Does anyone else have problems with decals?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Last night I was >attempting< to apply a SW decal to the marines shoulder pad. Now, I've used decals on vehicles no problem, but for some reason when is comes to this, I just can't nail it. It will get a crease in it (due to me trying to apply a flat decal to a rounded area) which will not smooth out either. I could do the insignia by hand, but I was trying to avoid it if possible with these guys.

Has anyone else had the same problem? how did you rectify it? I used to have the same problem with CSM ones too, in the end I gave up and drew them on with an art pen, then painted over that.

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Hello!

I had the same problem until I used Micro-sol and Mirco-set. It took me almost a year of being a doubter of these products until I actually tried them. There's a link to one of the members sites or blogs on how to use them.

They work very well!

As Captain Sox has stated, it seems Micro-sol and Micro-set is the way to go. I haven't tried either as I haven't applied that many decals (I have a DIY Chapter so haven't had the need so much)

I've posted the results of the searches, because as you're from the US, I'm not sure of the availability in stores of the above. I'm sure one of the links in each search will point you in the right direction though ^_^

They do make it a lot easier to apply decals to compound curved surfaces. First apply some Micro Set to the area with a paintbrush, then apply the decal and remove excess water with a piece of cloth, tissue, etc. Finally, apply Micro Sol over the whole decal and let it dry. If the area is very curved or has other detail, like ridges, studs, etc. on it, you may want to press firmly down on the decal with your cloth or tissue after applying Micro Sol, but if you do, be careful that you don't move it! You may also have to apply some more Micro Sol if the decal doesn't sit right yet.

They're made by an American company :)

I meant that because I was using Google UK it would refer to availability in the UK than the US. :D

Decalfix saved my life - it really does make decals sit properly on models. ANother tip - cut thin lines into teh transfer to allow it to have slightly differential bending around a curved pad...

And I head up to Cov every now and then , my wife is from Stoke, near the old Peugeot plant (Humber Road).
