The Tyrant's Legion (update 10-28)

We are Legion

Recommended Posts

Heya everyone, I've embarked upon a project, and as long as I can find a decent working camera I'll be filling this thread with the Astral Claws and the auxilia from the Tyrant's legion list.

I've been a fan of Astral Claws/red corsairs since the days of second edition, where Huron allowed a chaos army to have easy access to regular space marine wargear. Unfortunately third edition came and the Red corsairs I had started to build were nixed in favor of a viable chaos army for that edition.

With the Badab war books from Forgeworld, I've decided to revisit the Astral Claws. So stay tuned, pics soon!

There is really no point in posting a topic about something you're going to do and that pictures are on the way. You should just wait and post the topic when you actually do have the pictures. This forum is for giving artistic advice on models. All you're saying is that you wanted to do Astral Claws, decided not to awhile ago, and now you're getting books for it to start them.

My apologies, Alpha.

If this is the wrong section for a forum blog about a WIP army, please tell me where I should go.

In the meantime, here's a picture of the guardsmen I have to strip and repaint.

(also a test of my camera and a dusting off of my photobucket account)

well, strike two it seems, lets see if I can get it right with a third post.

Lugft Huron!

Now, I need some feedback, my overall goal for the look of the army is to have a look that on the outside is resplendent, beautiful, with amazing iconography... yet underneath it all is something much more sinister (which will work fine until I start to make my corpse collector unit).

The idea is that there will be that imperial aquila rusted and half-forgotten in the gravel, accompanied by a skull (perhaps two, now that I've started positioning them).

Problem is that I'm not certain how to pull that off on the base... Should I glue down the aquila and then put on the sand? or would it look better to angle the aquila up slightly so it is partially buried? (this is my first real adventure in basing, by the way).

third one is a winner! fantastic model, looks like a lot of fun! With the base, id put down a layer of green stuff (or any putty) and push the aquila into it how ever you want. Then it will look at the aquila is under the sand, because it is!

Personally id have it flat - might look like its attached to a floor or something.

cheers,

Replica

Huron deceived his alies into thinking that the Imperium had abandoned the Emperor's vision (maybe it has :D). I think simple things like the rusting Aquila and a couple of skulls would help maintain Huron's illusion while suggesting a darker theme. I would be very careful about making you forces to chaosy. Although in 'the trial of the mantis warriors' it mentions the Astral claws slide into chaos the FW Huron model is clearly a very early Badab war representation, as he still wears the Aquila.

Really looking forward to this project. I can't wate to see you add more FW to your force, very cool :D

  • 2 weeks later...

Sorry for the slow updates, was hoping I'd have more done by now. Retail work and college classes haven't been kind to me for time.

Here's progress on Huron:

I think the base turned out quite well model-wise... not sure the corrosion effect on the aquila looks QUITE right... might have to give the gold a light highlight of mithril silver.

Skulls worked out well, as soon as I find my bottle of Bleached Bone I'll give them a final highlight, still need to give the rock and base a very light dusting of codex grey, I think.

The man himself needs some work still, obviously, and I've not even gotten anything but the blue base coat on his banner.

I've not wanted to paint a model this badly in forever.

Here's Updates on Huron, and a problem has developed.

And here's the problem: How do you people do lettering on something like this:

I'm not sure if I want to write his name on it as is on the Forgeworld paint-up of the model, or if I want to write something latin.

Also: a taste of the upcoming projects. I plan on converting both the other Astral Claws characters, as well as filling out the units of the Tyrant's legion army list in the Badab book.

However, since guardsmen models aren't allowed, I guess I'll have to stick to the space marine units inside the list (maybe I can sneak in some inducted imperial navy from the list <.<... >.>... ).

Upcoming conversions: Armanneus Valthex, Captain Corien Sumatris, Corpse Collector apothecary w/ vivisectionist servitors.

So perhaps it is just me but is there a way you can get some better lighting? The pictures just seem really dark. Also what is the color scheme for the Astral Claws? As I've only seen the one from when they were Tiger Claws and had an orange and black paint scheme.

In any case I hope to see more. I like what you did with the Aquila and the skull, maybe add a few more to it if it is not deemed to late.

I'll work on the lighting

I kinda wanna leave the base alone now... I think it worked out pretty well with two skulls, I'll get a closer shot of the finished base for you all.

Color Scheme for Badab War Astral claws is silver armor, blue shoulders, and green eyepieces.

Basic paints I'll be using for the astral claws themselves will be chainmail, and Mordian blue/Enchanted Blue. Burnished gold for the gold parts, and the little bit of shading I've got on him is from blackwash, brown wash and flesh wash.
