Brother Caedrius
Hi UltraRich, lovely looking Ultramarines! Just a quick question for you.....did you find your FW powersword was cast exceptionally thin and quite bendy? UltraRich
Hi UltraRich, lovely looking Ultramarines! Just a quick question for you.....did you find your FW powersword was cast exceptionally thin and quite bendy? It was. So much in fact that to fix it to the hand there was nothing to pin to as there wasnt enough "sword" to drill. What I ended up doing was drilling the fist and then cutting the bottom off the sword handle and then super glued the handle into the hand. These are just models and not used for gaming but I wouldnt have used this sword if it was used for gaming. Brother Caedrius
Thanks for your reply, this is also the problem I am facing, it is so unbelievably thin and bendy and I am intending to use for gaming that I may actually forgo the blade and just use the hilt, with a plastic sword! A shame really, it's quite an elegant weapon! EPK
Nice looking models. I started a similar project myself, detailed here, subsituting mk 5 chests in place of mk6 (I didn't feel like dishing out the dough for the FW set either). I'm thinking of converting one of those mk 5's into a mk4 actually as I have a mk4 helmet on it's way. I like the use of those old school bodies though, wish I had some of those. The FW bionics are looking nice, but again I think I might try to just convert one myself - specifically for my meltagunner as I'm thinking he may be likely to have his arm completely melted away. UltraRich
Unfortunately this brother had not read the government health warning on the side of the plasma weapon. He now has to spend a fortune on metal cleaner but it still hasnt put him off. Ok, so which head. I had vowed to make this squad a full helmeted unit but i think the bare head adds to the impression of damage. Let me know what you think http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f372/rbrewster101/Untitled-1copy-7.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/213692-forgeworld-character-conversion-set/page/2/#findComment-2592603 Share on other sites
Dwarfkernow
Great looking Ultramarines, how did you do the conversion on the Plasma Gunners left arm? I really like the way that you have painted the Beakie helmets with the white stripe, really reminds me of looking through White Dwarf in the 80's which was good times. Looking forward to seeing more and do you mind if I borrow your ideas for my first company. Merry Christmas The Dwarfkernow Thanks everyone I think Ive got around the issue of a helmetless beakie by fixing one onto his belt. At least it'll be consistent. This also means I may as well push the squad to 10. Dwarffernow, it was a real chop job. First cut the arm at the elbow and wrist. Then drill out the hand and remove the fingers below the knuckle where it bends 90 degrees. I then pinned the arm to the gun, stuck the top of the hand over the gun and then stuck the fingers below the knuckle at the right angle. I then had to GS a thumb and the arm where it goes in the pad. This will be completed once I get a new knobbly pad. Heres the wip with a wip head http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f372/rbrewster101/Picture018-1.jpg http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f372/rbrewster101/Picture016.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/213692-forgeworld-character-conversion-set/page/2/#findComment-2593537 Share on other sites
UltraRich
Heres the latest update This ones about done. I ended up giving him a couple of GS purity seals as I messed up the pad removing the trim. I think it turned out better for having them though http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f372/rbrewster101/Picture025.jpg Heres a look at the next marine Im up to 8 in the squad of 10 so I want to make the last couple have character Let me know what you think to the pose. I wasnt sure about the soft joint on the front of the knee http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f372/rbrewster101/Picture029.jpg http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f372/rbrewster101/Picture031.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/213692-forgeworld-character-conversion-set/page/2/#findComment-2597500 Share on other sites
tyrannosaurus
Like the pose from the front [looks like he's parrying something?] but from the side looks a little unbalanced maybe, and if he is parrying would expect the sword to be higher. Or it could be that he's chopping the head off a guardsman, depends what you have in mind. Any chance you could paint a red and yellow stripe either side of the white on the beaky and turn them into rainbow warriors? It would make me very happy. I know that's a lot to ask... In a word "no" :) Im not feeling the love for Ultras even though im putting a load of work into these so I may do a small squad of Sons of Orah next just to have a go at red. onipunk
Please do at least one in the Field Police scheme :P And yes, everyone loves the Sons of Orar, which is actually my next project, an entire Mk 6 Sons of Orar army ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/213692-forgeworld-character-conversion-set/page/2/#findComment-2597594 Share on other sites

Its a real rough job but what do you think? This was undercoated and base highlighted with my new airbrush http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f372/rbrewster101/Picture004-10.jpg The light washed out the chest eagle on this one. Im not sure if I over shaded it in blue http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f372/rbrewster101/Picture001-11.jpg I dont want to get too distracted so Im back to blue next (although I may do a rhino in this scheme) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/213692-forgeworld-character-conversion-set/page/2/#findComment-2601631 Share on other sites
Mostwanted
I really like the pose you have done on the Marine with the bolter and Chainsword. The soft armour joint is done really well. UltraRich
The red looks absolutely fantastic, may I ask how you did it? No worries This was my first play with my new airbrush. I undercoated in black Sprayed on a base coat of foundation mecherite (SP) red Then gave it a light spray of a mix of 50/50 foundation mecherite red and blood red. I then washed it all in badab black I then gave it a spray from above using blood red so I acheived a highlight I then did the same again using a mix of blazing orange and blood red (50/50) I then used a brush badab black into the darkest areas and then used orange to pick out the main highlights. I then hit it with a dilute red wash to tie it all together. Im probably going to do a squad like this once this squads done but Ive got the following to do first Razorback with full Forgeworld armour Predator reclaimed off ebay Land raider reclaimed off ebay Scratch built drop pod. Mr Melty who lost both arms in a recent accident but still doesnt know when to quit. This was my first go at dusting the bottom of the legs with the airbrush. http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f372/rbrewster101/Untitled-1copy-8.jpg Heres another go on one my converted marines http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f372/rbrewster101/Picture011.jpg This one came out ok. Ive also tried a new method out on the chest eagle. Its a blend of real and NMM techniques and I think it came out ok. http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f372/rbrewster101/Picture014.jpg I think everyone will be happy to hear Ive now got all of the marines for the squad (10) done and Im now working through the final touch ups. UltraRich
Ive signed up for the painting vow so Im trying to burn through the last 3 of these. Ive managed to get the 2 of the last 3 finished so Im almost there. There all still need the bases finishing but I'll do them in one hit. Heres the mix of old, new and FW parts. I like how these are turning out. The lenses are much bigger on the heads giving more scope for highlighting http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f372/rbrewster101/Untitled-2copy-3.jpg Heres the other charging marine http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f372/rbrewster101/Untitled-1copy-10.jpg The last ones on its way then I can close this and start again!
