Blood Angels vs Tau: Battle Report

Inspired by Black Oranges recent reports, a hunger of something better than Razorback spam, and a need to get away from the wife for a night I found myself headed to my local shop (Cape Fear Games OMG PLUG) here in Wilmington NC.

My forever opponet was my friend John. Me and John work together for the government so we basically talk about 40k half of every other day lately. He was excited to also get back on the battlefield.

We rolled a Auto Draw Capture and Control with a Spearhead Deployment.

I placed my marker roughly 20 inches off the board edge between 3 ruins, he placed his similarly. I did this because of his pesky Kroot!.

Lists were something like this.

Him

HQ Suit +2 suits Plas/Missiles

3 Suits Plas/Missiles

3 Suits Plas/Missiles

10 Pathfiners/with Ride and 3 rail rifles

2 Broadside suits with shield dronesx2

Ionhead

Railhead

Big Group of Kroot +Dogs

Big Group of Kroot + Dogs

Big Group of Kroot + Dogs

Big Group of Kroot + Dogs

He set up in typical castle, IonHead on one side of the “base building and Rail Head on other of the Tau Objective Ruins. 3 of the kroot Groups wrapped up all 4 sides. Broads on the second level peaking out of windows and Pathfinders on second level peeking out of windows. HQ suit group on bottom floor peeking out of windows. He selected 2 of his suit groups for deep striking and reserve/outflanked the last big Kroot Group.

Me

(I understand this list is a bit disjointed, but I am still building so I try and work with what I have.)

Dante

Libby+Jp with Shield and Preferred Enemy

2x Sang Priests with JP's and Power Weaps

Assault Marines X10 Fist and 2x Melta (Gold)

Assault Marines X10 Fist and 2x Melta (silver)

Assault Marines X10 Pwr Weap, Flamer, Melta (ugly)

Vanguard Squad X5 THammer Pwr Weap

BBQ Baal with Hvy Bolters and HK (which I forgot and never fired)

Furioso with Claws and Hvy Flamer +Drop Pod

Tau John has been after me to run this type of DoA list since we started, I was hesitant and even after Black Orange told me about stormravens and how much fun it was I was scared of mishaps and disjointed attacks. But I broke down and wrote it up.

Tau John won the roll for who goes when and told me to set up. I smiled, waved my hand like a wizard and said "tada! I am set up" without moving a model. :wallbash: He sets up and first turn begins.

Turn 1:BA

Drop pod lands on Ion Head side of the board. I hate this thing! If not for FnP it would have eaten me alive for several games. It's target #1 I knew Podding in a dread next to a bundle of Tau railguns would be bad, but I was going to take that damn ION head with me! Melta gun to hit roll! is a 1....*sigh* So I say what the hell, at least I can BBQ some Kroot as I shoot the flamer at the ION head Side armor. Kill 2 kroot and manage to glance the ION head. Get a weapon destroyed! Great Success! Even if my dread dies now 1 problem has been solved!

Turn1:Tau

Greatly angered by his lost cannon TauJohn unleashes the power of the Rail gun on my poor dread. Rail Head fires! Miss. (yay!) BroadSide 1 fires..hit!..damage roll... 2! (cursing from John) BroadSide 2 fires hit! Damage roll...1 (Me:baahaahaaa) in Anger he tries Plasma from his HQ group all fail to do anything. The dread roars in defiance...well I did in his place.

Turn2: BA

Ok lets get this party started. Rolling for reserves. BBQ Baal comes in, Dante's super group (Dante/Libby/Priest 10asm) comes in. Silver Squad comes in. Vanguards (have red thirst Woot) comes in. I place the Vanguards next to the Dread, Really the only place I can put them to be honest. ( In hindsight I could have attacked a Kroot group and protected them next round, but thats what learning games are fort). Dante and friends I place about 13 inches from the Tau Front line, Silver Squad next to them to share FnP. BBQ baal behind the Vang/Dread area. I roll for ugly squad and they don’t show up, I choose not to reroll. I have other plans for them.

In shooting I run the Silver squad to scatter them out and get in FnP range. The Dread doesn't shoot, he wants Kroot blood. The baal moved 12 onto the board and fires on hvy bolter into the far (untouched) kroot killing 1(MEH!).

Dread smashes into the closest kroot group and the vanguard follow. ...Stories will be told about that evil machine...that flung those kroot across the battlefield...The vanguards kill 5ish kroot, the Kroot hounds swing back and manage to kill a marine. The Dread...well TauJohn eventually just told me to stop rolling. Before they go the kroot make a couple of swings at the vang to no effect.

Tau Turn 3:

Kroot Group 4 shows up and flanks onto my objective. Last suit group lands behind Dante and friends, out of rapid fire range. They fire some shots, lose a couple marines mostly from plasma .

Further angered by the Dread and now the vanguard and all of my army on the table minus one squad TauJohn lowers his rail guns again, and rockets, and plasma, and most everything else is fired at my vanguards and the dread. When the dust settles I am minus one Blood Talon and minus 4 more Vangs. Instead of attacking the dread he fires his last railgun at the solo survivor of the vang squad and kills him. This would prove to be a learning experience for my friend.

BA Turn 3:

Dread moves 6 inches towards the ruined base building. TauJohn asks why am I doing this...i point at his suits…”I am going to pull off their arms like insects my friend” “you can’t reach” “dreads move through cover” *frown* Dante and friends open up on closest kroot mob and kill enough to force leadership. They ,obviously witnessing the dreads actions earlier, decide to book out of town and off the table.

Dread master of the universe smashes through a wall and squishes a suit. TauJohn starts to roll attacks. He doesn’t know he is hitting front armor on dreads. He frowns…

Rest of the game is getting fuzzy now so I will speed this up.

I drop my ugly group near my objective.

I try and get my BAAL back to home base but he DS’s a group of suits and smashes it on rear armor missiles and plasma.

Dread kills another suit and consolidates towards the second level. Ends up taking on both the pathfiners and broadsides and stays tied up with them the rest of the game.

I make a mistake and separated one of the two groups (Dante and Silver squad). This left them in the open and without FnP. TauJohn unloaded into them and really shot them up badly. My intent was to make sure I had home controlled, I should have kept up the attack.

Dante and friends made a nifty move and jumped over one of the running suits and got into the last of the kroot. Preferred Enemy, and 3 IC’s equaled a lot of dead kroot.

On my side of the board… Ugly squad took out the last kroot group, and the last of the suits.

However my fatal error was to not work on his vehicles as the game went on. He moved two onto my objective and one over to his. So we had a draw.

But we learned and at this point in our hobby that is all that matters

I liked the DOA style a lot. I learned furioso’s in combat are disgusting against low toughness models. I learned to attack when in doubt. Finally learned to trust your plan. Had I not sent a group back only to have it get shot to hell, I would have most likely won. But a draw with a buddy is just as good as a win.

Thx for reading.

PS: If you see an issue where we handled a rule incorrectly please comment.

good battle report i dont see anything wrong with what you did besides maybe in the turn when you killed 2 kroot and hit the ioncannon. because i'm pretty sure you have to place it in order to hit one target or the other. but nevermind that 2 kroot probably would not have made a difference. other then that it sounded like a good and fun game.

You've got to 'cover as much of the target vehicle as possible.' As long as you follow this rule, anything else under the template is fair game :cuss But intentionally 'clipping' a vehicle whilst the majority of the template falls on another unit is not ok. (pg 29 of the rulebook)

The story of the Dread that got away :)

Well done!

I think Jumper Bloods is a fun army. Is this your first time with the army? I always seem to do poorly the first time I put a list down :cuss

My brother plays Bloods, do you recommend the BBQ + HB Baal? If you do, I might forget to tell him :)

One problem which I think you missed, is the Tau list being illegal. Firewarriors are a 1+ choice, so he needs to have at least one squad of them.

That was what he thought in the past, but a more expericenced player told us different.

He will have to research this.

easy fix tho, the 3 railrifles = 60 points which = 6 fireboys

Yea this was the first time I reserved/DS'ed everything. Partly because I haven't understood the rules that well, and two I was overly concerned with mishaps. 3.5 average scatter is really nothing with a smidge of planning. (least thats how I am thinking).

I put the Heavy Bolters on there just cuz, I made the list in like 15mins in between appointments. Honestly for how the game was going the first couple of rounds I should have brought it in on my side of the board, and DARED him to bring his Kroot near it. I basically overkilled one side of the fight, and undersupported my own objective. I guess the temptation to roast something was too overpowering. In reflection tho, adding the heavy bolters was just "meh". It added some versitility to the thing, allowing me to plink at mobs a couple times but the Baal didn't really affect the game at all, and that was my fault.

Your experienced player told you wrong.

Page 36 of Codex Tau Empire. There's the 1+, which means that for every force organization chart you use, you must have one unit of Fire Warriors.

So just need to get a few points for the FWs, 3 railrifles will only get you half.

Also, I play Tau as one of my armies and have been playing 40k since early nineties so I'd count myself as an experienced player as well. :D

I will tell TauJohn today.
