Forgeworld Character Conversion set

After a break from painting I saw this set and thought it would be a good starter set.

So this evening Ive come up with this one. Its only tacked together and needs another pad.

Im going to build a 6 man squad of beakies but without the expense of buying the forgeworld kit

Im also painting them old school so they should all look like this when they are done.

Just as a side note what colour should the pad studs be? gold or white?

I cant say Im thrilled at the mould quality though. Check this out.

The bionics on one hand are none existant and the head has a halo or massive eyebrows. I expect some trimming but the detials got to be underneath somewhere. grrrrr...

I don't like Ultramarines, at all, but I really like this paint job. Reminds me of when I first got into the hobby back in the Rogue Trader era. I'd go with white studs on the shoulder pad. I think it would balance the white against the metallics well.

Man, i've had some problems with FW recently too. That bolter looks warped as heck!

Good WIP, i'll be watching with interest!

I've gotten pretty lucky in that with the exception of Lugft Huron all the stuff Ive gotten from FW recently has only needed minor cleaning up. I'd give Forge wold a ring about those though, The bolter could be used with some effort, but that arm is just inexcusable....

Back to your work though, I quite like that Ultramarine, and I think white studs would work best too. The one you've put together from your Conversion Kit looks pretty cool too. I picked up one of those power fists off of Ebay, and my favourite thing about it is that you can see the regular hand underneath the gauntlet ;)

good luck with your project

James

Thanks Guys

Ive just dropped FW an email so lets see how they respond. As Ive started using some of the items on the sprue Im not sure what the answer will be. Lets see how their customer service handle it.

The kits great and I agree about the powerfist its cool that you can see the small operators hand instide the fist. I'll start the paint process this weekend and update on Sunday

ForgeWorld rarely responds to emails. You need to call them. They are really good about replacing warped stuff though, and I don't believe they even require you to send the damaged goods back.

I took your advice and gave them a call.

Because I sent a photo there was no argument and they have said they will recast them and send them over as it looks like the mould has torn. Like you said they said keep what you have so it looks like I'll also have something to play with. I'll end up with my own iron hands squad at this rate (but blue :) )

Thanks Reyner. White it is then!

The blue is a thin coat of ultra blue.

Pick the lines out with a black 005 micron pen.

complete wash with asurman blue

wet blend various ratios of ultra blue/white where highlights are needed

Ive not finished the highlights on this one as hes part of a squad of about 15 marines and 6 converted SH teminators who all want their final highlights (I wanted them all to be done at once to be the same) Ive just been lazy and moved onto painting new projects.

I've had a couple of issues of miscasting with FW stuff and contacted them by email both times. First time they took a while to respond maybe a week or so but I got a reply the same day this time. They immediately sent out replacement parts with no need to return the faulty ones. I offered to photograph the last mis cast part which they have asked to see so they can sort out any problems with production.

Based on the amount of bits I've had and the number of miscast parts it's not that common for faulty parts to slip through but resin casting will always throw up the odd problem.

Heres a quick update of what Ive managed to do today.

Ive still got all the blue to highlight etc but it coming together nicely

The only thing I have an issue with is that the resin on the flat areas (legs) isnt smooth. Its making it look like Ive slapped thick paint onto it. I just cant bring myself to strip it.

The new forgeworld Corvus armour range got me thinking about my old "original" 30 in a box for £10 space marine box set that I queued outside GW from 12 midnight to get on the release date with my dad!

Heres a test model using the body, head and backpack from one of them. The only issue I can see is hes thinner above the belt than a standard marine. Ive enough bits for 5 of these so what do you think?

That bionic marine looks great. As for it not being smooth did you wash the resin? There's release agent on it sometimes which could make paint (or as I found undercoat) go a bit funky. You are making me want to paint Ultramarines all the more, first the film now these! You are using their "proper" blue so I salute you!

Glad to hear FW is fixing the problem, I bought a plague hulk back December last year and my 3 emails are still unreplied to about the absolute horrible condition of the pieces, I still haven't assembled it and the rest of the army is sitting here too it kinda crushed my motivation.

To be fair to FW they were spot on and replaced the item within a couple of weeks of calling them and sending them the pics.

They first said keep the parts then said send them back for their QC meeting.

Thanks for the comments MA. Ive just ordered a few more FW spotty pads so I can make another 5 of these fellas. Ive a couple of crafty conversions in mind so Im going to post them soon. I may wait until after christmas though because if B&C have a new paining vow (does anyone know) I might throw another 6 maines and a FW Rhino into the pot.

Heres the latest one.

Id appreciate any thoughts on the powersword. Ive got the hilt etc to do but what about the blade effect

The powersword is executed pretty well, but it sort of gets lost in all the blue on the model. A red blade would provide contrast and also bring out the purity seal.

Like Grey_Death did here:

http://thepaintingcorps.blogspot.com/2008/...er-weapons.html

Of course, that's probably the last thing you want to hear after spending your time painting the sword

Dont worry it was a simple blend up so I hadnt spent that much time on it.

Heres the new version

Let me know what you think

Just a quick update.

The squads about done now just, a few arms, backpacks and then the final highlights.

Im starting to grime them up now and and give them a bit of weathering.

Ive half a mind to continue and make a total of 10 including apocathy.

Heres the squad shot.
