2+ and jump pack movement is surely good enough to fly them into favourable combat matchups given the abundance of 4+ and LOS blocking cover available.

yes because all tournaments have full LoS blocking cover . they are not viable for any tournament play[or any place you dont know what the terrain is] because if you end up on a lava board or one of those tables with one or two huge terrain in the middle they are dead. even with FnP and +2sv they still suffer from plasma/melta + they are not cheap.

I suppose ALL tournaments don't, but mine do. So I wouldn't be so quick to say they're not viable for any tournament play.

Even on the lava boards though you should be able to screen for 4+ cover, which is far more useful than FnP for these guys. It's a rare weapon that ignores cover/also has AP2, whereas all AP2 ignores FNP anyway. Plasma and Melta are short ranged, and these guys obviously have an 18" threat range.

Actually given the dominant choice for longer ranged heavy weaponry in the current meta is missle launchers (zzz long fangs) which plays into these guys hands.

2+/4++ vs shooting is plenty enough, they're 200 points a unit after all, not 400.

Actually I know what it is - you can't spam them and make an effective army, sadly for Dante's sake. So obviously just 1 unit of them sucks.

So I wouldn't be so quick to say they're not viable for any tournament play.

ok . I dont know from where you are . but lets say if a random dude from hollland wants to go to a GT tournament in italy , does he test and build his army thinking "damn I hope those guys in italy have more terrain then normaly tournaments have in europe or those SG wont work too well" or does he think "lets build the army around the concept of spaming ,maximum power for minimum points and fool proof builds that dont have auto lose match ups"? I think he more offten goes with the second . same happen when you go to a shop/club , smaller tournament . a unit that works only if the orgs somehow organized enough terrain for 20+ tables , doesnt not happen offten . most of the time games played durning tournaments have less terrain [and in some rare cases too much] then games with friends.

its either 24" from a rhino or unlimited range when using a pod or deep strike . If what you say about range was true , then the dominant build in 5th ed after BA dex coming out would be the Jump pack list or some sort of hybrid . only nothing like that happens.

SG are good but for the points you pay the lack of an invulnerable save hurts. You could attach a Librarian with Shield, 5++ is okay but not great.

0b

Sure, but that makes them as good (at range, at least) as Terminators--2+/5++. However, this unit is getting pretty expensive while remaining rather vulnerable to the Vindicators' guns--but then again, this is indeed just as vulnerable as Terminators are, and it's not difficult to argue that these guys are better.

So I wouldn't be so quick to say they're not viable for any tournament play.

Even if you're playing on planet bowling ball, you can use the rest of your army to screen SG for a 4+ cover save. Every other army uses screening as a tactic to give important units cover saves. It doesn't work for SG why?

To Jeske,

I don't think you understand what we are trying to say. You use RHINOS as a screen for cover. My list runs 5 Rhinos, 2 Baals, 3 Preds, Mephiston and a SG that hide behind the vehicle screen of the Baals and Rhinos. All this fits in a 2k list and works very well. With all the other threats and cover the SG will make it into close combat about 90% of time and wreck havoc with Master Crafted Power Weapons.
