Hi guys

I need some advice on a chapter name. I'm not looking for the "building blocks" of a novel. I just want a Chapter name that sounds cool and has a quick and detailed history to it, thats all.

Anyway, fluff is that the chapter is similar to the legion of the damned, except that when they arrive, the come in force and they represent the wrath of dead marines from over the millenia since the Heresy (not literally, but i was thinking that they would be Chaplain heavy or something because of this). Afterwards, instead of vanishing, they honour the fallen marines by burning their corpses and then leaving to fight other battles, recruiting as they go (Fleet based, like BT).

 

Another idea is that the are a Codex Successor (ie not Blood Angels, Dark Angels, Black Templar's or Space Wolves), but they have a very large Chapter at a high recruitment rate, and excel at wars of atrition against the Ork and Tyranid menace.

One name that I had in mind for the LotD fluff was the "Sons of Vengeance", or something along those lines.

Any help would be greatly appreciated in advance.

Hnn, okay, I'm gonna be rough, but this is the third "I can't think of a name" thread in a short interval that I've seen up. Look at the other two threads for some ideas and if that fails read some of the help articles (which advise against this kind of thread) and play around with the name generator. There's no excuse for laziness and I'll not tolerate it now since I'm out of names and the novelty of helping people with chapter names has worn off.

 

((that last sentence is supposed to sound more sarcastic than irritated, btw))

Erm... You do know that the three things you have asked for there are a bit contradictory dont you? Quick history or a detailed history - one or the other. And "just a chapter name" is neither of those. How about give us a clue for which codex you want to use?

Apparently I dont go into enough detail when saying something doesnt work, so here goes:

Similar to the Legion of the Damned in what way? Are they ghosts? Are they damned marines cursed to fight forever? Why do they recruit then? The LotD dont recruit... Are you using normal marine rules, or are you wanting an army of 3++ save marines who DS everywhere and mysteriously leave no physical trace of their passing except for the bodies of their slain enemies?

Do you want them to be a chaplain heavy force then? Because this makes about as much sense as saying that marines wear power armour, so I want to have a chapter master riding in a Leman Russ Battletank. What do you envisage by a chpalain heavy army? Because you're looking at 2 chaplains on the table, and thats no more chaplain-heavy than any other marine chapter (apart from BA's who can have up to 6 chaplains on the board - 2 reclusiarch HQ's, 3 Chaplain Elites and Lemartes in the DC).

So not like LotD then. At all. I assume that they stop to harvest geneseed before they burn the bodies? Are the bodies they burn their own marines or do they happily burn other chapters dead marines as well? What might the other chapters think of this? Do they harvest their geneseed as well? Do they return the geneseed or do they keep it to use for themselves?

Bad idea, in my opinnion. War of attrition is what the Imperial guard are for. A marine chapter with a high recruitment rate and large size will attract inquisition trouble like flies on dog mess. War of attrition against Orks will only ever end with the orks winning (due to their odd biology) and no-one wins a war of attrition against Nids, you have (even if you are the biggest chapter in existance) maybe 7,000 marines - against Nids who will have millions of killer organisms. And if you have such a high recruitment rate permanently and dont end up being so massive that you break the rules of the Codex Astartes regarding size (and thus become a threat to the Imperium that will get slapped down hard) then your chapter masters must be a bunch of military incompetants who would be summararily executed for squandering the might of a marine chapter. Big chapters are a bad idea for a DIY in almost every instance I've seen them done (not that I can actually remember one being done well, but I'm not ruling out the possibility that there might be one or two somewhere).

 

 

How about using a chapter like the Iron Knights? Or even the Exorcists? (pg 27 of C:SM) Two names, sound reasonably 'cool', simple paint scheme, bit of fluff/backstory, off the shelf and yours for nowt.

Well, when i ment that they were similar to the LotD, I meant that they would surprise the opponent by coming and hitting them hard when they least expected it, via massive drop strike, Thunderhawk JP assualt, etc. That was what i meant that they were similar to the LotD.

Also, when i meant "detailed" (And I know that this is my fault) i meant just something that i could tell someone in about a miniute, but is good enough to be intersting for that minute in time.

And yes, they do harvest the gene seed

I was thinking that it would be Raven Guard possibly. I'm not looking at Shrike based armies, just fluff wise.

And @ Leonidas, i want my own chapter to create, not one of the ones in the codex.

And again, this is more just looking for a name than for a proper story. Not very good at making up good names, and want just a few tips on name creation. (the name creator doesn't really suit me, and it is quite frustrating in my opinion since i'm sitting there for like half an hour just looking for a decent name. Just in case anyone tells me about it again)

Anything that can give me 'Sanguinary Bees' as a chapter name is surely fantastic. <_<

 

What sort of name would you consider a decent name?

Sadly, we at the Liber can't read minds (yet), and your previous posts are a bit... vague on the subject. Throw us an example or two to work with - they don't have to be great - and we'll see what can be done. ^_^

Well, i wouldn't mind something "Chaplainish" (ie GrimDark) but I don't really mind if it's isn't GrimDark. As long as it sound reletivly cool i'll be happy.

A few examples of the top of my head: Sons of Vengeance, Avenging Crusaders, The Brother of Mortality, etc.

Again, just a few off the top of my head and I don't mind if they sound bad and need to change them.

Hence the bionics on most of the Liber veterans. ^_^

 

As far as names, Swords Of Mortality sounds pretty cool, even if the name itself doesn't make much sense.

Also, other possibilities include;

 

Nightblades

Darkblades (both also available as two words :) )

Sons of Iron

Banishers

 

And I'm sure others can take the grimdark theming and run with it from here.

Swords of Mortality seems...off? Perhaps, Sword of (IM)mortality?

 

How bout: "Chapter of the Grim Darkness"?

Or, "The Grim Darkness"

Or my personal favorite:

"The Planet Rapers"
