

Wolf standard

Rhino

extra armour

Wg - Thunder hammer, combi-melta

9 Grey Hunters (263)

Meltagun

Power weapon

Wolf standard

Rhino

extra armour

Wg - Thunder hammer, combi-melta

9 Grey Hunters (258)

Meltagun

Power weapon

Wolf standard

Rhino

extra armour

Wg - Power fist, combi-melta

5 Fenrisan Wolves ( 40 )

2 Land Speeders ( 140 )

Heavy Bolters, Multimelta

2 Thunderwolf Cavalry ( 160 )

Storm Shield

Thunder Hammer

5 Long Fangs ( 145 )

2 Missile Launchers

2 Heavy bolters

Razorback

6 Long Fangs ( 130 )

3 Missile Launchers

2 Heavy Bolter

So this list is 1750 just because my buds are aiming for that point level.

I'm posting from my phone, but I should have the almost complete third squad tonight or tomorrow morning.

But, these are my own personal experiences and many based on my relationship with my dice

I am the complete opposite!

Saga of the Beastslayer is essential for the role that my Rune Priest plays, and that is not for hth. In conjunction with a Chooser, against MC, you are almost guaranteed to hit. Being str7, you will be placing wounds on those MC that force saves and just like terminators and massed fire, enough shots cause failed saves.

Of course LL has it's other great uses for popping Rhinos and Razorbacks and the new DE stuff.
