Need some opinions..

Hi all,

I recently picked up a few of the new Space Wolves minis, as I thought they looked great with all the details and embellishments they come with. I'm slightly torn, though, as I like that slightly brighter armor color that you see a lot of, but I also like the darker more 'grim' color that seems to dominate the newer artwork.

I'm also a SoB and Black Templar player. I wanted a break from painting black :P

Anyhoo, I have started one, and I wanted to get some feedback:

I'm sure that painting a darker grey would take less time, but i'm really torn which route to go, darker or lighter armor. argh!

Cheers

nice work mate, very clean!

When i was putting an army of wolves together i had the same thoughts, i like the look of the lighter shades when weathered, but ive always liked the grim, dark look. When i simply couldn't decide i looked at the how wolves have been painted over the years and decided what time frame my army was based on. In the RTB01 era space wolves were dark gray, just plain gray, and quite dark. Then they went into their blue era and now its just a dark blue gray era, so i decided since i wanted my wolves to be from just after the Heresy id do them dark gray with no blue, and no MK8 chests, and presto it becomes a 'themed' army!

Of course, there's no real rule on how you must paint them and its totally up to you. I like what you've done, the lighter armor shade contrasts the dark bone areas really nicely!

hope it helps!

Your brushwork is very good indeed, and if it wasn't a difficult decision for you, I'd say go with this scheme.

Before I am to give my opinion, I'd highly appreciate to see the other scheme, presented in a similar paintjob if you don't mind. :)

A direct comparison will make it easier for the forum to give you the opinions that you long for.

Again, this is a very beautiful mini. Crisp colours, the highlights blend together very well and the yellow on the shoulderpad is very nice. Please, keep the minis coming. :HQ:

I've done both styles - 'baby blue' and grey - over time but have currently decided my Wolves will be grey and I'm building again mostly from scratch in this scheme and have a current WIP thread running with my Grey Hunters and Long Fangs in the grey scheme along with some shots of my older 'baby blue' units.

I say you've got a very clean, quality finish going on in the 'baby blue' look which I'd be more than happy to put on the table top but it sounds like you are considering the time to finish each figure here not just the finish. I had a similar issue with my own 'baby blue' scheme as it seemed to take a lot longer to finish each mini which was a factor when I made the switch to a grey scheme. I've got more chance of putting a completed army on the table top, I've never used unpainted figures - well not since childhood when using Airfix WWII box sets at least :ermm: - and don't intend to start now.

So I don't think you can make a wrong choice here as both schemes are Space Wolves and I'd be willing to say your grey scheme will be just as well done as this example, but I wouldn't say no to a look at your grey ideas either ;)

Good luck with whichever choice you make but be sure to keep us up to date with progress...

Thanks for the comments everyone, I really appreciate it. Once this chap is done, i'll try a darker one as well, then i'll put him up for you to check out. Hopefully I should get more, if not all of this chap done tonight, then i'll post some more pics.

OK, I did a little more to this chap last night. He is taking me FOREVER to do lol! I think it's because it's new territory for me:

As a side note, my band, Crusader, just wrapped up recording our first EP. We have a track on there called 'Asgards Fire'. What inspired me to write this song was the image on the front of the SW codex, and sometimes when we play this live, I change some of the lyrics (but only those 'in the know' would know it lol!). A lot of our stuff actually is inspired by GW things.

If you want to check it out for your amusement, it'll be up here for a short time:

Out of curiosity what recipe did you use for the grey? And I'd say go with this scheme, for some reason the blue-grey fits more with them, could just be they're from an ice world though

It was a mixture of SW Grey, Shadow Grey and Codex Grey for the base coat, with a wash of devlan mud in the recesses of the armor, then highlights were made by adding more SW Grey to the base mix.

Wow, it sounds simple. Why the heck did it take me 10 hours? :wallbash:

So, here he is. All I need to do is add the SW logo on the shoulder pad. I'm waiting to get hold of some of that 'decal adhesive' so I can apply it without the bloody thing creasing up >waves fist<. Other than that, DONE!
